It's good to see someone excited about the Avernum trilogy (or should I say quadrilogy these days :P ) I can almost guarantee that you will like Avernum 2 even better than Avernum 1. :)

Where did your online name come from?

Mine was just a random name I thought up a long time ago when I was starting a new game of Baldur's Gate.

Ever since, Tyranicus has been my name for every RPG and every online community.

I'm not quite sure, but I think you can't get to Erika until much later in the game. I don't exactly know because I cheated and used the Orb of Thralni to get there before the guards would let me in. I did notice that after I met with Prazac, the guards did not try to stop me though.

Finally, a city that welcomes me with open arms.

Lartaynior sat in the office of the mayor of Torfen. Tyrioz was a small man, almost dwarfish in stature, who was taller sitting down than he was standing up.

"I can give you 800 of my fighting men, but I will need to keep the rest to defend my city, your grace."

Hardly surprising for a city that was built without a care for defense.

For as long as Avernum has been settled, there was a merchant encampment along the east bank of the small lake in the steam caverns between Almaria and the Tower of Magi, but it was only in 973 IE that King Edward established the city of Torfen in hopes of drawing people out of the overpopulated Great Cave. Situated as it was in the middle of civilized Avernum, defense was the last thing on the minds of the designers. There were no walls. In fact, it was the only city in Avernum without walls. Now, it boasted a hastily constructed cavewood pallisade around it, but that was nothing compared to the stone walls of the other Avernite cities.

"That will be fine, my lord mayor," he said rising from his seat, "Now if you will please excuse me, I have matters that need my attention."

"Of course, sire. I have things to do as well," said Tyrioz picking up scroll.

-------------

As he walked through the streets of Torfen, he saw one of his lieutenants running up to him.

"What is it, Davon?"

"Sire, our sentries have spotted a group of men approaching from the east."

"Well, let's take a look, shall we?" asked the king as he strode toward the eastern pallisade.

OoC: I officially offer an alliance with Serith. I'm not in Northeast Exile yet, but I will most likely get there soon. I certainly can't go west, with Alec's barbarians rampaging around. :P

IC:

First he asks for my help, now he defies me. I should raze this city to the ground.

Lartaynior was again in his command tent, this time outside of Blosk. He had rethought his decision to leave Blosk behind. There are too many good fighting men to be had. Unfortunately, Renlo had also been doing some rethinking. Realizing that the Abyss Knights were unlikely to directly attack a walled city, such as his, he had decided not to pledge allegiance to the king after all. At least Blosk is easy to besiege. I don't know what I could have done at Almaria if Stannwick hadn't turned craven.

The siege was going well. He knew that Blosk relied on the mushroom fields in the lands surrounding for it's sustanance. Without those fields, they wouldnot be able to hold out much longer. Also, he had a plan to get inside.

"Sire, Iss-tha is here."

"Send him in."

A tall, fierce-looking Slithzerikai stooped to enter the tent. He looked proud, but he was also covered in dust.

"How is that tunnel coming?" Lartaynior asked bluntly.

"Very well, my lord," said Iss-tha in a sibilant voice, "We believe that we are directly under the walls at this very moment."

"This is good news." These Sliths from Gnass have proved good allies against the men from Blosk. I never thought I would be glad for something like this, but thank the gods Renlo is a racist. The Mayor of Blosk was well-known for his hatred of Sliths. This made it quite easy for Lartaynior to ally with the Sliths of Gnass. While they refused to fight, they had no problems digging a tunnel into Blosk.

"When can I expect the work to be done?"
"We should be ready in 4 days, sir."
"Very good. You may go."

--------------------

It was the dark of night. Lartaynior, the 10 men that comprised his personal guard, and Thomys, his mage sneaked out of the abandoned house in the northeast corner of the city. Silent as shades, they crept along the streets of Blosk, ducking into shadows whenever a guardsman past. Finally, they reached the mayoral residence, and Thomys quickly cast a sleeping spell on the guards outside the door. His guardsmen waited just inside, as Lartaynior crossed the room and quietly opened the door to Renlo's bedchamber. The mayor was snoring loudly. Lartaynior crept to his side and in one move put his dagger to the mayor's throat. Renlo jerked awake.

"Speak one word, and I'll cut out your throat."

Renlo nodded, terrified.

"Do you swear allegience to Lartaynior, your rightful king?"

Renlo nodded again.

"I'll have a binding oath. Thomys, cast the spell."

Thomys waved his hands, and a pruple light surrounded Renlo.

"Swear an oath," Lartaynior commanded.

"I pledge myself, my city, all it's properties, and my men to your service, King Lartaynior," Renlo alsmost whisperer in a terrified voice.

"Thank you. That spell makes your oath binding. If I were you, I wouldn't try to find out what would happen if you break that oath. I will leave you now. I'm sure you have matters that need your attention. Matters such as opening your gates to my men.

"O-of c-c-course, Sire," Renlo bowed and all but ran out of the room.

"You do know that my spell was nothing but a simple light spell, Your Grace?"

"Of course I do, but he doesn't," Lartaynior smiled for the first time since the siege of Blosk had started.

Curse the Knights of the Abyss! Curse them to... well, the Abyss.

Lartaynior was in his command tent in the middle of his army's encampment outside the western gates of Almaria. He had bypassed Dharmon and Blosk and was now trying to negotiate with Stannwyk, the mayor of Almaria. After abandoning the two western cities, he had received an urgent message from Renlo, the mayor of Blosk asking for his help. The Knights of the Abyss were making him quite nervous. He dug his own hole. Let's see him get out of it. At least Roband isn't coming crying to me. Of course Dharmon is one of the most defensible cities in all of Ermarian, above or below.

He had made a tactical decision to move on to Almaria in the hope of garnering more support before attempting to take on these ruffians from the Abyss. I'm not afraid of these uncivilized wretches, but I'll lose a sizeable amount of men trying to dispatch them. His 34,000 men were a sizable force, but compared to the almost inexaustable supply of men that the Knights of the Abyss could field. For every man we kill, two more brigands will take their place. These dregs of society have ruined all my well-laid plans.

A voice came from outside the tent. "Sire? Mayor Stannwick is here to speak with you."

"Thank you, Meryn, send him in."

The tent flap was pulled back, a tall, thin man in his 50's with gray hair and a very solemn face stepped in and immediately got down on one knee. "Your grace, I pledge my fealty to you as the rightful king of Avernum. I realize that I gain nothing by resisting you. Almaria, the surrounds, and the garrison 1,500-strong is yours."

"I don't suppose this change of heart would have anything to do with the army I have outside you gates, would it?"

"Are you questioning my valor, sir?" said Stannwick in a prickly tone. He was a very serious man of the sort that considered honor to be the most important thing.

"Certainly not. A jest, in bad taste perhaps."

"This is no laughing matter, sire."

"Of course not, I apologize."

"In that case, the matter is forgotten."

This man has one huge mushroom up his arse. I'll have to be carefull what I say about him. All the same, I finally have one of the great cities under my rule, and another 1,500 fighting men. Most importantly, he had access to the only bridge across the river running through Great Cave. Now he could move eastward and hopefully gather more support.

OoC: This is my first RP, so bear with me a bit.

As he paced along the walls of Fort Remote, Lartaynior, nominal King of Avernum and commander of the remnants of the once-mighty Army of Avernum, pondered his next move. As the last surviving relative of King Gideon, he had a very legitimate claim to the Avernite throne, but he somehow doubted that the mayors of Dharmon, Blosk, and Almaria will recognize that claim.

They've gotten a taste for power. Once you have power, it's hard to give it up.

Since the massacre at the Castle, the mayors had become kings in all but name, with the Great Cave divided into 3 city-states. He had sent messengers to each of them, asking for their pledges of loyalty. The responses he received were eloquently worded, but refusals all the same.

At least I have my men to back me up.

He had been a well-liked general before the revolt. He did not share his distant cousin's fondness for cruelty and was regarded as a brilliant tactician. He had a gift for inspiring loyalty in his men. His men would not be enough to take on the Great Cave however. The walled cities are tough nuts to crack.

If only there were a way to go north through the wilds and find a tunnel that connected to the Abyss....

Name: Knights of Old Avernum (KOA)
Leader Name: King Lartaynior
Location: Avernum, Fort Remote and west.
Description: As a distant relative of the king, General Lartaynior had been given command of a sizeable portion of the army of Avernum and was clearing out a major clan of bandits in the lands west of Fort Remote. Upon hearing of the massacre in the Great Cave, Lartaynior crowned himself as king and wasted no time at all consolidating his position in Fort Remote. His goals are to eventually restore order to the Great Cave and perhaps the Eastern Gallery at some point in the distant future.
