Law too dangerous for Rey? Are you forgetting Rey's speed?

IC:
Perhaps later. I need to think about what to post.

Turning to Garath, Alex began his first attempt to explain magic.

"You see, Garath, it's like this. Magic is the manipulation of energies. Wave your hand around," Alex demonstrates, "like this." Garath waves his hand around. "You can feel your hand moving the air around. Magic is like that only we are moving energies, not air. Do you understand?"

"I think you are just trying to trick me. I don't like being tricked." Garath walks a little faster to put some distance between them. Alex begins thinking of another way to explain things.

OOC: I am rather upset right now at was has just happened. I took two hours of my time to create a post to get the RP moving again, solve the problem with Alec, and introduce new ideas that would be beneficial to everyone. However, it seems that my post has been completely overlooked by everyone just because Alec and Your Unborn Child posted only minutes after me.

I am now making everyone aware of my post because it offends me that it has been overlooked in such a way. I didn't do all that writing and work for nothing. I did it for the benefit of all the RPers.

OOC: Who is with me?

IC:

Garath shook off Alex's attempts with a simple wave.

"My disbelief is simple. I have not seen magic working, or seen an example that could not be explained by other means. Energy, whatever, if I cannot observe its effects, it does not exist. Air is different."

He blew at a falling leaf.

"It does stuff. Magic doesn't. Just face the truth, friend."

They were already some distance away. Garath had to admit they had been pretty lucky with the traps so far. Someone muttered this was because the traps had a magical component, but he believed it was simply an effect of the previous night's rain. Staring backwards, he could just see a thin column of smoke, and some flashes of what could be fire.

"I didn't know we brought explosives..." He mumbled.

"They must be under attack!" Glen almost shouted. "We should go back to help them!"

"No," Garath said. "If it is an attack, that's what they want. They only have limited forces - that's why they haven't directly attacked, and if we are bunched up together, we can fight no better, only be an easier target for explosives. We need to forge ahead as fast as we can. They can follow up later, if they survive."

OOC: Ok, ok, no priest. Optical illusion?

OOC: Obiously, about a day's wait to post has now four pages ahead... and I'm rather confuddled as to where my character should be. Maybe I should be with FZ? I'll just wait a little more until I figure out where everyone is.

Glen glanced nervously at the smoke and signs of fire.

"If its demons again then we are in big trouble,"
he turned to his nearby companion(s?). "I was sure more people would have followed your lead Garath."

"The less people, the harder it will be to track our trail and catch us offguard. Don't panic Glen, we are no better off than if we were with the group. The danger remains the same, if not less so."

Glen was not entirely convinced. His simplistic mind told him larger numbers meant better odds of living, but, there was something strange about this man. His presence seemed to douse the peculiar feeling that shrouded the valley, though in a way that was not at all comforting. Glen noticed that there had been no serious trouble since they left the group, nor sign of traps.

"Weird," he thought, "I was sure this area would be covered in protective wards and traps."

Maybe what they said about this man was true. Maybe his presence did null magic, or perhaps they were just lucky. Still he kept a sharp eye out, for anything that looked a bit too suspicious, just to make sure.

Even with the absence of immediate danger, Glen moved silently and tried to keep the trail covered as best he could, for who knew what rogue demon or beast lurked near by, waiting to pounce.

OOC: I actually thought more people were going to follow, but since not, I guess we will meet up later. Since I wanted this character to be void of commanding skills and to not be very bright, I chose to ignore the internal conflict. I hope this works out.

OOC: I suggest that we start using edited maps for everyone's current location. I will work on that tomorrow. Let's give the other people in the RP a chance to breathe and catch up. This RP is moving way too fast for its own good.

And Alec, for Pete?s sake, cut down on the bomb junk. Gunpowder would have existed at this time, but complex bombs like you describe would not have. In fact, gunpowder in this world would be used primarily for spells only. Keep the traps limited to wards and mechanical traps like bear traps. Please refrain from creating complex things that no one else but you would comprehend.

IC: Oskoth tried to hurry along with the group, but began to lag behind as he wrote down all the traps marked on the ground by Chadussid. Soon he found himself alone with another man plotting the traps carefully on his map. It wasn't long before they heard several explosions just ahead of them.

Oskoth: "Great, someone set off some more wards again. We had better finish plotting these on the map. How many is this now?"

Man: "So far...seven."

Oskoth: "Is that all?"

Man: "Would you rather have more?"

Oskoth: "In a way, yes. Raymond said there were at least 35 of them set up along this road and maybe some side roads. So far, two of them have been set off behind us, and two in front of us, which makes four of them destroyed. We have seven marked so far that are intact. That leaves twenty-five more for us to find and plot. I can only hope the rest are located along this road... Say, I never asked you your name. I am Oskoth."

