Linus sounds indeed quite diffgerent then what I thought it would be, its just that on the pictures in the books it looks so much like Windows. So its completely different and free? The only problem is that I would have to get new hardware or not? I suppose my windows woulnd't be able to also have Linux on it.

Requests for future games in Avernum 4

Okay, before I start, I have to agree with kelandon about the fact that the game you like most is often the game you played first. That's why my favorite game is Avernum 3 and after that Averum 1 and 2 in that order.

Although the 3D interfaces are mostly an improvement, in many ways, it seems to me that the graphics have gotten worse, not better, in ways that really shouldn't be necessary. The buttons in the original Exile actually looked pretty cool. But ever since Avernum, they've been becoming more and more cartoony and pixelated. The text that Vogel uses for dialogues and descriptions is the most bland typeface imaginable. Same thing for the main menu screen.

I always loved the Avernum graphics, but as I (and Keladon) already said, this is purely because I first played Avernum. It took me some time to get used to the Exile graphics, and I still hate everything about Geneforge. I do think that the Nethergate graphics were an improvement, and that it became better in Avernum (that is, the graphics that changed, which weren't a lot of them). The introduction screens of Avernum 1 and 2 I really liked, also the intro music. However, this changed with Avernum 3 and BoA. That I just didn't like. The Exile 1 and 2 intro screen I also didn't really like. I saw, though, that the Avernum 3 and Boa, and Exile 3 and BoE intro screen where almost identical. Maybe that's the reason i didn't like them. However, the graphics of Geneforge I really hate. I don't really know what it is about them, but they fill me with disgust. I'm sorry if I offended any geneforge player reading this.

quote:
This may seem like a silly complaint. But it really weakened my gaming experience in Avernum and Geneforge. Having an elegant looking font and non-cartoonish interface makes the whole game feel more professional, and it isn't a matter of artistic talent. Just substitute Times instead of Geneva or whatever.
Hmmm, I never paid much attention to that, but i must say that I don't really like the cartoonish pictures in the "info" menu. In that respect Exile did a lot better (If I remember correctly, Exile didn't have them at all). I don't reallyu care about the font. Only if the font is that bad that I can't read what is written, it annoys me, but in other cases I don't care.

(now that i think about it, i did like the more "wild" font of exile. It fitted better with the rest of the game)

quote:
I'm also curious: I loved the music that came with Exile II, but that is the last music that ever came with a Spiderweb game. Is it actually owned by someone else? If not, (or if so) is it possible to just add it in as a optional feature in future Spiderweb games? And if a reasonably talented musician came along and offered their assistance, could they use the basic themes from that music to create newer music?

The music, yes, well, first time I listened to the Exile music I was very dissappointed it wasn't put in Avernum. Not long ago (maybe a month or so) I started putting the whole Exile 1 music into my notation program. Its quite hard, because I have to listen to the music and write every note down. If I just import it I get a messed up piece of music which a normal person could not possibly understand when seeing it. My plan is to take the Exile 1 music and arrange it for orchestra. I could post it somewhere when its finished, but I have the feeling that will still take some time.

quote:
Final note: I really loved the actual name "Exile" and was a little saddened when it was changed for the sake of the remake. I realize it's too late to change that now, but I thought I'd throw my two cents in.
Oh well, I like the name Avernum better, so that's just a matter of taste.

About the dialogue I happen to like Avernum more, and that's only because of the nicer (I think "eye-friendly" is the word) screen. With Exile 1 and 2 it was just a screen (grey, was it?). I didn't like that. I also got frustrated because of that you had to type a certain word to progress. This, however, can be great because you have to actually talk yourself, and not just click things. Also, when you have played Exile for a while, you tend to understand how the system works and you are more likely to type the good words. In Exile 3 and BoE the screen changed, but I still didn't really like it. This was mainly because of the smallish screen and this enormous letters in it. I was all a bit to crowded to my taste.

I only had the demo of Ferazel's wand, but I instantly liked the game and I wish i had the full version. Howvere, i'd rather spend my money on Avernum, supporting Jeff, then spending it on some other game.

About the religion, who says I didn't have some miracle talk with god himself? I was predicting the future with help of the almighty chicken gods! I hope you didn't forget that, because I think I also predicted your future... You don't need to pray for me, by the way.

Um, i don't know what happened, but the expiration note I first saw is gone, as Alorael already stated, but now I also don't see the under construction notice. Now I only see a (Maybe new, I don't know because this is the first time I bothered looking at their website) website, a website of Fantasoft.

EDIT: Jesus Bok! Can somebody explain to me if Exile is a game based on realmz or the other way around!? They look almost identical! i even saw Slitherikai in some screenshot (or whatever they call them in Realmz)

Filbert is somewhere deep in the mountain, and is getting affected by the constant barrage of illusions, because he's seeing pirates that aren't there.

I actually quite like that... Filbert effected by the sulfuric damps that come from the river, making him see strange figures such as pirates. I really like that, thanks very very much! And yes, welcome back.

EDIT:

IC:

After about ten minutes of being flabergasted, Filbert shaked his head and wiped over his forhead. he looked again around, ut the tent and the pirate were gone. he looked at the river and the uruk-Hai, flying above it. It didn't seem effected by anything. Filbert called the beast back and decided to move on.

