I think the role of the Christian church(es) in the development of European culture is overrated, or at least it was not a positive role. One should not be too focused on the barbarian tribes of the North, who indeed gained something from the fact that the Church preserved and spread parts of (southern) European civilization after the fall of Rome. Southern Europe already had a unique and highly developed culture long before that crazy shepherd cult came along. The Greeks adopted many achievements of the oldest developed societies (such as Egypt), and added an emphasis on freedom and science; Christian theology was a huge step backwards. Being proud of your heritage is OK, but it makes more sense for us to be proud of our much more characteristic secular and democratic heritage! The Romans were not that great, but they founded an empire that brought peace and prosperity. Judaism is better than its stepchildren Christianity and Islam in the sense that the Jews are not trying to convert (or destroy) the rest of mankind. That being said, it is, unfortunately, heavily influenced by the struggle for survival of a small and poor nation. "There is only this One God of ours, only these Commandments, only this Scripture!" There are desperate attempts to say "we're no sinful Egyptians, Babylonians or Persians, we're those unique crazy mountain savages who don't even like sex!". Men, at least, could have fun in most societies. The idea that sex is somehow evil is truly amazing and actually not as widespread as Arabs and Americans think it is. By the way, the roles are now reversed - Northern Europe has thrown off the yoke of the Church, and enjoys greater freedom and prosperity than Southern Europe, which was severely damaged not only by Christianity, but also by Islam. It is amazing how far you can get with "you'll get a pie in the sky when you die"... Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

quote:Well, I think Alan Kay proposed his "DynaBook" concept in the late 1960s. PDAs come closest to this idea. Google found this link for me: http://www.honco.net/os/kay.html A computer generally gives you access to online content, which is often different from traditional printed books: 1. There are hyperlinks and search engines. That's great for reference works, but some studies indicate that web surfing shortens your attention span. "Sequential" books help you focus. 2. Almost anyone can publish online. That's democratic, but the quality offered is often low. Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

I found the demo versions of Exile I-III on a magazine CD in late 1998, and I played them in order. In 1999, I purchased the Exile Trilogy CD, and started playing Exile III first. It's better to play the whole game before you even touch its sequels. Since then, I've registered all new Spiderweb games as soon as they were released for M$ Windows, more or less (Avernum 1-3 and GF1-2). Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

Actually, it's about Morrowind, which is also a huge open-ended single-player RPG. Basically, it has better graphics but worse gameplay than SW games. The journal is not that great. There's lots of text in it (with hyperlinks), but there's no quest log. Keys, quest items and gold just clutter your inventory. Movement is realistically slow. To save money (and increase your Athletics skill), you'll probably run between towns early in the game, which taxes your stamina. If you run into a monster while you're fatigued, you're in trouble. Combat is a clumsy clickfest. Not as fun as in pure shooters or in turn-based RPGs. Mana is a scarce resource. Dialog with NPCs is fairly limited, although the books compensate this to a certain degree. The topic's title was inspired by the fact that people complain if you walk around naked, but any item that you equip removes that effect. Even a ring will do - maybe they're all Great Rings granting invisibility? Graphics - the landscapes and items are great; character models and animation less so. Unreal was about as good back in 1998. Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

Let's share statistical jokes... The more pills people take, the worse their health. Hence, medication is bad for your health. 95% percent of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread. Bread makes people violent! The survival rate of water drinkers is 0. Wow, no "leggy lass" Legolas? I'm impressed... I avoid Tolkien names although (or perhaps because) I am a Tolkien fan, and often resort to Greek mythology instead. Medea is often used for a female mage, while Amazon is a female fighter. For Nephilim, I have used Werepanther (fighter), or "name + class surname": Claw Archer, Panther Blade, Tiger Shaman etc. Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

I'm experimenting a bit with Linux right now... Will Spiderweb's games run on Wine (a Windows emulatior for Linux)? I could try it myself, of course, but I could save myself the trouble if someone else has already tried. Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

It has more to do with power and ruthlessness than ideology. BTW, Guantanamo Bay = Gulag. ;) The Soviet elite was horribly corrupt and easily transformed into the Russian mafia...US politicians are sponsored by big business... Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

1. The Soviets also had weak exports and produced mainly military hardware and crap for the domestic market. 2. The environment was neglected and a huge amount of fossil fuels was consumed. 3. Despite this, a large part of the Soviet population lived in poverty. 4. Offensive wars and prestige projects (monumental buildings, space programs) helped keep the citizens happy and obedient. 5. Human rights were not respected. The secret police spied on any potential terrorist/traitor/whatever. ;) The death penalty was naturally in force. Today, the USA refuses to hand over war criminals to international tribunals... Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

I suppose you have seen the movie Seven... Jesus is quoted as saying that all sins will be forgiven, except sins against the Holy Spirit, whatever that may mean. Jesus was also asked about the most important religious laws. He answered: "You shall have no other Gods than me" and "love your neighbour as you love yourself". Screw Ayn Rand... Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

Of course gluttony and lust are considered mortal sins! However, the mortal sins are a later invention by the church establishment. American "Christians" think that avarice is OK. They also think that murder is OK, as long as the victims aren't Americans. The only thing they've chosen to accept from the Bible is the idea that having sex for fun is evil. :D Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

In Pyrog's Cave in Avernum 2, corpse tiles appear (albeit in fixed positions) if you release the mutant giants in the lab. I prefer chess-style violence. Strategy and tactics are more interesting than gore... Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

You can't get their spells by buying the fake rings, and if you only want to loot their temple, you can use the fight/end combat exploit instead. Posts: 950 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |
