Although this might eventually result in mind control, I don't see it happening anytime soon. The sensory part of the brain is understood fairly well, but thoughts, beliefs, memories, etc. are much less understood. And although controlling people by simply using the device to control the movement center of the brain might be possible, it would be pretty obvious that they were being controlled, as the device is probably pretty big and has to be right next to the person's head. There are probably other good uses besides entertainment though, for instance it could let blind people see without needing surgery like other methods used to make the blind see. -------------------- Important Information about Stuff Posts: 258 | Registered: Wednesday, March 9 2005 08:00 |

i found this at dailygadget.com Sony Patents "real" Matrix Sony has patented a way for transmitting data directly into the brain, with the goal of enabling a person to see movies and play video games in which they smell, taste and perhaps even feel things. There are two patents that have been filed, one in 2000 and another in 2003 and can be viewed below. In Sony's patent, the technique would be entirely non-invasive - it would not use brain implants or other surgery to manipulate the brain. The patent has few details, describing only a device that would fire pulses of acoustical energy at the head to modify the firing patterns of neurons in targeted parts of the brain. The patent can be read here web page There are actually two patents, but since they are both about the same, I included only one link. The original article is here. http://www.dailygadget.com/forums/showthread.php?p=31384#post31384 [ Friday, April 08, 2005 17:44: Message edited by: EviL_TiM ] -------------------- Important Information about Stuff Posts: 258 | Registered: Wednesday, March 9 2005 08:00 |

Exile 1 was the first game from here I played. I could be mistaken, since it was a long time ago (I was under seven) I think I first played it at the house of someone from my church. I blame the extreme devotion to political parties that is so common in the USA. If political parties weren't so big maybe people would vote according to the quality of the presidential candidate instead of according to thier political party. -------------------- Important Information about Stuff Posts: 258 | Registered: Wednesday, March 9 2005 08:00 |

quote:If you have plenty of time WoW is probably good. I could probably only play it in the summer because I have tons of free time then and I make more money then also. It looks pretty cool, but if you have a Mac, beware, because at the apple website's chatboard there are many people complaining that WoW made there computer crash and when they restarted it thier computer wouldn't recognize thier hard drive. Some screenshots of the game are here http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/screenshots/screenshot.aspx?ImageIndex=191&Set=0 and you can tell just by these that its a really good game. The worst winter is one that's exactly like summer except all the grass is dead, it's freezing cold, and the wind is practically knocking you over. it's been like that where I live at winter for the last couple years. -------------------- Important Information about Stuff Posts: 258 | Registered: Wednesday, March 9 2005 08:00 |

You're right, I shouldn't call it stupid without actually trying it first, however I would like to point out that I know more about it than that cartoon(I asked my dad about it before and in my opinion the best way to find out someting besides trying it is to ask someone who has). And I shouldn't be criticizing spending hours on RPGs- i've actually considered buying World of Warcraft. I'd also like to say I have nothing against strategy games or old computer games, I've been playing rogue since I was five (on computer and later on palm pilot) and I play Warcraft 3 all the time. -------------------- Important Information about Stuff Posts: 258 | Registered: Wednesday, March 9 2005 08:00 |

i heard somewhere that other universes might exist in the same space, on a different wavelength or something, and if this was true, it would not contradict Stephen Hawking's theories. however, I probably heard this in a science fiction book or something like that, so wether or not this has any chance of bieng true or any scientific evidence behind it is uncertain. -------------------- Important Information about Stuff Posts: 258 | Registered: Wednesday, March 9 2005 08:00 |

Thanks everybody. Whats scary is that I've actually played some of these games recently- there are versions of rogue and Ultima 1, 2, & 3 for Palm OS. I agree, Dungeons and Dragons does look somewhat stupid, and although it's probably somewhat fun I doubt it's anywhere as fun as computer RPGs. Many of the early RPG's you mentioned are technically strategy, but I suppose that back then that was the closest they got to RPG. -------------------- Important Information about Stuff Posts: 258 | Registered: Wednesday, March 9 2005 08:00 |

Giving away data(music, software, ebooks, etc) shouldn't be illegal, after all, those things produce money in other ways, besides, once you buy it it should be yours to do with as you wish, within reason. Just look at concerts, movies in movie theaters, and paper books-the people who make these make larrge amounts of money from them. But by that logic, software shouldn't be pirated because it has no other source of income. however, everybody shouldn't start pirating data, or eventually noone will make it except those who can afford to do so for free, and we'd all have to settle for data that people did in they're spare time instead of data that people had a lot of time to perfect. -------------------- Important Information about Stuff Posts: 258 | Registered: Wednesday, March 9 2005 08:00 |

My full name is mostly boring. Anthony Lafayette Brown. However my middle name is kind of wierd because I'm not the least bit French, yet the middle name is often given to people in my family for reasons no one's entirely sure about, except that they know it's after the Marquis de Lafayette. -------------------- Important Information about Stuff Posts: 258 | Registered: Wednesday, March 9 2005 08:00 |
