Wait, you actually play as a rebel and not just "not a Shaper"?

And you aren't even necessarily a human?

I heartily approve. :) Props for messing with the formula.

EDIT: I also approve of Khoth's suggestion above me.

Fighter: Good combat, okay magic, lousy shaping.
Magician: Good magic, okay shaping, lousy combat.
Creation Master (seems awkward to call them Shapers when they're fighting against the Shapers): Good Shaping, okay combat, lousy magic.

Works for me. Now, if we can have utility (as opposed to combat) creations, my wish list is close to complete.

1 for 2 so far. For me, that's good.

I hereby change my predictions to England beating Portugal and then going down to Spain.

Two matches a day, single elimination, top team in one group plays second seed in another group.

Day 1 - Germany v Sweden (2-0)

Day 2 - England v Ecuador
........Portugal v Dutch
Day 3 - Italia v Australia
........Suise v Ukraine
Day 4 - Brasil v Ghana
........Espana v France

The next stage pits the survivors of each day against each other (ie. perhaps Germany v Argentina), and then the Day 1 survivor versus the Day 2 survivor. Excepting the Dutch, the first eight teams look tough. The second eight, not so much. I'll change my prediction to Argentina beats Italia 3-1.

Stage 3 Matchups (Games begin 6/30/06)
Day 1 - Germany v Argentina
:)

Too late to tip those first matches, but my predictions for the round of 16 are:

Ecuador to defeat England
Portugal over Netherlands
Australia will beat Italy (of course :D )
Ukraine will be too good for the Swiss
Brazil will (unfortunately) end the competition for Ghana. I'll be happy if I'm wrong, though!
Spain will overwhelm the lackluster French side.

And just for fun, the Quarterfinals results if all goes to plan:

Germany to edge out Argentina in a beauty.
Australia will take down Ukraine. ( :D )
Portugal to put Ecuador in their place.
Spain to give the underperforming Brazil a rude shock.

And for the semifinals:

Germany will bring Australia's journey to an end ( :( )
Spain to knock out their Portugese neighbours.

Meaning Germany vs Spain in the Final, with the home team winning. And for third place, Australia misses out to Portugal. ( :( )

Let's see if I get a single one of those predictions right. :P

Fair enough, and I understand the "close to home" bit as well. So I pose the question. How does this decision affect you personally? I mean, my neighbor could have a habit of eating dog crap, but as long as he isn't in my yard following my dog, I've got no problem with what he is doing. But that is me. Someone else may want the guy to stop doing what he loves.

Is this an issue (in Canberra) solely about the distinction between marriage and civil union? Also, please give some background. It is incredibly difficult to parse positions within and without government. Candidates (and seated politicians) change positions regularly, and it would be pertinent to be informed as to how long the various parties have held the positions.

:)

1) It doesn't really affect me, except as far as a mismatch between my values and the values of the society I live in goes.

2) Some background: Federally, the Liberal/National Party coalition (centre-right) is currently in government. However, in the ACT, the Labour party is in power. Labour is always further to the left than the coalition, but the ACT Labour party are very much so.

A while back, the Federal Government passed the Marriage Act, defining marriage as being between a man and a woman. I'm not sure exactly what the technical reason was for the law being struck down, but it could have been for legislating on marriage (which states and territories aren't allowed to do) or for being in conflict with Federal law. Either case requires the law to have legalised same-sex marriage, which the Federal government says it did.

The question of whether it did or not is one of the two that's been choking up talk radio. The ACT government have been angrily pointing to the part of the act where it says "A Civil Union is not the same as a marriage", while the federal government have pointed to the fact that the only actual difference is the name, comparing it to something that looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and waddles like a duck but has a sign around its neck saying "This is not a duck".

