I came to the Nethergate party late (never played it until NG:R) but it's by far my favorite SW game. I have a BA in History so I found the setting and the attention to the mythology of the time fascinating. After that Avernum 2 is high on my list. But then the middle of trilogies tend to be the meatiest, most interesting parts. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Shipping is only $2 and the CDs are real handy (no mucking with requesting keys). And when you buy the trilogy the CDs are included so there's no extra cost incurred there either. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

I think you can just download the demo and install it, if you have a registered version it will keep that registration on the updated version and it won't copy over your save files or anything. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

The speed hasn't bothered me, and quick travel gets across the world pretty quickly. The developer is hardly lazy and has been very responsive to bug reports and has quickly issued fixes for several problems. Increased movement may come in a later patch otherwise there are plans for increased walking speed in Book II. I personally don't feel like the walking speed as is hinders my enjoyment of the game. To be frank it's been my experience that the walking speed hasn't bothered most users of the game , but it may be a deal breaker for some. I'd suggest playing around for a while and you'll find a game with a rich stats system, solid story, and plenty of entertainment. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Unfortunately what you think and what is aren't all that similar (note the serenity reference). It's against Apple's Terms of Service to run the OS on non-Apple hardware. You may or may not be able to get a copy you purchase running on Non-Apple hardware but you probably won't find much help here on how to circumvent the protections put into place. For probably twice the cost of the 129 for a retail copy you can find something used (200-300) that will come with a licensed copy of 10.3 or higher (all macs are licensed for whatever OS they originally came with). Apple often runs deals on late model mini's as well. Also there are no "freeware" versions of Mac OS X, the latest version Apple provides free is 7.5.5 I believe. http://www.baucomcomputers.com/ is a good place to look for used Mac equipment if you're not into ebay. quote:You've got to manage pretty well yes. Theoretically you could rest to get random encounters (which eventually will drop a few items for sale) but it would be very time consuming. You've really do have to manage your money supply, do you have enough for alchemy supplies, for your armor upgrade, for healing services, etc... It's a challenge I managed to spend too much on alchemy supplies and lacked funds for proper armor for some time after. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

In a sense they are, there will likely always be individuals that will only buy one or the other. However I think that most that like one would by products from the other. They are similar in charm, quality story, yet quite unique in gameplay style and mechanics. At first I was like solo, I don't do solo. But I've come to enjoy rolling a few different characters and learning to adjust play style accordingly. The garbage the commercial production houses are calling RPGs these days is appalling. Blue Dragon, Blue Drag On they should have called it. Eternal Sonata was pretty decent but it's a gem in pile of RPG coal. Spiderweb and now basilisk are focusing on what made us love the RPG genre in the first place, great stories, good gameplay (something Final Fantasy used to stand for Pre VIII) Thats what keeps me coming back for more, Spiderweb has been providing the goods and Basilisk seems to be dropping the fun b0mb on us as well. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