Daniel: "My name is Daniel."

Oskoth: "Well, Daniel, we better catch up with the others."

Daniel: "Wait, I have a better idea. How about we avoid Chadussid and take this side road here?"

Oskoth: "Are you sure that is wise? Chadussid won't be happy about that."

Daniel: "Oh the devil with him. They can look after themselves. They don't even need our help really. We can find our way towards these ruins here on the map faster if we take this side road. We can meet them all there once they arrive."

Oskoth: "I suppose that since they are the closest ruins to our present location that we can reach before dark, then they are the most likely place that Chadussid and the others will head for. Ok, I can go with that idea. Let's get going and... Oh, we better keep our eyes open for traps."

Daniel: "Right. Maybe we can take more off this list."

Oskoth: "Touché."

They start off down the side road as the sun sets lower against the horizon. There is one hour left for them to get to the ruins before dark.

OOC: Just to let you know, they are headed for the ruins that have the bunker that that Raymond, Eferas, and Rey are headed for currently. They may meet along the way.

Thanks for completely ignoring the description, MSW. 'Concussion potion' sure implies 'gunpowder' all over the place, doesn't it?

Yes, FZ, Sylvain is rather far away from you. And you wouldn't be able to enter the thicket anyway, because of the ward, unless Garath can see/walk through it.

I'll come into contact with everyone else in due time.

MSW, military ingenuity, particularly of the kind the Corpsmen seem to specialise in, is always going to involve complicated and nasty machinery. And time period has no effect on this. For example, the grenade was used in a primitive form in the 15th century. But I'm not entirely sure why it's so hard to understand. The gist is this - you trigger it, it hurts. Surely that's not too complicated?

Alas, I also don't see how your plan to solve the argument has been massively derailed. Some semblance of order is being reassembled and to restore it any further than is now happening would be bad RPing.

FZ, I think only you and Slith are together at present. The rest are probably on the same path, but by nightfall they'll have stopped and Garath hasn't learnt this as yet. This means either they'll have to link up in the morning or someone will have to brave the paths ahead to try to inform Garath.

Zephyr, Rey is wounded and his speed is his only real advantage. Law has managed to survive several weeks out here. That suggests that at first glance Law would be the stronger. That doesn't mean Rey couldn't escape, but his chances of taking Law down in a fair fight are minimal. Although obviously it doesn't matter, because neither of you are actually double agents.

Jay didn't like what he saw as he meandered down the road after the funny looking mage. Broken shells littered the side of the road, several dozen now by his count. The group was getting much to spread out, people wandering off on their own or in pairs. Thankfully, the main group was still together, though he wasn't sure if that was from a sense of solidarity or if they were as agitated as he was and sticking together out of a need for security. He hoped it was a bit of both.
As time wore on, he saw ahead several pillars, several of which had fallen over. He approached them with care, remembering what the other man had said.

"Lookin' for an X..." he sang softly under his breath.

"Lookin' for a big ol' X..."

"If its an X you want, there are probably a few over there by the river."

Jay nearly jumped out of his skin when the curiously garbed mage came up behind him and tapped him on the shoulder. The man was disconcerting from a distance, up close he was downright creepy.

"Damn, don't do that. I nearly had a heart attack" Jay told the man.

The mage looked him up and down, his gaze making Jay decidedly uncomfortable.

"No, that probably won't happen for a few years, more if you lay off all the drinking."

Jay's face registered shock for a few seconds before putting on a smile.

"Thats funny, you almost had me going there." Jay gave the man a chuckle for his attempt at black humor.

The strange mage didn't smile back. He flicked his fingers over towards the river.

"Just go look for two pillars in an X shape."

Jay backed off a bit, now slightly annoyed with the man. 'Why don't you go search yourself, you old coger' he thought.

"What !" He heard the mage exclaim behind him. Jay winced and turned slowly, not knowing how the mage heard his thoughts but preparing to dodge whatever the man threw at him. The mage wasn't looking at him though, he was simply talking to the air, gesticulating wildly, like he was trying to give emphasis to whatever he said. Jay let out a breath, now more than happy to leave the man to his conversations with himself.

'Let crazy dogs lie' Jay chuckled to himself.

OOC: Sorry, Alec, I messed that last post up. I never intended to say that the bomb actually used gunpowder. I was using the gunpowder as an example of what technology would be available in this world. I welcome bombs of a sort. Magic oriented ones, like wards and triggered magic traps like the huge explosion on the road are okay. Shrapnel bombs, like Alec specified are welcome as well. However, all of them should be used in moderation. It's not really necessary to have them around every turn.

I think it would be interesting if we add some more, primitive traps to the RP as well. Traps like bear traps, hidden pits, dart traps, spear traps, quicksand, and so forth.