The other issue that's been debated is if the Federal Government is infringing on the territory's right to self-govern. I find this one a little amusing, since the ACT government is really just a glorified city council, but still. This one is interesting, because it's the reason for Senator Gary Humphries crossing the floor and voting against the Federal government - he's actually personally opposed to civil unions. And the reason why he's staunchly defended the ACT's right to self-govern? Well, it may have something to do with the fact that he used to be the ACT Chief Minister. Where it gets really interesting, though, is that for a while leading up to the vote, he wouldn't say whether he was going to cross the floor or merely abstain. Inside rumours I've heard suggest that he was waiting to see whether his vote would change the result - that is, he wanted to publically condemn the government's actions, but also didn't actually want to stop. Basically, putting on a show for the voters. Gotta love politics.

But I think the most important detail is the alternative bill that the ACT opposition put forward was for a relationship register that (if I have got my facts straight) would function more or less as we seem to have all agreed would be the best way - that is, applying the legal benefits of marriage to anyone living in a domestic partnership, regardless of the nature of that relationship. The ACT government is now considering whether to pursue this arrangement in place of the defunct Civil Unions act.

It looks like a lot of folks had fun though, even though non-Australians have a very hard time absorbing enough Australian politics to understand the ramifications of the decision.

You were asking because it was Australian politics, right? I would hate to think that you were putting forward another religiously motivated debate thread. Those get old, fast.

Well, it was a bit closer to home than just being Australian politics. The ACT = Canberra. This law would have applied specifically and exclusively to the city I live in. I was hoping to discuss the specific case more than gay marriage in general, but hey.

Personally? Because I consider marriage to be something holy, and I consider homosexuality to be something unholy, and I consider combining the two to be a desecration of the former.

My political opinions on the matter are fairly similar to yours, in fact. I think the government should keep its hands well away from marriage in any form. In terms of tax benefits or other legal benefits, they should apply to anyone living together in a domestic partnership, regardless of what their relationship is - carer and dependent, brother and sister, sexual partners, whatever.

EDIT: Damn. I'm slow.

I really don't see the point of disallowing it. The pair love each other, so why should it not be official?

I'm not for same-sex marriage. A proper marriage, IMO, would be against the tradition that marriage was built around.

As above, the reason Howard and Co. quashed it was because they saw it as being same-sex marriage under another name.

This is slightly old news, but who cares. From the ABC:

quote:
The Federal Government has gained the support of a Family First Senator to successfully fight off a challenge to its decision to quash ACT laws for same-sex civil unions.

The Opposition and minor parties were challenging the Government's decision to disallow the ACT civil unions law.

Liberal Senator Gary Humphries, a former chief minister of the ACT, crossed the floor and supported the challenge.

"I'm not convinced that there was no alternative to disallowance," Senator Humphries said.

But despite Senator Humphries' move, the motion was defeated because Family First Senator Steve Fielding voted with the Government.

Discuss. I've been following this story fairly closely, so I can probably answer any questions.

Do you hate those morons who resort to name-calling? Would you like to tell us what Stephen Hawking had to say about appeals to authority? Speak your mind here!

Personally, slippery slope arguments get on my nerves because they're the first symptom of sloppy thinking. If you let people get away with them, they inevitably get lazier in their debating and before you know it they're pulling out the Nazi references.

Australia goes down 2-0 to Brazil. In my opinion, the contest was a lot tighter than the scoreline would suggest. The Australian team were finding holes in Brazil's defense, they just couldn't capitalise.

On their performances so far, I'm predicting that Australia will get through to the Quarterfinals. :)

Blades of Exile rules, hard. If you can handle the 2d engine, get it.

Blades of Avernum is made on the same principle as BoE, but lacks the range, depth, and quality of scenarios. Still a decent buy, especially if you're interested in trying your hand at scenario design but can't hack the Exile engine.

Watching the news last night was crazy. It was nearly impossible to find anything that wasn't "YEAHHHH WE BEAT THE JAPS WOO WOO WOO!". And that was after hearing about it all day.

Sure, it was an awesome win (bad referee decision gives the Japanese an early lead, then in the last 8 minutes Australia come from behind to kick 3 goals), but man, this country seems to have gone from being completely apathetic about soccer to being soccer mad almost overnight. I can't imagine what the news oversaturation is going to be like if by some miracle we beat Brazil.