quote:It's a moot point, the Mac build is due out in less than a week and in this cause, contains all the bug fixes that have been found in the Windows build of Eschalon. Installing OS X on anything but apple hardware is against their EULA and probably a pain. I probably wouldn't deal with it (well I have a Mac so I wouldn't) but my geek eye twinkles when I see someone accomplish such geekery filled feats. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Well, I'd argue that most prefer applications in their native platform of choice. I prefer the Mac, so in this situation of Avernum it's win for me. In most cases it's a wait for the Mac builds of most games. I give Vogel extra love because it tickles me to see a Mac version released first. To be perfectly honest, by the time he makes the Windows builds he's ironed out most of the release bugs so the Windows users do get a benefit of the wait. Whichever comes first you'll not hear me complain about cross platform releases, especially of good games like Avernum, Geneforge, and Eschalon. More people get to enjoy a good game, and the developer (hopefully) gets to see some financial benefit from that enjoyment. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Avernum 5 was the quickest I've ever played through a spiderweb game. Quickest in days I mean, not hours. I just lived off coffee and Power Edge for a week was all. A5 simply drew me in. I've also been playing Eschalon: Book 1. It certainly qualifies for the Retro moniker while maintaining a certain amount of modernity (Similar to the recent graphical niceties added to A5). The play style is different from Avernum, Solo vs. party it has more of a DnD or Ultima feel to it while I get a classic FF/Dragon Warrior vibe from Avernum. Which is great, I like Ultima and Dragon Warrior. I'd say if you're done with A5 go take a look at Eschalon while we wait for Geneforge 5. Some might say they are now competetors, but It seems to me they are both bringing some compelling gameplay to the table and perhaps a couple of Retro Devs can help solidify and grow this market (of superior RPGs). Heck maybe you can get some cross advertising going, it seems as though there are a good number of individuals over there who aren't familiar with Spiderweb. Increased sales for all! -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Different strokes for different folks. I'm a Mac FANATIC for sure, but whatever works. Lotta folks like tinker this tinker that, not the platform for them. I know people that thrive on having problems with their frankenputers. I think they have a genetic irregularity that causes them to die if they don't have something to fix on their computer. I'd hate to see them wither away from lack of sustenance. I'll tell you to get a Mac day in day out but XP with the latest patches, firefox, and AVG is generally pretty solid. Vista....that's a different story, BANE of my work existence. As for reliability, 9 times out of 10 I'll agree but every so often you get a model that has some sort of inherent issue. I've seen a batch of Macs come in with say bad ram, and a batch of HPs come in with bad hard drives. In general I think apple tends to use higher quality components than the big box PC manufactures, however users building their own machine or getting a bit higher end windows box tend to purchase similar quality components. In closing, I'm a Mac FANATIC, but no Mac Bigot. I'm down with whatever. However, if you call me after hours with your Windows problems @ home, I direct you to apple.com I thank you Jeff for filling my Mac's voracious appetite for quality software. 20" imacs get HUNGRY. Agreed, Wendy's has reasonable prices, good reasonably fresh burgers, and you can get chili, an aight baked potato, or a salad as your side at no extra charge is a mega bonus. Single Bacon with chili, mmmmmm good on a cold winter lunch. If price is no object, Culver's makes a damn good burger but they are a bit more expensive. I suppose you get what you pay for and Culver's certainly is a step or 3 above most fast food joints. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

There are ways to hack around it to get it installed on other x86 hardware but it violates the terms of the license of the OS software which in a nutshell says you're only allowed to install this on a Macintosh. But the game is a UB, as long as you can boot the Mac OS, you should be able to run Avernum 5. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

A5 has an incredibly engrossing story, I've pretty much been playing nonstop for the past week, eat, sleep a little, go to work, and A5. I 'm just compelled to complete that next quest, or find Gladwells next item. I have to say I find the Lark and Gladwell quest arc's to be enjoyable and challenging, plus they lend a lot to the back-story of this area of Avernum. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

Why windows, or why Linux. He does what he does, he's comfortable with his workflow. Yea sounds like non OS X compatible installers (I think Avernum v1 wasn't). You can request keys from Spiderweb or you can probably get an updated CD for a nominal fee. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

I used to run on far less sleep than I do now. In high school and my first couple three years of college I was able to survive on 4-5 hours a night. Now I need a good 8. As such I had 10-20 more hours available for activities, often devoted to to whatever the latest RPG was. Now I'm almost 25, out of school, needing more sleep, married, often working overtime, doing activities in the community, etc... Gametime is seriously diminished. Every so often I put on a pot of coffee and hammer an all night session. Last week I played GRAW from 10 Saturday night til 7 Sunday morning. The wife is leaving for a craft faire this weekend, A5 is out, can my body handle another all night session so quickly? We'll find out. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

I'm not experiencing any issues with A5 on 10.5. It is running smooth for me, and so far the story is solid. The Dock turns wonky after quitting but running the mouse over them turns them back. My parallels seems to do a similar thing. A4 is continuing to give the corrupt lines across the screen. I've got a few odd colored lines when I boot Avernum 4, I've reinstalled the game as well. Hopefully it's fixed soon as I need to hit the A4 for a refresher before A5. I haven't installed 10.5 on my MBP yet so I may just play it on there, I hadn't installed yet because GroupCal hasn't been updated for 10.5 compatibility yet, what I was grumbling about I may now soon be happy about. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

As a recent adopter of BoE I'm slowly slogging through scenarios. But alas I prefer BoA but there are some real fun BoE scenarios I've run into so far. Id say if you're having fun, go with the flow but if you're looking for my opinion I say make me a BoA scenario (I'm selfish like that). -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |
