The mighty mouse cramps my hand something fierce. I generally like the concept of it for non gaming users, but it's also difficult to use in gaming when I may need to quickly switch between mouse buttons. My scroll wheel would gum up weekly and have to be rubbed with cleaning solution to work again. I quickly reverted to my old standby the Microsoft Wheel Mouse. This has to be one of the most comfortable mice I've used, and It's simple and responsive. A great mouse for any computer. At work we buy these by the case for our Mini's, iMacs, and PC's. http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=008 -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

I added two users, macdude22 and grinnelltech, they should effectively make it impossible for last.fm to classify the group. macdude22 is my personal account and grinnelltech is last.fm running on a music box in my tech room. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Redownload the demo, install, grab the reg code out of it. Email Spiderweb with your information (including the new reg code from the new download) and they will generate a new key for you. They keep all your pertinent information on hand so as long as they can verify you've purchased you can always get a new key. Jeff Vogel runs an honest shop round these parts. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Maybe the Windows builds are different but they always just change the resolution on my Macs so that it's the right rez and right aspect ratio, just drops the black bars on the side to maintain the proper aspect ratio. On my 20" imac the 800x600 games are a little pixelated but generally it seems to scale these exceptionally well (also starcraft). -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

quote:I hold a BA in Social Sciences Comprehensive w/emphasis in History. I'm starting graduate school in the Fall for MS in Project Management. After that I'm planning on getting something ALA approved as I'd like to work in a Library someday. I'm pursuing the MSPM first because it is more directly useful in my current position. I also am only a few credits short of a Philosophy minor but I was offered my current position my last year of school and didn't want to pass it up so I graduated sans Philosophy minor. I currently work in IT (been doing it since high school, this factors into why I got a degree in something else, who wants to do IT forever). I have the fortune of working at a small Liberal Arts college which affords me the opportunity to further personal, professional, academic, and literary goals. Currently mowing through a large stack of Ayn Rand books, both her works and derivative works. I personally find a large number of things interesting, trashy sci-fi, good sci-fi, philosophy, politics, film, cats, etc... If I find something interesting I go research it. A fe weeks ago I was on a parliamentary process bender dipping my toes into books on parliamentary politics and the Westminster system. I *heart* the library. On a side note, Student Loans eat me alive. Bless the dollar menu. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Jeff has previously suggested he at least has a passing interest in digital console distribution (even if a very small fraction of current console owners were interested it could be very profitable). I'm not sure what Microsoft's plans are for the XNA stuff (the games are free right now but I'm pretty sure they are scheduled to be paid for at some point) but XNA might be a viable option for something. I can't imagine the current games being ported due to control issues but aybe a streamlined Avernum or Geneforge game. I'd play a 2.5d isometric action RPG in the Avernum or Geneforge universes. There have been a couple efforts on Xbox Live but they have had really shoddy stories. Arkadian Warriors comes to mind, gameplay was reasonably fun but NO quality storyline, tell them to contract Jeff Vogel out for writing. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

You'll get a bigger view of the grand picture that is Avernum. Think of it as say, a series of books like The Dresden Files. Each book can be read independently with no real loss but reading them in order builds a sense of continuity. Not plot busting information but nice like the cherry on top of a sundae. You'll defiantly feel more vested in the world playing them in order. And when you get to A5, switching sides, flipping the coin so to speak, brilliant. As the Trilogy is under 50 bucks you get a lotta game (as in hundreds of hours, put the coffee on game). -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Totally off topic but if Spiderweb made something new with the old Avernum style engine in a higher rez (1024x768 or higher) I would die a happy man. Not that Avernum 5 isn't the greatest game they've ever made because it is but I loved the A1-3/BoA engine. It made for such a vast feeling world and I'm a keyboard functioning man. I've now booted Avernum 1-5, BoA, and Geneforge 1-4. They all seem to operate successfully in 10.5.2. P.S. Avernum 5 really is the best. I didn't sleep for 2 days after I got it. If I'm ever in the Washington area I owe Vogel a beer for making so much entertainment for so few dollars. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Well I just booted and played through 5 minutes of A1-3 and BoA. None of them displayed the graphics corruption that was occuring when I first installed 10.5. I'm running 10.5.2 so either Jeff fixed it or a patch fixed it. Either way it should be golden. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Avernum 5, hands down. Otherwise I hold a special place in my heart for Avernum 1 just because it's the first Spiderweb Game I owned and played all the way through. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |
Stargate Episode Prisoners - Exile/Avernum Link? in General | |

Just for clarification, I only meant the writers for this specific episode. I've watched SG-1 since it's debut on Showtime in 97, but at the original time I watched this episode I didn't make any connection. Having recently over the past year been making my way back through the Avernum games I found this specific episode to have striking similarities to to the world of Exile/Avernum. Being that Exile was released before this episode of SG-1, I don't think it's inconceivable that perhaps there was some influence, though it's likely just a coincidence. I've been following the Stargate MMO, with great interest, if pulled of right it could be a hella fun game to sink your teeth into. Probably will fall into the usual grind, rinse, repeat MMO structure. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

I've been watching my way through Stargate from the start and just hit episode 2x03 "Prisoners". I wonder if the writers of this had played Exile. The similarities are striking. People banished to an underground prison through a magic gate. Lack of real justice, no appeals, the justice body is judge, jury, and executioner. A team of 4 adventurers. I couldn't help but imagine SG-1 in Avernum/Exile. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

I believe this is what you are looking for. http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/ordering.html For the paltry cost of $25 you get 3, count them 3 licenses. One for each game in the series, 1, 2, 3 Contact. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Now that I'm settled into career life I'm considering going to graduate school in Library Science or something since my employer will foot a large chunk of the cost. Probably not until 2009 give myself one more year of no school. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Today's kids don't want it if it don't got those wham bam dizzle fancy thrueedee graphix, they probably steer clear of us old farts here. Even some helpdesk students don't understand how I can stand stuff like Final Fantasy 1. I'm like its awesome, and even more awesome with the Messiah Wireless controllers(yea I'm hard core about my FF1). They are like you got yer big screen and a 360 why not play that. It's not like I'm that much older than these whipper snappers (25) but there is a graphics divide somewhere in there. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Stuffit is still around somehow. A compression format of the days of yore. I even stuck with its paid versions until version 11 (long after most had given it up but I was nostalgic for it). Version 12 added nothing near as I can tell and they wanted another 30 bones for the update. No thanks guys, it's been a fun 15 years but I'm off to .zip. You can get the free expander for it @ http://www.stuffit.com/ You can get a demo of EV:Nova @ http://www.ambrosiasw.com Of no particular intrest to anyone, I'm one of the few that owns the EV:Nova card/board game. It's pretty complex but manages to equate most of the game functions to cards and a game board. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |
