I know what you're saying Thuryl, it's just that I tend to trust people as far as I can throw them. I'm certain that people will continue to ignore commonsense, even with the forums' moratorium on using the JPEG format.

Requests for future games in Avernum 4

The first Spiderweb Software game I played was Exile 2: Crystal Souls. It was a demo off a shareware CD that had a copy of Cyberdogs on it. (I loved Cyberdogs, but lost my copy, and didn't have the 'net back then. I just realised that I'm reminiscing like some kind of senile old coot.)

Although Exile 2 was what got me hooked on Spiderweb Software games, it is far from my favourite. I'm a stickler for consistency, and for some reason the Exile series just seemed to have too many inconsistencies for my tastes. There are still a number of them in the Avernum Trilogy, but (thankfully) a smaller amount of them.

I have absolutely hated games like Quake 3 because of both poor execution and the complete lack of plot in single player. I've loved games like ZZT, which uses ASCII to represent everything. So when it comes to graphics, I really couldn't give a stuff - as long as they are consistant.

The most important thing to me is plot and character development. Although Jeff is really beginning to wear my patience thin in the originality stakes, the character development is amongst the best I've seen.

As long as Jeff manages to keep at least to the same standard as with Exile 2, he'll keep my patronage. But for the record, my favourite Spiderweb game is Avernum 2; (hardly) suprising, 'eh?

And: E3/BoA? Force of habit, Alorael?

I seem to be borderline INTP/INTJ. Every year or so when I decide to take the test again, I end up getting a different result.

There are two pixels next to each other between the rungs of the ladder, and a single pixel somewhere near the top.

Damn you Vogel, can you get anything right? G768.bmp - the ladder graphic has 3 off-white pixels.

[Asbestos suit]
Really, I thought that this sort of incompetence was the realm of the lesser artists within the community's custom graphics department.

And with that, I've probably alienated at least some the community's custom graphics department. For those who persist in using JPEG's, I have two words: LOSSLESS JPEG. I am ever so tired of having to white out pixels.

Consider this extract from the Blades of Avernum Editor Appendices:
quote:
void set_state(short new_state) - Changes the state of the script to new_state and immediately stops running the script. Has no effect in a dialogue script or in the states INIT_STATE, DEAD_STATE, or other predefined state types (except START_STATE).

void set_state_continue(short new_state) - Exactly like set_state, except that it doesn’t stop running the script.
Now that seems all well and good, but the script that I have been working with over the last two days says otherwise.

The following code worked with my script. Am I missing something here, or is this delightful occurance another one of the esteemed Mr. Vogel's "undocumented features"?
beginstate SEARCH_STATE;
set_state_continue(3);
break;
If this is not a bug, then I am begining to believe the documentation has more information incorrect than it has right.
If this is a bug, I would prefer that it not get fixed: this functionality can save me plenty of trouble.

Thanks, TM.

Alright, it seems that my code was working and BoA is just being cruel to me. Why do all the stats display as lower, including the Dread Curse stat? Is that normal, or is it a bug of some sort?

Could someone please point me to a working example of a script giving character(s) a dread curse?

Damn. The thought of compiling anything sends chills down my spine - I may be able to learn a scripting language in less than 24 hours, but that doesn't mean I have the prerequisite knowledge for dealing with 'real' programming languages.

If I offered a token gesture of appreciation, would someone compile a soundless editor for the x86 platform?

I read some much earlier threads where people were talking about editing the resources in the *.exe file on the Windows version so that they could implement music.

I have an inquiry into something similiar: is it possible to replace the *.wav in the *.exe using the same method, without breaking anything?

I placed a 0.08 second soundless *.wav over the offending resources, and while the editor seems to work, I can't be sure that it won't corrupt my work.

No. This is likely a slightly misleading piece of dialogue left over from Exile 2. I said "slightly misleading", because in the Avernum universe he can do that. It is just that he won't do that for you in the Avernum 2 game.

(Perhaps the Efreeti flaming weaponry manufacturing process has a long ritual before the finished product. Or maybe Jeff didn't code that feature into Avernum 2.)

You can get access to his shop if you can cough up the dough, but it ain't cheap. He sells a variety of Blessed weapons, a couple of miscellaneous weapons I cannot remember, and a flaming sword.

It is entirely possible to finish it without the "correct" item. Personally, I prefer it that way - more of those "We are so obviously a Sci-Fi influenced bunch of grey skinned wierdos" to kill.

It is even entirely possible to finish it without Erika's amulet too. That way, Avernum is in a better position (the more of 'em you kill now, the less you have to later...), especially if you kill two or three of their Crystal Souls to lower the number of powerful spellcasters the Vahnatai have.
