Rules like that aren't so much about morality or even creating an atmosphere conducive to learning as they are about projecting a certain public image. I went to a hoity-toity private school which, although officially associated with the Presbyterians, was effectively secular, and it had many of the same rules, only more so. Even piercings were banned -- not even earrings for girls were allowed (although in practice this rule was enforced only selectively).

What, so that they can all learn from each other and become more efficient criminals once they get out? :P

Okay, this isn't General, so we probably shouldn't start that sort of discussion here.

Different schools will be different. Believe it or not, the Pope does not personally interfere in the operation of every single Catholic school to make sure they're all run the same way.

To put it more succinctly, engine is a game's form as distinct from its content. Every Blades of Avernum scenario, by necessity, uses the same engine -- if you change all of the towns, dialogue, terrain, monsters, items, and other changeable things from one scenario to another, the engine is all of the stuff that they still have in common.

It's an idiom that means "where I live". As Drakey said, it's unlikely that a pun was intended.

It was once considered correct style to treat words starting with H as if they started with a vowel for purposes of the a/an distinction. This was presumably some kind of upperclass affectation.

Yes, this means that at one point people would have said "an happy guy". Well, except that they probably didn't refer to people as "guys" back then.

In common English usage, that's the only distinction. Anime is, well, animated. Manga is a particular artistic style.

(In Japanese, the word "anime" is used to describe all animation, regardless of its artistic style or country of origin.)

Well, I've aged two years since the first picture was taken. Also, the second picture was obviously taken under different lighting conditions, using flash photography.

Let's not start a fight here, guys. It's true that the manner of celebration of Christmas today results from the syncretisation of a bunch of pagan solstice festivals; this is a historical fact. However, Christians are of course entitled to hold a festival on any day of the year that they like, and use whatever excuse for it they like.

Most people from Ireland aren't Dutch.

As for the topic of this thread, well, you get what you pay for. There are only a handful of good games which can legally be obtained for free.

Very nice. There are still new BoE scenarios being made, so if you make graphics of that quality, there's a reasonable chance they'll be used.

Hm ... I was quite certain that the disguised boy with eyeglasses has nothing to do with Thuryl. Now I'm not sure anymore.

Er, if you're implying that I resemble the face of the image I used to lock topics, that's actually the face of cult leader Sun Myung Moon photoshopped onto a picture of a Sailor Moon cosplayer. It has no significance beyond being an awful, awful pun. You can see a larger version here. (Caution: not safe for fragile minds.)

I'm still a little worried by the idea that you think I look like a distorted version of Sun Myung Moon, though.

Seraphim are often depicted as being made of fire. Fire is hot. Hot air rises. Therefore we may safely assume that seraphim are found at the tops of caves.

Even the Pseudo-Dionysius said so, so it must be true!

quote:
Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, as quoted in Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologica:
First, the movement which is upwards and continuous. This signifies that they are borne inflexibly towards God.
See? You can't argue with the Pseudo-Dionysius!

They're not the same. One of the ringed planets is larger than the other, but it's further away, so it looks like it's the same size.

The entire purpose of a classroom setting is to allow the teacher to teach the same material to a large number of students at the same time. Teaching different material to different students in the same class would defeat that purpose.

I didn't lock this because I thought it might be potentially useful to someone and I was trusting people not to spam it up. Clearly I was mistaken on at least one count.

In future, uh, please don't reply to topics that have been dead for five months?
