quote:Strike the word significant and I agree with you. Not that part about MLK making a significant change, but that everyone should do so. And on MLK day I'm at work. Holidays have become a function of paid/unpaid with not much remembrance of the rationale. Forcing a government shutdown for a day doesn't strike me as an effective way to remember King's efforts to bring racial equality to the USA. I haven't thought much about an alternative though, except maybe that it should be one of a series of days set aside for people to do charity work if they so choose. But then again, that would be the gov't telling employers how to run their businesses. *this message sponsored by rosa parks - the other catalyst* -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Sure. I will be creating an interactive theatre that displays other scenarios as "films" by using author provided cutscenes as well as short bits to connect them together. 1 sentence. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Evil is a construct, not a boolean function or a bank account balance. Murder is considered a subset of the "societily labeled wrong" group of actions that take place. That is to say, society doesn't consider all murder to be evil. Some societies consider certain "murders" to be necessary components of a properly functioning society. Furthermore, the USA society was founded on moral principles and yet it also was founded to encourage bootstrapping through enrichment. The problem is, they are almost mutually dependent. I appreciate your devotion to making sure that the lowest income earners get the fair chance that is needed to make a successful life. I fear that some frustration is in your future, but don't let it get you down. Target the roadblocks to success, but not the success itself. *this message sponsored by the evanston national bank* -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Actually, it was more than TM last Wednesday, and the general idea was given a thumbs up at the meeting. See the chat log if you have questions. The chat I had privately with TM was more concerned with technical issues and making sure that the scenario was not some overwhelming monster of a thing. So, no worries, I'll be contacting other people as well for feedback and direction. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

When the murder and mayhem is complete, could you let us know how much got pruned? I use the search function in BoA Editor, and knowing how much is left would be helpful. That logic probably extends to other people and other forums. Thanks. edit - added a t and removed a word. typical editing. I love that argument and use it frequently, but I recognize the fallacy and try not to complain when it comes back to bite me. Of course, I'm refering to society needing to erase a wealth disparity because it was created by society. Umm. I'm pretty sure that "society" doesn't stand isolated from that which it creates, so there is little to guarantee society will remain without wealth disparity. It may, but why take that chance? A person can easily pick themselves up from nothing and make a load of cash. quote:This was good too, and when I was younger I thought along similar lines. It goes back to the thing Mom used to ask, "If Jimmy jumped off that cliff, would you follow him?" It turns out that every person has the ability to make their own choices, independent of influence from anyone else. The one person that doesn't make charitable donations is not a bad person. They just aren't. If you feel badly that they aren't donating to charity, or you feel that they should in fact donate to charity, then you need to step back a few feet and ask how it would feel to be in that persons shoes and have that kind of pressure. Our society is somewhat contingent on mutual respect, and more and more I see our freedom of choice removed by well meaning individuals. That creates homogenity, which in my view is bad for me and bad for society as a whole. But be how you want to be, I won't stand in opposition, as long as I can be left out of it. *this message sponsored by acme soapbox emporium - serving lefties only since 1903* -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

It turned out that her personal karma is so low that no action or inaction I took would have made her day any worse. 1. An employee decided to file a worker's compensation claim of dubious validity. 2. She messed up her time card and got paid less than she expected. 3. An intern decided, with his advisor's help, that he shouldn't be helping us. By the end, I was almost feeling sorry for her, so I left. *this message sponsored by salvador molly's* -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I'll attend sporadically. It's tough to get my attention when I'm not chained to the desk at work. Maybe if I start attempting to enter the room now, I'll figure it out in the next 11 hours. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

And all along I thought you were a good person Jewels. My master plan has involved the slow degredation of the florescent light fixtures. She's now down to one bulb, which flickers intermittently. I would have tried the computer thing, but I would have had to "fix" it. I think I'll just end up counting on her lack of enthusiasm and figure she'll give up on work at some point in the morning. And yes Thuryl, once this project is done I'll begin the search for a better job. *this message sponsored by westinghouse* -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Fresh out, but good idea. It would probably have to be a preamble to some fake supernatural happenings though. I imagine that LSD would not be that strange of a trip. From wikipedia, the source of all that is wholesome and righteous on the internet. quote:My question would be, is it unethical of me to use my bosses fear of this day against her? Or is it just wrong? Actually I have no problem with either of those things, so any suggestions on how to freak her out would be appreciated. Of course the ideal situation would be a complete mental breakdown, followed by years of shock therapy, but I suspect that would be considered overplaying one's hand. *this message sponsored by Aran's freaky php 'n' mysqueal powers* [ Thursday, January 12, 2006 22:30: Message edited by: Jumpin' Salmon ] -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

You realize it's not "hate." See, that would take effort, and you've already wasted my time by posting something that I've already seen, heard discussed, and put into my "automatically ignore" category. There should be a list somewhere of topics that aren't really topics. Discussion of utterly ridiculous and transparent phishing expeditions is on that list. Attempts to delist the listed topics will be met with ridicule and criticism. *this message sponsored by a festering mass of karma/title topics* -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

quote:This type of logic is very disturbing, as it essentially states that majority opinion is the correct opinion. I see immediate fault when extending that to, for instance, religion. Is it possible to use your logic to say Islam > Christianity > Buddhism ?? I've not found a definitive source on religion and census, but some countries such as England and Singapore do collect and publish such data. For England, Christianity > everything. Also, no sense in letting a festering Mac/PC debate go on without adding religion to the mix. After all, I already mentioned politicians... Edit - Ah hah! Although clearly not definitive, this place seems to clearly state that (by logic of the majority) Christianity is the superior religion. Now, how to integrate the fact that Islam is the fastest growing religion... *this message sponsored by kitchenaid* [ Thursday, January 12, 2006 11:27: Message edited by: Jumpin' Salmon ] -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

They are all creatures from different planes of existence (parallel dimensions). Demons come from Hell, making them spirits or undead. The efreet and rakshasa are from other planes, and would be the sentient (and presumably top of food chain) in their respective dimensions. So, label the entire group as extra-dimensional. Shouldn't vahnati be included in that group as well??? ;) -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |
