Only 2 people (I'm one of them, and I presume Slarty is the other) have played any of the Dragon Warrior/Quest games? This is quite disturbing. You people need to learn more of your geeky heritage! :P

Edit: Btw, I have played old NWN (not to be confused with the recent Bioware game which is also quite good), but I'm curious if Ultima Online is considered too recent to be put in that category, or if it belongs with the other Ultima games.

WoW's system requirements are rather low by today's standards actually. If your computer can't play it, you probably need to upgrade anyway. :P

You can build a computer capable of playing WoW for $300 easily, which means about $500 for a comparable pre-built machine.

Lartaynior pondered the message he had just received. It had arrived via lizardback courier from Blosk. Can these "Disciples of Khoth really provide me with a foothold in the Eastern Gallery? If so, they will be a welcome ally. I suppose it doesn't hurt to see.

He reached into the desk and pulled out a piece of parchment, dipped his quill in ink, and composed his reply.

Dear sir:

We will be quite pleased to provide you with as much mushroom meal and salted lizard as you need in return for this foothold in the Eastern Gallery that you speak of. I am afraid that I am woefully out of touch with that section of the caves. When last I heard, a small group of soldiers were fighting the Vahnatai there. Do you have more recent news? If so, information about the situation in the Eastern Gallery would be most welcome.

As was discussed in the OoC thread: Each member of the Avernum RP should post summaries of their posts here and keep editing new summaries in.

Faction: Knights of Old Avernum

Characters:
Lartaynior: King of Avernum and leader of the Army known as the Knights of Old Avernum, now deceased.
Selwyn: Lartaynior's chief diplomat, currently at the Knights' outpost in the Tower of Magi Ruins, a joint venture with the Avernite Protection League.
Cressen: General in Lartaynior's army, now deceased.
Petyr: General commanding the KoA and co-ruler of Avernum.
Thomys: Formerly Lartaynior's personal mage, now co-ruler of Avernum.
Roband: Rebellious mayor of Dharmon.

Contact with:
Abyss Knights: The KoA and the AK are certainly not on friendly terms. However, neither faction considers it worth the effort to fight the other.
Avernite Protection League: An alliance between the APL and the KoA is currently in place. The two factions, sharing many common goals, are quite friendly towards each other.
Khoth's Disciples: The KoA and KD are currently allies as well. The KoA are providing food, for which KD will be giving information about the Eastern Gallery.
Dominion of the Learned: The KoA and the DL currently have a trade agreement.

1st Post: Lartaynior at Fort Remote musing about taking the Great Cave.

2nd Post: Lartaynior at Almaria thinking about the threat of the Abyss Knights and receiving Mayor Stannwick of Almaria's pledge of fealty.

3rd Post: Lartaynior at Blosk coercing a pledge from Mayor Renlo.

4th Post: Lartaynior at Torfen (city between Almaria and ToM) talking to Mayor Tyrioz and learning of patrol arriving from the east.

5th Post: Lartaynior at Torfen receiving report of portal from Tower of Magi and dispatching Selwyn to meet expedition from Upper Avernum.

6th Post: Selwyn between Torfen and ToM meeting up with envoys from Upper Avernum and escorting them to Torfen.

7th Post: Lartaynior in Torfen receiving and accepting an offer of alliance from Khoth's Disciples.

8th Post: Selwyn at ToM meeting envoys from the Dominion of the Learned / Lartaynior at Torfen entering into an alliance with the Dominion. / Cressen at Mertis discovering horrific devastation.

9th Post: Cressen at Mertis under attack by undead.

10th Post: Lartaynior at Torfen escaping just before Ohvol destroys the city.

Selwyn was surprised to see a group of people marching his way. They're faster than we thought they were. His party was about halfway between Torfen and the Tower of Magi.

"Come on men, let's hurry it up. We want to find out who these people are."

"Yes, sir," said Lt. Mandon, the officer in charge of the troops.

They hurried forward, and the other group followed suit.

When they finally got close enough to speak, the woman leading the other column asked, "Who are you?"

I am Lieutenant General Selwyn, chief of the diplomatic core of majesty, King Lartaynior of Avernum. Am I correct in presuming that you have come from the Tower of the Magi?"

"You are sir, but not originally. I am Morgain, a representative from Commander Stephen Samuels of Upper Avernum. We have come from the upper caves in search of allies."

"You have come to the right people then. I have been sent to escort you to Torfen, where his grace awaits."

"Torfen? Why is the king in such a backwater. What's wrong with the Castle?"

"The Castle has been destroyed, ma'am. The Great Cave has gone through quite a turmoil. His majesty is attempting to restore order."

"Alright, well you can take me to him."

"Then, I suggest that we get on our way."

"The Tower of Magi has been all but obliterated, your grace," said Barstan, the leader of the scouting party Lartaynior had sent east.

All the money that went into rebuilding it, only to have it razed again. How typical.

"Did you find anything salvageable?"

"A few scrolls, and some potions. I sent them to Thomys. There is one other thing, sire."

"Yes?"

"While we were examining the ruins, a portal appeared in the center of the tower. It was only there for a few seconds, but it was quite obviously a magical portal."

"Did anything come through?"

"No, your grace."

"Alright. Did you have anything else to report."

"No, sire, that is all."

"Dismissed, soldier"

"Yes, sire," saluting smartly, Barstan strode out of the room.

Lartaynior had taken over a small inn in Torfen as his temporary headquarters and was upstairs in what had been the inkeeper's office. This news about the portal is quite interesting. It seems as if someone from Upper Avernum is trying to get down here.

"Meryn!" he called to his aide.

"Yes sire?"

"Send for Selwyn please."

"Right away sire."

Selwyn had been the the liason between Avernum proper and the upper caves many years before. He was now part of Lartaynior's staff as a diplomat.

In a few minutes, the gray-haired ambassador came into the room.

"You wanted to see me sire?"

"Yes. Take a squad of 50 men and go to the ruins of the Tower of Magi. I have reason to believe that the people of Upper Avernum are attempting to contact us. I would like you to be there if they succeed in getting a message through the portal."

"Yes, sire. I can be ready to leave within the hour."

"Very good. The sooner you can make it to the tower, the better I'll feel."

Only the gods know what might happen if someone else is there to great a delegation from above.
