I recently downloaded a .sit file and now I have know idea how to read it. Does anyone know 1) What program(s) can read/process this file? 2) What types of items are stored in .sit files (as in compressed files, applications, etc.) 3) Is there a mac demo for EV:Nova? I have a 2.4 dual core intel mac with 2gb of ram. Any answers would be nice. Thanks. [ Sunday, January 06, 2008 19:31: Message edited by: The Ratt ] -------------------- Hmm... It's an older Mac format, popular in the late 90s. I suggest Stuffit. -------------------- Your flower power is no match for my glower power! Posts: 3726 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Stuffit is horrible adware now. Use The Unarchiver instead. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Stuffit is still around somehow. A compression format of the days of yore. I even stuck with its paid versions until version 11 (long after most had given it up but I was nostalgic for it). Version 12 added nothing near as I can tell and they wanted another 30 bones for the update. No thanks guys, it's been a fun 15 years but I'm off to .zip. You can get the free expander for it @ http://www.stuffit.com/ You can get a demo of EV:Nova @ http://www.ambrosiasw.com Of no particular intrest to anyone, I'm one of the few that owns the EV:Nova card/board game. It's pretty complex but manages to equate most of the game functions to cards and a game board. -------------------- http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=412684821 alexkaltsas.com Posts: 145 | Registered: Sunday, February 18 2007 08:00 |

I'm a sucker for .tar.gz, but that's just my UNIX talking. Yes, I do make those on my Mac quite regularly. :P -------------------- Your flower power is no match for my glower power! Posts: 3726 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

tar.gz is probably the best way to offer anything for download. I don't know a platform that doesn't support it natively - I know OSX contains tar and gzip, and WinZip can extract tar.gz as well (not sure about compressing). Privately, I've switched to 7zip for storing files. I've compared it to gz and bz2, and it is usually at least as efficient while being several times faster. Prompted by the subject, I now inquire if anyone has a .sea file of StuffitExpander version 6.0. If so I ask that you please e-mail it to me. quote:I hope you don't have dial-up internet, as the compressed file exceeds one hundred fifty megabytes. Because conversations don't always end when the original topic has been exhausted? —Alorael, who wonders why anyone talks on Spiderweb at all. It must be some mysterious social urge that drives otherwise ordinary (sort of) people (mostly) to an internet forum where they can flee from fluffy turtles and engage in odd cult-like behavior. The wonderful thing about Polaris is that it's immortal. It doesn't matter how many times it goes down, it always gets right back up and does what it does best. —Alorael, who has a sneaking suspicion that what it does best is nothing, perhaps even in multiple senses of the word. With cats, sit is not enough. You need sudo. —Alorael, who prefers to finish the sentence with "going down in flames." That's less ambiguous in one way but more so in more appropriate ways. Yes, more appropriate in more ways than one, too. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
