what instrument do YOU play? in General

Feh. That's pretty much as far as it goes, actually. That's precisely why the drums don't work for me. I suppose I'll have to settle with creative expression in the form of the written word. Or perhaps I could compose music and have other people play it the way I know it's meant to be played. Now, there's a thought...
hmmm...

This sounds silly, but I'm asking it seriously:

Are there any instruments aside from the voice that you can play without a lot of manual dexterity? I've got a medically-related superb lack of fine motor skills and have tried to find "my instrument" to no avail. Piano, drums, trombone, and guitar are out for sure, for example.

By the way, I'm guessing Thuryl enjoys good tuneage, but that he just doesn't "feel it" the way the musically inclined are able to do. Unfortunately, I "feel it," but the body can't follow the spirit. :P

EDIT: I suppose my statement about Thuryl was accurate, then. He posted before I finished this one.

I apologize for any incoherency or unnecessary rambling in this post. I get like this when it gets late.

First: gladly. I often use this method to combat my own inner-demons (but usually if I'm in a deep funk I'll listen to music that will get me in deeper so that I feel sorry for myself. It's quite saddening, really).

Group X - Johnny Poopoopants (It's completely innane, but it should make you laugh)

Monty Python - The Spam song - for anyone who frequents a message board. ;)

Monty Python - Every Sp**m is Sacred (To protect the kiddies, I feel I should censor this one. It's silly. The blurred out word is equivalent to the male gamete.

Bass Kittens - Zim Theme (Impending Doom Remix) - hilarious.

Coal Chamber - Sway - BE CAREFUL with this one. It's very angry, so if anger isn't a motivating force for you (which I'm guessing it isn't, with the bipolar-ness ans all), stay away from this one.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (sp?) - Somewhere Over the Rainbow (pretty)

Sugar Ray - Someday - (yeah, it's poppy. So what?)

Marcy Playground - Poppies - another silly one.

Chambawumba - Tubthumping - It was inevitable, you know.

Fluke - Zion

Andy Hunter - Go

Lali Puna - Alienation (Alias Remix)

The Dust Brothers - Space Monkies - Another silly one.

Enya - (Anything by Enya on the album "Paint the Sky With Stars" is very nice)

Weezer - In the Garage (Nerds will relate to this one)

They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (yet another silly one)

Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabies (upbeat Irish folk punk)

James Brown - I Got You (I Feel Good...dadadadadadadun...)

TM Revolution - Heart of Sword (This is the intro to Rurouni Kenshin (first season, I believe) in Japanese.

Arrogant Worms - I am Cow (silly again)

I've got more, but this post is long enough as it is. I also tend to ramble when sleepy.

What is your favorite mood to be in? I know some people actually enjoy being angry or depressed because their creative thoughts become more coherent.

I have a feeling many people on here will answer "inebriated," just for the heck of it, but we'll see :P .

My favorite mood is "content." It's a balance of happiness and realism that I seem to be only able to keep for a very short stretch of time.

(Originally this was going to be a post about what everyone thought about high fructose corn syrup, but after my Cracker Jack post I would have been pushing the "innane" element of the General board too far.)

I've always been a bit disappointed with the GF games in that the creations are set in stone. I'd like to have the opportunity to make an Ur-Drakon with Eyebeast eye-stalks for eyes, personally. I know of a game called Impossible Creatures that lets you mess with creatures in that kind of fashion, so it's been done before.

It seems to me like there will always be someone who worships a Stalin or a Castro as a good leader despite the horror stories. I've come to accept that, but it still irritates me nonetheless.

Opinions often stink, as the saying goes.

Oh, but I'll be fair and give Castro a point. He did improve the healthcare system A LOT. Cuba therefore now possesses decent healthcare as opposed to dirt healthcare under the Batista regime. I don't think it redeems his poor economic capabilities and resource management skills, however.

Right now I'm taking refuge from the troll in General, but maybe this isn't the safest place... Anyway, Icshi's devotion is both amusing, and I dare say, appropriate. Everything must have a balance. Unfortunately, Icshi is the only one who really finds RW games amusing (but I happen to like GC quite a bit, so I guess he's not the only one after all), so he has to carry the burden of all of the positive comments. The result is a balance, but also major fanaticism.

Ah, yes, the grammar rodeo. Well, this proves to me yet again that 98% of Spiderwebbers are super-nerd people, are proud of this fact, and get kicks out of making witty comments based on peoples' spelling and grammar errors. Anyone "normal" who finds his or her way here is going to be slowly mutated into an opinionated silly fool.

Note that I am merely speculating; I in no way claim to be "normal." I was already a nerd when I came here. Come to think of it, almost all of us were probably nerds when we came here.