There was a small passage along the steamy, hot river. He started to walk to it, but he heard a voice, an angry voice, in his head: What the hell are you doing! Go back and kill the mortals! Filbert stood still.

But lord, why didn't you tell me about this! If the mortals would have found it, they could have easily escaped! The river leads out of the mountain, there's even a small ship, crude and broken, but there is one here. Something, or somebody should guard it.

The voice was silent. It remained silent. Sfter a while, however, it came back: Very well. Place there the Uruk-Hai's and you go find the mortals. i'll send two to guard the place, and tell one of the three to stay with you. Again it became silent.

He waited five minutes (at least he thought it were five minutes), until he heard flapping of wings. Two uruk-Hais landed next to him. The one that flew over the river, noticing the two new uruk-Hai's, came back and landed next to filbert.

"You three will stay here. Don't let anybody pass. I'm going to seek the mortals."

The beasts stayed where they are and Filbert walked to the narrow tunel, up to the place where he previously had fought Edith and Tuulentekija.

OOC: I really hope I solved the pirate conflict in a sensible way in the fashion. All happy now?

Good god, lets stay in Europe (and the non-Europe part of Russia, and no, don't startr being all precise about this) okay? If we are going to name everybody we like we'll just end up stating who we like and don't like, and not discussing anything (by the way, Elton john is a Jazz player, no? I must say i don't really like Jazz, although i like the Jazz suite number 1 of Shostakovich).

Well, yeah, but now that we where talking about different tastes, I thought I'd immeditaly say what composers I do like and what composers I don't like. I think I should confess the following: As i almost never listen to them, they don't spring into my minf immediatly when i think of Russian composers. next time I'll think everything more through before making the poll. Now that we are talking about Russian composers, I did accomplish what i wanted to reach, so I can still be satisfied :)

Maybe I should take another example: Avernum. You pay $25 once and can use it always, without a limit of time. With Runescape, whenever you feel like playing, you'll have to pay $5 a month. in the end Runescape will probably cost more then Avernum, and still you can't play it for eternity.

In the end I indeed thought about why i actually called the poll Russian composers, because Its indeed more the ones of the Romantic period that are there.

You guys mentioned a lot of Russian composers, of which i all don't really like. Most of them have one piece i like, but in general i don't like their work.

Gershwin? I really hate his music. on the other hand, i like Bernstein (although his music can also get tiresom after a while).

And one last thing about Mahler: he's actually a Jew, but never mind that.

Yes, that's right, but why would you get a game you don't like? You would at least have tried the demo and see what you think of it. Then, when you decided you want to buy the game, you spend a sum of money to play the game for eternity, and not $60 for every year. That's like buying Flight Simulator three times. And also, getting a machine that will play your game isn't such a big problem too. i can play dark castle for Mac OS 6, on my Mac OS 9, with a simple emulator.

And there's another good example of what I dont like. At high levels it gets easier all the time to make money. No real challenge anymore. The only thing that would attract me is the equipment, but that all the good stuff is members-only. And no, I wont become a member. Too expensive. i can buy another good game which I pay once a bulk of money for but can use for as long as I want, instead of $5 every month, not enabling me to play it for eternity without it being an enormous expense. Compare this:

I buy Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 for $40 dolars to play it for as long as I want,

I buy a membership of $5 dollars a month, for which i pay $60 dollars a year and I can't even play it for eternity! That's a difference of $20 dollars, and about 70 years less (that's until i die) that i can play it.

Wagner is there for the simple reason that I love his music (The ride of the Walküre, Meistersinger of Nürnberg, Tannhauser, Götterdämerung....). The only thing with Wagner is the following thing: beautiful minutes, but boring hours (as some people said).

You could say Dvorak wil indeed win because of his 9th symphony. It was great, yes, espacially the fourth part. i must say I like Tschaikovsky's sixth symphony also very much, and not to forget Rachmaninov's first symphony, second movement! To just say that Dvorak wil win only because of the 9th symphony, I just find a little... I can't find the right words. If people here know enough about classical music, and especcially of the Russian Romantic period, they might think otherwise. Dvorak is not the only one who made beautiful peices of music.

EDIT: and one more thing, the fact that Mahler is not slavic, what the hell do i care! I love his music. (By the way, may i see where you got that information? My mother (a great fan of Mahler) Says otherwise, and a few internetsites I looked at).

I have mainly been mining and smithing, but I also tried fighting (I don't really like fighting), magic (Which is kinda fun, but it also gets tiering), I tried about everything, but it just bores me a little. Trading can be fun, but if nobody wants your stuff, that also gets irritating after a while. What's left to do? You have no real goal. I see now what the problem is with a game without a goal.

To be a bit more precise: Mahler was born in Czechoslovakia (If I remember correctly), but he lived a long time in Austria. This makes him of a Slavic nationality, and that's what i asked about: Russian/Slavic composers.

Which do you prefer? Personnaly I like Dvorak, mahler and Shostakovich.

You forgot the most important thing. Eat chicken noodles for breakfast and send your mom to buy a bottle of milk, after which you go to his or her house and punish him with the ultimate punishment: You throw eggs end rotten fruit against the windows (chickens are also good, they will break the windows)!
