Actually, my copy of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (laughably misnamed, as it takes up two hefty volumes) lists A's as an acceptable plural for A. It's not one of those new revisionist versions either (although I have one of those as well); it's at least a couple of decades old.

You're in Geelong, lemmy? Huh. I used to live there.

(Also, the number of Australians in this topic is downright ridiculous.)

A bunch of questions in Blades of Avernum

1) If you don't start with the ability to cast a spell, you won't get it by building up the appropriate skill later; you have to learn it somewhere.

2) Nothing, as far as I know.

3) VoDT is a little short on spells in general. You can get some priest spells from one of the priests in Marralis, though.

4) Only intelligence, magery and the appropriate spell skill count; experience level doesn't directly alter the effectiveness of your spells.

The assassin's dagger is 5-25+1-5/lvl. The fine waveblade is 5-30+1-6/lvl. Not a huge advantage, certainly, but at medium/high levels it adds up to maybe an extra 10 points of damage per hit on average. I'm not certain the dagger increases assassination chance enough to compensate for this, and all other things being equal, consistent damage is better than inconsistent damage anyway. (Unless Anatomy and/or Assassination significantly affects damage even when you don't assassinate.)

As for dagger vs flaming sword (which is actually the important consideration for me, since I have two melee fighters), hmm. 3-18+8F+1-6/L vs 5-25+1-5/L plus some stat bonuses. Fairly similar to the above situation, although that fire damage is less reliable.

I'm not sure if the advantage of the dagger is quantifiable, and it's going to vary with the stats of both the wielder and the target, but as you say, intuition says that that many points of combat skills has to be worth something.

You mean the Assassin's Dagger? The stat bonuses look very nice, but base damage isn't quite in the same league. I keep it around, but use it intermittently.

I stole the waveblade, and while I'm pretty sure I do remember getting a "your crime was seen" message, the Vahnatai didn't go hostile and I was able to finish the scenario without trouble. It's a great weapon, so I strongly recommend stealing the thing. I prefer the waveblade over the flaming sword; the flaming sword is only more expensive because a magical item is always much more expensive than a non-magical one.

And, uh, I was able to learn Capture Mind and Simulacrum from them. Odd.

Alternate transportation? in Blades of Avernum Editor

Editing the source won't do it; remember, BoA itself isn't open source, so there's no point letting the editor make things that the game can't recognise.

You might be able to fake a new means of transportation in interesting ways using scripting, but there's no easy way to do it.

Well, it won't actually be double speed for very long, since once they're at higher levels they level more slowly. If the XP falloff works as I think it does, I'd guess a 2-PC party would only level about 40-50% faster in the long run, but I haven't tested this.

It only calls itself "Unix-based", never Unix. Apple has good lawyers who are careful about language.

A workaround for players is to have the PCs stand around in field-free spots and not end combat mode until the fields have faded. A slight nuisance, but shouldn't take more than 5 or 10 rounds.

I suspect the engine doesn't differentiate between a dead character and a nonexistent character as well as it should. BoE's didn't, which made the Kill Party node display some interesting behaviour.

The hidden empire fort is to the northeast of Fahl. You may need to get the mission to destroy it from the Hill Runners before you can see it. If you want to help the Empire, don't go in past where the soldier stops you.

On the other hand, a few villains also have the strangest tendency to do the same thing instead of beating you to a pulp. Sure, they could kill you now, but they'd much rather let their minions do it -- and anyway, they have an appointment with their hairdresser in 15 minutes.

I think it's pretty balanced as is, although it'd be nice if Bolt of Fire and Ice Lances improved a little more at higher levels; once one has Lightning Spray and Fireblast, the lesser attack spells aren't very useful.

Surely the ability to cause riots can only serve to make art more interesting?

That's the problem with art, really -- it only works the first time.