A well cooked chicken can make a lunch exciting, or as a part of supper punctuate the day on a good note. I personally enjoy the Spicy Chicken sandwiches from Wendy's® restaurants. They are worth at least five coronary bypasses and angioplasties if I do say so myself. If there's no franchise in your area, then go find one. It's darned good chicken.

Also, Chick-Fil-A® (sp) is a very good chicken place. Unfortunately, there is only one in all of Miami, and it's within a mall. I hate malls. :P I only eat there when I travel. Their lemonade is the bomb. Waffle fries! Try the basic chicken sandwich there. MMmmm...

You know what else is good too? Roast beef. It's better with barbecue sauce.

And I hope there are Outback Steakhouses in Australia, otherwise I'll have to shake my fist at those blokes like I have now done with the Foster's people. Their ribs are completely excellent. And that apple cup they give you is nice too. Oh! and try the Gold Coast Coconut Shrimp! It's a tastebud party, I tell you.

Oh, and absolutely nothing beats a Vietnamese-style spring roll. Chicken, shrimp, and whatever else wrapped in rice paper is the major shizzle in my nizzle. Har har har.

I wonder why I'm not a ball of fat! (My metabolism is rather slow, too...I guess I don't eat this stuff as often as I'd like) Apparently I remember food very well. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm hungry right now.

Oh, yeah, that reminds me. Krispy. Kreme. Doughnuts. Hot Glazed.

I call it Krispy Krack. They are made with ambrosia stolen from Zeus's pantry.

Eh. At first I found TM to be offensive, but negativity just seems to be his idiom. He uses insults and vulgarity so much in his posts that they all just seems to lose their "insulty-ness" rather fast. Maybe it really is his intention to insult people with the intent of evoking anger, but I just find it all to be very very cynical humor.

Nevertheless, the ban is fair enough. Vulgarity is really inappropriate here, and even though TM righteously tries to avoid "homogenization" by saying everything other posters won't say, I don't think anyone should be exempt from the CoC despite their convictions.

Of course, expressing oneself with cynical, insulting humor is a rather peculiar way to show conviction to uniqueness. Come to think of it, I think "Marx' Martyr" is meant to be ironic. He might be super liberal, but he's hardly a collectivist.

He definitely stands out in these forums, at least.

CLARIFICATION: In case the feelings behind this post are ambiguous, I respect TM. He's a cool guy. He's got a lose tongue, but he's still cool.

The starvation in the higher-grade places is pretty low because the people have enough money to buy from the black market. Nobody cries in the streets or anything, but there's a lot of stuff visitors know nothing about. If you get caught carrying red meat in Cuba, they can put you in prison for a very long time (10-20 years), for example. I didn't know this until a friend of mine who used to live in Cuba talked to me a couple of weeks ago about a trip she's planning in order to visit her family.

I'm not calling your sister a liar, just...uninformed. Of course, I'm biased, but family stories about getting arrested arbitrarily and malnutrition tend to produce that. My native Cuban grandparents could of course be lying about all of the suffering they had to endure in their country, but I seriously doubt it.

Suppose that your sister had visited Germany during Hitler's reign. She probably would have said the same thing. According to my German grandmother (on the other side of the family mind you; I'm total euro-trash), life was pretty difficult for her during his militant rule. Savvy leaders are usually good at hiding the truth from outsiders.

Fidel is a great speaker. If he wasn't, he'd be out of power by now.

Ahem. I wish I had seen this one sooner.

Umm, Fidel Castro has had a long reign, and is politically savvy. I'll give him that. However, he has tanked Cuba entirely. Almost everyone there starves. Relatives from the U.S. have to send money over there so Cubans can buy food off of the black market. The ration cards are laughable. They get 14 ounces of meat a year. A year, I'm not kidding, and the Cuban people are constantly trying to flee his iron grip over them. The people in Cuba are miserable, and it infuriates me that many people around the world think poor Fidel was manipulated by the U.S. and is actually a great leader. Ha ha ha. Please. Fidel made crazy demands of the United States investors, and only a political moron would have expected us to agree to his demands. Fidel is many things, but he is no moron.

He might have admitted that the ten-million ton sugar crop was a failure, but that's only because he wouldn't be able to hide the absence of millions of tons of sugar from the rest of the public, since sugar is the chief crop Cuba produces. He still insists that Cuba is doing better than ever and that Americans give him a bad rap and fabricate all of the negative stuff about him. He's conveniently using the United States as a scapegoat to gain sympathy from the rest of the world and to justify the continued state of revolution. Without such a big enemy 90 miles away, he'd lose much of his ability to rally the troops to his side (i.e. his power source).

This hits really close to home, because my father is Cuban, and my grandparents fled the country. Ask somebody in South America (where most of the historians are), and they'll side with Fidel, because Fidel operate under the guise of Communism, and Latin American historians love Communism very much. However, ask a Cuban if el presidente is a good leader and they'll tell you heck no. If you try to argue that Fidel is a good leader afterwards, they will try to burn you at a nearby stake.

So... Fidel is about as good a leader for Cuba as Stalin was for Russia, and thinking otherwise is to ignore the hard facts.

Well, there's an id-shaped attitude if I've ever seen one. I hope you're trying to stir the pot, because theft in generally considered an issue of morals. I shouldn't have to worry about someone else taking my stuff if I leave it unattended; I have a right to that property, and if someone steals it, they are infringing on my rights to my property. Boo. I agree. Jackson was a contemptible fool who had very little regard for the Native Americans who were on the land before, and decided to push west, despite the Supreme Court's decision to stop him, I believe. His response to protests against his defying of the Supreme Court went something like, "They've made their law, now let them enforce it!" He is one of my least favorite Presidents.

I think George Washington and FDR are tied. Washington not only set precedents for the "cabinet" system, he also foresaw some of the major problems the country could face with a new government, as seen in his Farewell Address. Particularly, his warning against forming political factions was very well-founded. From Anti-Federalists and Federalists to Republicans and Democrats, people have become more focused on the parties that run the country rather than the policies of those that have the power to intepret what the people want. Without Washington's sound foundations, the U.S.A. would have crumbled long ago.

FDR, of course, deserves a seat on the same level of Wahington because he was able to save the U.S.A. from certain economic collapse. He wasn't afraid to take risks and apply Keynesian economics (high-spending to stimulate the market) to the economy despite the fact that lots of people thought he was crazy. He was also legitimately elected four times, which I think is pretty telling of his ability. Granted, he almost lost the fourth term and many people were irritated that he broke the two-term tradition, but trying new things is exactly what made FDR great.

I admire Lincoln's devotion to keeping the Union together, personally. He was willing to risk his good name by supporting the emancipation of the slaves so that he could weaken the South's economic base and thus give the Union strength. Most politicians these days have a strict CYA policy, if you get my drift.

"Cracker Jack" is a brand name snack that mixes caramel coated popcorn with caramel coated peanuts, owned by the Frito Lay company, currently.

If you've ever heard "Take me out to the ball-game" before, the snack is mentioned in there, presumably long before it was owned by Frito-Lay. Could somebody go to Wikipedia or somewhere else half-decent and verify this, please? I'm too lazy to get my facts straight right now.

In response to Thuryl's suggestion of adding more peanuts, you just...can't. It's like putting cold (I mean refrigerated very much, so they won't melt quickly) chocolate chips on a warm chocolate-chip cookie. It's not nearly as satisfying. Unless you could find me a bag of caramel-coated peanuts, the addition wouldn't nearly be adequate.

I was interested to see how many people outside of America know what Cracker Jack is. I guess it really is a United-States-centric thing.

ADD: Thanks, Dolphin. I forgot about the prizes. That's what sells them to a lond of people. They come in a two-tone red and blue (Jeez, I just realized the significance of the colors) white paper wrap and are usually cards, stickers, or "holographic" images that shift in the light. The prizes are always flat. I personally preferred the nift dinosaur holograms when I was smaller. I bet if I found one somewhere, it would still smell like peanuts and sugar.

Is it just me, or have the peanuts in Cracker Jack bags and boxes been suddenly disappearing? I just opened a bag up expecting some nourishing sugar-covered-legume-and-popcorn goodness late at night, and I poured out the bag and discovered about five peanuts in it. I seem to recall a time a few years ago where there were more peanuts. Am I just imagining this?

Also, I apologize for this rather mundane post, but I had to throw it out there. I feel as though I'm losing my mind.

ADD: No no no, wait. I have indeed lost my mind! The possibility of Cracker-Jack being progressively skimpy on the peanuts has acutally caused me some concern, showing that my life is particularly frivolous at the moment. Regardless, feedback on the CJ situation would be appreciated.

Well, I just finished going through the, as TM might put it, the IB homogenization process. I'm waiting for my scores and the diploma. I thankfully didn't burn out, and the tests didn't seem bad, but I expected something more enriching.

Oh, and all the stories about not having free time is bunk. My grades were very high, and I still had Saturdays free every week. The work only becomes a problem if you procrastinate.

At any rate, I'm glad that IB isn't a horrible experience everywhere. The program can be implemented properly, apparently, based on Beamup's post. I honestly wasn't sure if that was possible.

That's just it. IB isn't supposed be be about the tests or difficulty level. The tests are just something you do at the end. The IB Organization promises that the education will be more liberal and interactive, with less rote learning and busy work. Unfortunately, my experience in the program was essentially "AP with more work." It was the same typical crud learning system as usual, so I burn with hatred for being tricked.
