I think I flubbed up this time by not taking the ring to What's-His-Name (Derenten Freehold) before talking to Litalia after going to Quessa. So, I've got the ring of puresteel in special items but can't get the drakon to take it (he says he needs it, but the dialog point about 'here, I've got one' won't come up. (I have, though, already delivered the other one to him.) What do I need to do to get that dialog point so I can clear the quest? Thanks! Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

I'll go way out on a limb ... and recommend PlayByWeb for some RPGs. Depending on just what you're interested in--only catch is that it's pretty much all text (you supply your character's)--there's bound to be a game or two of interest. Personally, I like the old OD&D or AD&D (1st or 2nd ed), but I have friends trying to get me into some new systems (Aberrant, GURPS) ... Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Well, I don't think it'd be *too* burdensome to have a little pop-up thing every time you touch a canister--not much different than every time you look into a container of whatever sort to see if there's anything good in there. So instead of the auto-touch=use, it'd be a little window with three choices: use, smash, change mind. Change mind would allow you to back out of touching it without either effect. Use would be just like it is now, while smash would result in the changed image (broken canister) and a little 'you gained experience' message. But yeah, I think if you wanted your character to be a Trakovite or even a very pro-Shaper (orthodox) character, smashing canisters instead of using them should be a choice. And it would underscore the whole canister=easy way vs. 'gain skills the hard way' ethos, even if the reward for canister smashing was not xp (which is probably easiest to code--and I'd make it a flat number so that it's still worthwhile at high levels) but say 2 skill points (not enough necessarily to improve a skill, but add enough of them, and you're getting somewhere). One interesting thing for me--if you could do something other than use canisters... for example, destroy them for xp (and maybe even something of a minor quest, like 'destroy # canisters for [insert item]'). Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Thanks! That did the trick (and I've now finished the scenario). So, any clue why those spells didn't show, even though I did find them and get a message they'd been learned? Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

So--anyone have a suggestion on how to work around that unhandled exception error when it takes place right after the fight when Legare buys the farm? It gets to the point at which the party is supposed to be transported back to camp & then crashes w/ the unhandled exception. I'm way too far to start over ... On an unrelated point ... for some reason, some of those special spells are not showing up in my special spell books. Specifically: filth, capture soul, recall soul, quickfire, and major haste. (All the others are dutifully showing up in their appropriate spellbooks.) Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Hurrah! Now--for a plot that doesn't squeeze you along like toothpaste in a tube? I didn't mind the limits on where to go/what to do in Exile/Avernum 2's first chapters, but from the return to the ToM on, it was very open. The first game was completely open (except for the whole 'go here too soon, you get whomped' aspect), and there was a sense of wide-openness in game three, even if there were certain lines that had to be drawn straight. A4, OTOH, felt so constrained 'do not deviate from plot, straight lines only'. Being more free to wander around in squiggly lines w/o getting one's nose whacked with a paper for being a bad puppy (so to speak) ... that's probably my top wish. Another one who had a CD full of shareware (good, bad, awful!, excellent, the whole gamut). Fortunately, it allowed you to sort games by type (card, board, RPG, etc.), and I found & installed the three Exile games, played to the shareware barrier & registered. Grah-Hoth isn't in that shattered fort--he's in a bottle (until you let him go) beyond Skarragoth (in the Abyss, in the general vicinity of Erika's). As far as the things that Sulfras wants--one is in Spire, the other is in the Tower of Magi. Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

It says that my level of enchantment isn't enough to affect those doors ... I'm apparently missing the key (I think it belongs to the undead thing--is there a way to keep it from vanishing when killed?) Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

I'm in the tower where I need to get the new boat, and I've been pretty much everywhere on the first floor & the second floor, except for one room on second floor that the doors were first guarded by those pink blobby things. I cannot get those doors open. I've been to the third floor & all the way around and there's a big area in the middle I can't get to (presumably accessed by the area on floor 2 I can't get to, if 'far sight' told me correctly). How do I get past this? Since it tracks how many scenarios you've been in/beaten, I really don't want to shell out now, but I'm stuck and frustrated. I think that, speaking for myself, I enjoy those BoE scenarios that I do like because of the story, not the graphics. Plus I like the 6 person party (more places to carry stuff). In addition, I'm a semi-Luddite at heart. ;) Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

If you're really strapped for cash, the best thing to do is run over to eastern Valorim & keep running merchant runs over there (clothes and herbs). Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

The only way I know of to be *sure* your site is viewed w/ the unique font is to turn your text into .gif files (or some other graphic form, but I recall hearing that gifs were the best for text-like graphics). Otherwise, you are dependent upon the page-visitor having the font in question installed (or be willing to install it), and unless you're using one of the fairly standard (arial, helvetica, verdana, comic sans, times new roman), odds start going against you. It strikes me strange--we read Harry Potter (well, my oldest son who is 9-1/2 and I) here, and I've gotten into numerous discussions w/ people who think that the novels are antithetical to Christianity because there's "witchcraft" in there. Almost universally, they have not read so much as one of the novels, and are basing their opinion on second- and third-hand information in articles which are so misleading that I would call the articles lies. As an example, one article claims that the Harry Potter novel supports a world view in which "there is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too weak to see it," and attempt to bolster that claim by giving a page citation. What they fail to do--thereby lying by omission--is note that those words were in the mouth of a villain (who ends up defeated a few pages later). The magic in Harry Potter is clearly a literary device within the tale which is primarily a coming-of-age story. It is also quite clearly unrelated to anything like real-world Wiccan practice, and is nothing more than an alternative science (note that the wizarding characters describe things such as electricity and telephones as "Muggle substitutes" for magic). I find the books quite enjoyable and well-written. We also aren't going in for much of the hype--we have copies of all 5 books (so far), the 2 movies on video, and my oldest son has most of the Lego sets as well as a computer game. For our copy of the last book, we didn't go to the bookstore and get into the midnight madness parties--it was pre-ordered from Barnes & Noble and arrived on Saturday via the FedEx guy. Invest in a good spam-killing product (I've used SpamKiller almost the entire time I've been on-line--took me about 3 months on-line to find it). Also, check headers and such, as it is very likely that you're dealing with a spoofed address. Of course, you could always forward (headers intact) the email to the opposing political party, and see what kind of hay they make out of it. I think it's the temperature issue that hampers slith/other races co-existence. Both the nephilim and humans are warm-blooded, and probably happy at close to the same temp, while the sliths need a lot more warmth. The sliths definitely have a more civilized feel to them, and more highly developed rituals (look at the "touch three pools to pass", for example). The nephilim, on the other hand, seem to have exemplified the whole "like herding cats" notion. Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

The subject was brought up before, and I still have to stand by my original opinion: The obvious casting choice for Erika Redmark would be Anjelica Huston. Posts: 145 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |
