Coolest thing about Avernum 4? in Avernum 4

I'll stick with the majority opinion - combat is more challenging and varied, at least in the small part I've seen so far. A couple of previously weak skills, such as First Aid, have been upgraded. Overall, a good turn-based action RPG without much micromanagement.

Returning to a fresh incarnation of Exile/Avernum after all these years has charm all by itself.

I think the combination of good parts from Avernum and Geneforge worked out, although I must admit I was dismayed when the first screenshots came out.

There's an option to adjust scrolling speed. As for mouse speed in general, there's the Windows Control Panel.

I doubt that Ash's signature in any way hurted Avernum 4 sales (don't they say that "all publicity is good publicity"?), so Jeff is needlessly demonstrating that his tail is the longest on this board.

I'm sure Alorael understands that "don't buy it" doesn't imply "pirate it".

Too early to tell. It's been a while since I played either Geneforge or Avernum, so the "Avernumforge" mixture didn't bother me much.

Even if brainwashing all citizens to make them convinced socialists is not feasible, who says we can't emulate it with sufficiently powerful computers? You know, those quantum computers becoming faster at an ever-accelerating pace.

Suppose we replace all CEOs of major corporations with little Deep Thoughts. If they can play chess better than humans, why can't they eventually make business decisions better than humans? Such a computer would have as inputs:
1. Laws directly from a government server to ensure it is more law-abiding than the liars and cheats currently in place.
2. Business data from its company.
3. Strategic goals from the owners. Oh, I'm sure it will really care about private ownership. ;)

If almost all productive work is handled by machines, many arguments against equally distributed wealth - such as the motivational force of greed - become irrelevant, since the rich won't work anyway.

Okay, so this sucks. Has anything else actually worked better so far?

It's necessary for you to seriously consider and address the possibility that humanity is in fact inherently and irreparably horrible, and that the best anyone can hope for is to stay at the top of the heap instead of the bottom.

In a thread where immortality and brain implants are discussed, the fundamental invincibility of capitalism is proclaimed. What a sweet irony.

The Conservative Shift in General

Let's not forget the Political Compass and its two-dimensional political spectrum (the two dimensions being social and economic "freedom"). Conservative and libertarian trends are both present, so capitalism is the common theme.

Reasons I thought of:
-The fall of the Soviet empire was a huge loss of credibility for state-planned economy.
-People are getting older, and old people tend to be less revolutionary. "Don't trust anyone over 30" was a popular saying around 1968.
-The more ruthless capitalist society can be self-perpetuating in the sense that people who feel insecure turn away from leftist compassion and solidarity. Note how popular American "gangsta" culture has become among common people around the world. "Dream of becoming a capitalist or a gangster, or at least blame it all on the foreigners" is the opium that is fed to the lower classes.

I'm a pretty radical supporter of free speech, so I'm against laws of this kind.

Yes, it's hardly a coincidence that Germany and Austria have such laws.

Even if only humans culturally separated tasks but did it a long time ago different abilities could have developed.
Animal kingdom analogies tell very little. Different ape species have different family structures, for example. The bonobos (wiki) are promiscuous, but this is less widely known than that gorilla alpha males have harems. Apes have culture, too, as was seen in one amusing example of baboon males becoming less violent. Overall, I'd rather look at differences between human cultures, because ape cultures are more primitive and we happen to be humans. If chimp males were better at tool use than chimp females, does that mean women can't be programmers? A typical Afghan man probably has much less in common with me concerning views on marriage than a Swedish woman has, for example.

I don't see why non-Muslims should be bound by Muslim religious superstitions. The cartoons were just an excuse for mobs of losers in search of something to do. For example, Christians in Lebanon were also attacked, although they hardly could be held responsible for the actions of a Danish newspaper.

What percentage of rapes are reported in Islamic countries, do you think? I'm thinking more of rapes committed by husbands and male relatives, which is supposedly very common, according to some anti-Islamic people. Come to think of it, it is said that most rape cases in Western countries aren't reported, let alone solved.

Also, I'm no great fan of "let's butcher 1/3 of the peons to make the rest 50.1% happier" utilitarianism. :P

This can be misleading when you're trying to figure out what the level cap actually is.

I recall that the level cap in A1 was 40 and quite straightforward. A 4-person party with one advantage or a 3-person party with 2 advantages should reach the level cap.

The A2 cap at 50 was complicated by a great slowdown in xp gain that made most characters get stuck around 45-49. I have reached level 50 on one occasion, though, and it was the max at least on my Windows version of the game.

Similar experiences here, although thahds have gone rogue a bit more often than that, if I recall correctly.

And your control would be limited by the inhabitants' options of emigration, or reversion to autarchic subsistence.
You could just use the money to rig the elections in some banana republic. If that fails, hire some mercenaries and stage a coup d'etat.

You have the right to say or write anything you want as long as it's your own original words, but when it's someone else's, that other party may have the right to prevent it from being said.

—Alorael, who is not ready to believe that open-source everything is viable. Open-source government will be a long time in coming.

The government might copyright its secrets, but shouldn't the people own the government and its intellectual property?

The production of consumer desire is thus just as much production as mining coal or rolling steel.
I can take that even further - what about the production of leisure? You can offer yourself carelessness, freedom and stress reduction. This is valuable to most people. The product doesn't have to be a fetish blessed with a brand name worthy of worship according to the corporate propaganda.

You got me there. I remember which summer it was for my first 'real' kiss, but I don't recall the date. I do remember the date of my first intercourse, though... Maybe it has to do with gender roles? Guys are supposed to 'score'.

Anyway, it took place in a park (the kiss, not the other event). We were walking side by side. She tried to feed me some BS about 'serious' relationships, but then she took the initiative. She moved in front of me, embraced me and leaned back, so as to create a certain contact of kinky bits. It was a very sensual and passionate experience.

In case anyone missed the Spiderweb newsletter:
quote:
Q: Does the game use a new engine?
A: Avernum 4 uses a HIGHLY modified version of the Geneforge engine. It
runs at a higher screen resolution, has nicer graphics, and is very
definitely an Avernum game.
Q: Does the game play like Geneforge?
A: Nope. It's an Avernum game. It is fully turn-based, and has the
Avernum game system. People who like Avernum more than Geneforge will
not be unhappy, I promise.

Which reminds me, why are/were some Vahnatai in league with the Empire in E2?

Indeed, the vahnatai brigands who had the fort in the NE tunnels were allied with the Empire, and assisted, at least with information, the kidnapping of the Crystal Souls.

Wasn't there's also a mission to kill a mad Crystal Soul in the Western tunnels? I don't recall its name, though.
