No because I am immortal. So neither applies. I am your fate, no need to retaliate. Your ass is going to reoffend, straight back to the state penn.

Those states all exist in this world already. Some go through them during their lives. Some spend a longer period in them, some shorter. I don't need to think that I'll spend an eternity in either one of them, thanks.

Christian agnostic, and I don't believe there is a hell. I can't rule out there is an afterlife of sorts; I just don't believe in Hell as such.

Yes, but hell is a mental realm not a pit of fire.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised. Another thing I want to know is what those four people meant when they put down "other."

It's called "Hindu," not "Hinduist."

I don't believe in Hell, but I do believe in reincarnation and eventual unity of the personal spirit (atman) with the universal spirit (Brahman). I suppose that could be thought of as an afterlife, but I don't believe in an afterlife in the conventional sense.

Of course, and you'll go to it if you don't accept Jesus.

I very much hope that that was an attempt at humor.

—Alorael, who is Jewish and who, more or less according to the tenets of his religion, does not believe in Hell. The afterlife can be left to God and everyone will find out what it's like eventually.

I do believe some people go through hell on earth, e.g. when they see that they are alone, becoming weaker and weaker and see a lonely death coming.
people on death row come to mind and people who try to kill themselves and succeed only halfway.

Fortunately, we tend to be somewhat blind to the severity of our suffering while we suffer and we become aware of it only when we are getting better.
Hell is connected to death, because we face what our life could have been and our accumulated karma haunts us, unless we die a sudden unanticipated death but in any case it haunts our family and friends.

As we approach death, we may delegate all our tasks, our attitudes and feelings to the survivors and the extent to which this transfer succeeds determines our "afterlife", imho. So the afterlife I believe in is a collective one while hell is experienced individually.

Accommodating to the dictionary, the meaning of "hell" isn't always necessarily supernatural.

quote:
hell

n 1: any place of pain and turmoil; "the hell of battle"; "the inferno of the engine room"; "when you're alone Christmas is the pits"; [syn: hell on earth, hellhole, snake pit, the pits, inferno]

Urgh... that mindset is annoying. As an atheist, I have no problem with others' religions, but this sort of "you're going to fry if you don't convert" thing makes me sick. Anyway, pardon my rant.

I think Hell is what you make of it. If you don't believe in it (and I don't), then it won't exist for you.

On the other hand, if you do believe in it, karma dictates that you'll wind up in some form of it eventually (probably hell on earth).
