Doing it to Rentar-Ihrno takes a long time. :D Anyway, if you really need someone back, just use the Editor. It can return all PCs. Posts: 262 | Registered: Thursday, November 11 2004 08:00 |

I was referring to C++ more than anything. That sort of code doesn't fly in C++ (or, if it does, me and two C++ references can't decipher it; not that that's necessarily saying much), unless you make the variable public, which is self-defeating. In some cases, a modicum of OO makes sense. For graphics and such (especially with DirectX), it doesn't make sense not to use classes. My main issue with classes is protection and inheritance. I understand the theories just fine, but I really dislike protection. I don't believe that variables that can affect other parts of the program (for example, a player's stats in a game) should be locked down and unable to be reached without functions. To me, set_health(get_health + 25); is excessive. The alternative is a modify_health routine, continuing with the example, which I feel is awkward. player.health += 25 makes more sense to me. It's C, but using a lot of C++ syntax and coding. Like what's been already said, he uses classes, but none of their extra features. I can't find fault in that--I do the same--but the problem is that his code is so friggin' ugly. Commenting and Jeff seem to be at odds through some of his editor code. These are the reasons we need a Lua-based script engine--so we can write our own functions. Anyone else doubt that JV would ever even entertain this idea? Posts: 262 | Registered: Thursday, November 11 2004 08:00 |

The date is an unsigned char value, I think, so any more than 512 would roll it back to 0. Posts: 262 | Registered: Thursday, November 11 2004 08:00 |

This is a hard question. I'm going to have to go with E1 (but that's because I've been playing A1, in part). E2/A2 is simply too sprawling, and, unlike some of the other BoE/BoA people, I like a game that involves more smashing than wandering around and oohing and aahing at special nodes. As for E3/A3--no. The game is very fun, but the storyline is pure drek, for reasons Kel explained above. Posts: 262 | Registered: Thursday, November 11 2004 08:00 |

In Exile, if you kill him, it's game over, no matter how he dies. You can't even get that far in Exile/Avernum II, and I haven't tried yet in A1. Posts: 262 | Registered: Thursday, November 11 2004 08:00 |

You'll soon find that most here hate ZKR (I think it's fine, but that's probably because I enjoy a good long dungeon slog and care less about story) and love ASR--or, in some cases, dislike it 'cause of JV's politics. Anyway, Kel's link is good for special skills. I *think* there's another way to get through the shrooms in ZKR, but I'm not 100% sure, and I think that room in DwtD is impassable. A3 uses a different game engine. It also runs a good deal slower on Windows. :/ A2 runs at a steady pace on my (very ancient) Compaq Presario 1230. A3 takes about ten seconds for the blood-spatter animation to play when you hit someone. Posts: 262 | Registered: Thursday, November 11 2004 08:00 |
