I've been told that I vaguely resemble the Avalokiteshvara...I suppose there's a certain resemblance, if you picture it with bushy red hair... The entire point of the Avalokiteshvara being that it's hermaphroditic, I'm not sure whether the comment was complimentary or insulting. EDIT: There are actually many Avalokiteshvara. Apparently, I resemble a certain one which I can't seem to find a picture of. There's a poster of it hanging in my history teacher's classroom...I'll keep looking, but as I don't know how to post an image anyway, I imagine you'll just have to stick with your mental images of me. Hmm. Well, if I'm correct, and there's a very good chance I may not be, because I don't pay attention in history class, Avalokiteshvara are the Buddhist equivalent of saints, people who are capable of and ready to attain enlightenment but deliberately delay their progression to Nirvana in order to help others achieve enlightenment, and then when everyone has become enlightened they can all continue to Nirvana. That's the definition of a bodhisattva, anyway. What I'm not sure about is whether Avalokiteshvara is synonymous with bodhisattva. I think it is... Anyway, since bodhisattva/Avalokiteshvara are so saintly and selfless, there are a lot of statues and paintings and suchlike of them, and there's one statue in particular of a certain Avalokiteshvara that I apparently resemble. One of the traits of Avalokiteshvara is that a lot of them seem to have a thousand arms. The Avalokiteshvara in question, the one I resemble, has no arms. This is one of the ways in which I do not resemble it, as I do indeed have arms. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. Avalokiteshvara is the buddha of the future, the enlightened one to come. Sort of like the messiah of the jews, or the second coming for christians. -------------------- ... Posts: 647 | Registered: Wednesday, February 19 2003 08:00 |

All righty. The statue of the Avalokiteshvara that I resemble if you squint and picture it with bushy red hair and a shirt. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. ... just add bushy, red hair and a shirt... hmmm... You seem kind of pale. I would suggest getting away from your computer and out into the sun more often. -------------------- Ebony Narhorse Mighty Yucca Brevifolia Defender! Posts: 40 | Registered: Sunday, April 27 2003 07:00 |