IC: Fifteen minutes and a mile down the road, Daniel happens to notice something about the road that escapes Oskoth's attention.

Daniel: "STOP!!! The road ahead does not look right."

Oskoth: (Looking closer) "Thank god for your good eyes. I would have walked right into that one."

Oskoth gets down on his hands and knees and examines the ground closely. He then walks to the woods and gets a large stone. He steps back a few feet and tosses it at the uneven ground. The ground caves in a few feet around the stone in every direction and it reveals a large pit. It startles the both of them and causes them to jump back.

Daniel: "Sheesh, someone really wants to get rid of us!!"

Oskoth: (Looking in the pit) "I somehow doubt it was meant for us. With all those spikes down there at the bottom of the pit, it would work just as well on demons. I think we had better keep an eye out for traps like this now as well. Better mark it down."

They take the time to mark it on the map and then they continue on. Then, all of the sudden they begin hearing some people talking faintly in the distance about a bunker and crossed pillars. But look as they may, they can't see its origin.

Oskoth: "Do see where that is coming from?"

Daniel: "No, not at all. Maybe it?s being carried on the wind. There is a good breeze blowing."

Oskoth: "The wind, eh? Hmmm. Well, it sounds to me like its originating from the east of us, close to the river. The wind is blowing at us from that direction. Perhaps the group is no longer all together and has been split up somehow. Or maybe some of them went through the jungle to get to the ruins faster..."

Daniel: "Well at any rate, at least we know some of them are nearby and headed to the same ruins. Let's try to meet them there."

They hurry along the road as fast as they can.

Finally, they were moving again. Following Raymond instructions, they soon met with Garath and those who followed him which were quickly reincorporated. Some complained, mainly the mages, but it didn't last long and soon the newcomers were informed of their new destination.

The corp agent was scrutinizing the ground ahead, the group forming a row behind him. Akhtar was thoughful, the first day in the valley was nearly ended and they had already been attacked a few times.

And now, they wanted to vote? The leader had to get choosen for his capacity to deal with the situation.

How many other adventurers were thinking this way he didn't know but he firmly believed of the righteousness of his belief. And he had to do something about it.

He started walking slowlier to be at the mages level, now that the mage named Eferas was gone he would have to talk to someone else. His takouba was pointed upward since the attack and he had to take care not to hurt anyone. When he saw the small mage he approached him and started speaking :

Akhtar : "We are starting to fail the mission, we couldn't save the priest, and according to Raymond, there is no one else to rescue. The day is ending and we haven't decided what to investigate first. A leader is needed and I believe the elder mage was right, whether mages lead or not won't protect them. Your robe for example clearly shows what you are and there is this kind of things for every mage. You are the ones who know best how to dispose of the demons. You will have to bring Chadussid with you to take care of the officer but he already stated he would obey the leaders. "

Akhtar was moving more and more slowly soon he was in the back and started watching the group's back.

OOC: I would like to introduce a character, if you all don't mind. Here are the details:

Name: Coco the Monkey

Description: Coco is a small monkey, five years of age, a wanderer, a dancer. A rather unremarkable simian, formerly in the employ of an organ grinder in the King's Bazaar, Coco escaped his master and fled into the city. No one is quite certain where he found the magic fez he wears, but it certainly must account at least in part for his strange and wide travels over the past two years.

Details on the fez: Its magic makes him somewhat more intelligent than a regular monkey. Also, when he takes it off and reaches into it, it usually will produce anything that he wants, which is usually bananas. Note that when he takes the fez off, his intelligence is reduced to that of a mere monkey, so asking him to pull anything in particular out could meet with varying results, or more likely, a banana. Also, the only items that can come out of the fez are ones that can fit through the hole.

General disposition: Coco likes bright colors. He likes climbing. He loves his fez, and won't let anyone touch it. He likes riding around on other people - he's not very heavy. He can take orders, if the fez is on.

IC: Coco the monkey slowly wakes from the nap he started in the back of a wagon filled with all those yummy provisions, peeks out of the canvas covering the back of the wagon, and realizes quicky that he is now nowhere close to where he was when he dozed off.

Nonplused, he clambors out and down to the ground and takes in all the ruckus and unfamiliar faces around. Deciding that he should make certain that he is welcome in this crowd (and so ensure continued access to tasty provisions), he gives himself a good scratch, and then ambles over to the man whose colorful garb clearly indicates leadership.

Emitting a few solemn monkey chirps and taking a deep bow before him (as he was trained to do by his former organ-grinding master), Coco then extends his hand up toward Hispar in a gesture of friendship.

OOC: Is this okay? Potential comic relief, with the ability to reach places others may not, if asked clearly and correctly... and provide bananas.

OOC: teehee, evil monkeys.

