Alex's thread reminded me that we haven't had one of these in quite a while - as near as I can determine, not since the last prune, because I can't find one on the board now.

Anyway, you know the deal. Take this test and post your result.

And if you can avoid complaining about how the test isn't accurate, avoid it. I didn't make it. Indeed, there are a lot of other tests, some of which are better. If you know of one, link it. :)

I appear to be slipping; as little as a year ago I had under -9 on both of these. If this continues, perhaps one day I'm going to vote conservative. I feel sick.

I've moved left economically. Spiderweb is still an influence, and I leave it to you to call it good or bad.

For these forums, objectivist and authoritarian. For the real world, it's somewhat inaccurate - I wouldn't put myself below zero, and not that far left.

I don't think I've ever seen a score past +1.00, by the way...

There's a much simpler quiz at http://www.self-gov.org/quiz.html. It takes a lot less time, and gives a score very similar to the Political Compass'. The questions here are also easier to understand — some of them over at the Compass were badly phrased, or I couldn't figure out what they were asking — and allows for a "Maybe" choice in addition to the "Agree" or "Disagree" options. In any questionaire there are always gray areas which I'm not comfortable answering without the "Maybe" option.

I got about the same results at both places.

The self-gov polls is perhaps one of the worst I have found on the web. At least the creators of the poll make no attempts to hide their interests. A couple issues I have with it are:

1) Answering all 'yes' yields a libertarian worldview. People are, overall, more likely to agree than disagree with a question. It's part of human nature.
2) The questions use loaded words like "censor", "corporate welfare", "barriers", etc. A good poll should try to make the questions phrased as neutrally as possible. What is worse is that the wording pushes toward the bias of the creators of the poll.

I agree, the original quiz should be improved, but at least they try to word questions in an objective way and are fairly evenhanded in the yes-no responses.

Actually, I found the questions at Political Compass very slanted. There were several questions that no matter how you answered it, you ended up giving an answer you didn't want to give.

EDIT: The Compass also had terminology that made clear the views of the people who created it. They hit my nerves, so I guess the makers' views of the other quiz hit your nerves because they were the opposite of the Compass.

I also find it difficult to accept that somebody might end up being "accidentally" libertarian because they're disinclined to actually read the question and answer it honestly and instead just go down the row clicking "Agree," "Agree," "Agree."

Good grief! Look at us! I've heard people bickering about politics, but never about political quizes...

I agree the questions at Political Compass are not perfect, I never said they were. However, there is more balance in those questions as they at least attempt to alternate between making one "side" sound positive and then doing the fair thing with the other. It is true that some questions are poorly worded, but they do keep some balance to all sides.

The libertarian one makes NO attempt to do this whatsoever and clearly uses one sided language for ALL of the questions.

As far as everyone answering agree, that's not the point. It's a game of numbers, and anyone with any political education knows this. They aren't stupid over there and probably well versed in the intricacies of setting up such polls. I know for a fact this unsavory practice is indeed taught in many poli sci programs.

The point being, that these subtle things like "yes" answers add up. Especially when your sample of questions is so low, having an extra one or two a certain way makes a big difference in the final result.

Also, I contend it is not possible to answer all the questions honestly when such loaded words are used. For example, the word "corporate welfare" or "government handouts" carries such a stigma with it that most people will oppose it. If I phrase it "federal financial assistance programs for businesses", we have essentially asked the exact same question, but I am willing to bet more people would support it. The fact is "financial assistance programs" ARE "corporate welfare" and "government handouts".

I consider myself to be fairly centrist.

Edit: Yup. Economic Left/Right: 1.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.41

Of course, that makes me a rabid right winger here.