IC:
"Raymond," Eferas inquired after they stopped at the riverside, "What do you need us for? Or better yet, why can't the whole group come with you?"

"Because we laid old traps around the bunker, and I need you two to help me disarm them. Oh yes - don't move until I say it's safe. Rey, use your shield to protect Eferas."

Raymond then walked to a nearby dead tree, carefully made five strides, and shot a spear into a seemingly innocent spot in the river. The entire dead tree, as well as the surrounding earth, sank into the ground. With that, several pillars rose out of the water.

"Quickly," Raymond motioned. "These pillars stay up just long enough for three people to cross."

OOC: Ah! I go away for a few days and look what happens - four full pages to read. Oh well, better late than never.

My character is with the main group, just for reference.

IC: For that lot back home to see me now... I told them that one day I would be an adventurer, and look at me now!

Terril sheathed his sword. There wasn't much use for it at the moment. As quick and smart as he was, he didn't even get a glance at their attacker.

Fortunately no-one seemed to have anything worse than some scrapes. And if they could hold together and get to some shelter before nightfall, they might just stay that way.

One day I'll go back there. One day. And when I do, I'll be rich and famous. And they'll be just as stupid. But I'll've shown them.

The river flowed by slowly, unconcerned by the humans that had taken up searching its shores. Small fish darted to the surface, snapping at insects as a slight breeze blew across the valley. Jay losened the straps on his armor, the entire contraption unconfortably hot.

"Isn't it supposed to get cooler in the evening ?" He asked of one of the searchers. The main group was all gathered by the river now, trying to figure out how the other three got across, and why they did not wait for the rest of the group.

"It'll git 'em kilt" one of the mule drivers had muttered, "Goin' off like that. No tellin what sorta crazy demon filth is wanderin 'round the other side of the river there."

Jay wasn't so sure. He thought he had spotted the place where they crossed, the ground fallen away into the river, along with a tree. It was freshly disturbed, but when he looked for an X, there were no pillars surrounding the site, only more of those damned egg shells. Except... He bent down closer, and picked up another fragment. These were white and green, trying to blend in with the grass on the riverbank. He took a sniff, and was pleasantly surprised that these too gave off the scent of cinnamon. He placed the peice in with the other in his pouch and went back to searching the bank. He didn't know for certain if they had crossed here, but he thought it was funny that, if they had used the same way to get across as the villiagers, the villiagers would make a bridge that only stayed up for a short amount of time. What if the entire villiage was trying to cross? They might trample each other. Jay just shook his head.

'No sense thinking of depressing things like that, there aren't even any pillars around here.'

With that thought in mind, he once again began walking along the riverbank, careful to keep in sight of the rest of the search party, and keeping an eye out for those damned pillars.

IC:

Eferas, for his age of seventy, was pretty fast on his feet. Running behind Rey, he and Law managed to cross the bridge just in time before the pillars sank into the waves again, the surface of the water looking for all the world as if it was not concealing anything.

Eferas was about to go on, when Law grabbed the back of his collar and yanked him backwards.

"Didn't you hear what I just said? You'll be walking straight into the next trap if you aren't careful! Look over there."

And a wisp it is they have chosen as their beacon." Reinhard Mey (freely translated)

Garath had positioned himself towards the middle of the group, and smiled as the group took on the onerous task of searching for a crossing point.

People had disappeared since he left, and he quietly mocked Chadussid when his back was turned. Such incompetence. No wonder the corp had lost so many wars.

"Maybe we should set up a signal fire, to guide the others here. Especially as the enemy knows we are already here."

No one seemed to listen, so he walked on down to the shore, where he kicked stones into the water.

Nearby, a man - Jay was his name, he seemed to remember - was examining very intently some small fragments.

"Demon eggs?" Garath snickered.

Jay frowned at him, and Garath looked away, taking aim at another rock with his heavy leather boot, and then watched as it flew into the river, where it sank without trace.

"Heard you ate the monkey."

Jay shrugged.

"You do realise that I should be leading."

Jay turned on him suddenly, examining him carefully.

"So you are the same as the rest of those fools."

Garath smiled and shook his head. "No, it's just that I know certain things. I know what is required, what is an acceptable risk. I can judge things, see things, and most people cannot."

Jay did not respond.

"Just that, when things happen, you'll understand. Maybe you'll help me, then."

But Jay did not answer. Instead, he waved frantically to get his attention, and pointed into the water.

"Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?"

"That spot, when you kicked a rock onto it, it made a sound!"

"So?"

"The sound was metallic!"

Garath realised the truth. "The rain yesterday, if must have made the water level rise. The cross is underwater..."

Carefully, Jay threw a second rock onto the same location. The sound this time was the grinding of gears and the rattling of chains, as machinery took action.
