quote:Seconded. There's no reason for aranea to cast the same spells as people... and as Lenar said, über-powerful mages/priests should have different spells to which mere adventurers can't devote enough time to learn. A4 had some good examples of this, like Nociduas' infamous demon-summoning (finally, good summoning!) and even the fear wand on the leader of the Loyalists (despite how much of a cop-out it was). And let's not forget X's anvil spell. :P -------------------- Thuryl: "Runescape: for people who are too stupid to save their games." Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. *sigh*... It seems that I arrived in the community one series too late. This is really pretty depressing. I mean, 1 and 2 are uplifting to a degree. 3 is sad, but manageable. 4 is downright depressing. And I also can't quite believe that BoA didn't sell well. Perhaps at some point in the future Jeff could collect the cream of the BoA crop and sell them on CD... didn't something similar happen with BoE? I mean, it'd give a much better impression of the game itself. Then again, I suppose there'd be the issue of whether or not to compensate the designers... Oh well. If A4 kept the company alive, then huzzah. Here's to A5! EDIT: I just wish there was some way to stay more involved with the canon, I guess... designing for BoA really made it feel like there was more of a community surrounding the Avernum games. That said, I won't stop designing. Meh, I guess I'll just have to apply to help betatest. Top priority in my mind is bugs. I doubt he'll want to try and make new scenarios, given that he's intent on continuing Avernum and Geneforge. But yeah... bug fixes would be wonderful. -------------------- Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. I hate undead. I really, really, really, really hate undead. With a passion. To all that was said: Yay! I look forward to the continued speculation, and I'm glad to see that Jeff is excited about making it. That means it'll get finished that much faster. quote:I'm curious about this as well. -------------------- Thuryl: "Runescape: for people who are too stupid to save their games." I'd honestly rather see JV fix BoA first... (waits for laughter to stop) Right... I'd kind of like to see elevation come back. And it might benefit the game to break out of the same section of Avernum used in 1, 2, and 4... particularly after how 4's engine change crunched most of it down. I'd also like to see an explanation for how Fort Ganrick, Grindstone, Fort Monastery, and their ilk keep messing up the continuity of the game. :P -------------------- Thuryl: "Runescape: for people who are too stupid to save their games." Well, it depends on what kind of story you're shooting for. For something fairly linear, like DoK was, I like to just work on towns in the order that they appear in the plot. EoR was a bit different for me, because I knew the plot was going to be a bit twisty. In that, I just kept flipping between scripts as they were called upon in the plot, occasionally going back to ones I'd believed to be finished to work on a new element of the plot. However, for something like what I'm working on now, I don't have a plot yet. So I'm making skeletons of all the outdoors and friendly towns first, and worrying about what happens later. I don't recommend this... I have no idea where I'm going with it yet. If nothing else, it'll look cool, and then I could give it to someone else to do something with. -------------------- Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. I hate undead. First off, it looks fairly good so far, Nemesis. I look forward to beta-testing it, though I could probably suggest a few things about terrain that I noticed in the screenshots. Nioca, no need for the condescending attitude... not sure if you meant it that way, but that's what I saw. Either way, the sparkles would be fairly easy. You'd just have to make a creature script identical to basicnpc, just putting a put_sparkles_on_char(ME, which_sfx, num_sparkles) in the start_state. Then, you'd probably want to add a counter, just so that the sparkles every turn didn't get distracting. Hm... just so you know, the title on your page isn't working correctly... I see <FONT FACE> tags in it. -------------------- Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. I hate undead. I really, really, really, really hate undead. With a passion. Okay, here's what you do, because I can't remember and it seems like you're being lazy: -In each scenario folder, there will be a text file that ends in data.txt. -Open the file, and search for "Crystal Wand" -Repeat until you find it. -------------------- Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. Um... I have a slight objection. TM's rakshasi are the current force for eliminating dead factions, and it's much easier to use what we've already got on the table instead of introducing yet another alien invader. That, and the Parasites feel even farther from canon than TM's conception of rakshasi, and at least they have a sort of momentum behind them. Besides, we can't just forget about the rakshasi. -------------------- Thuryl: "Runescape: for people who are too stupid to save their games." Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. I am also willing to continue, though it will require a bit of conferring with Infernal and TM, since a lot of our plotlines overlapped... For future Out of Context posts, please see this thread, which was set aside to keep this one from getting needlessly cluttered, just like it is now. :D Aran-Edit: Please also check in the OOC before making any new IC posts here or (heavens beware) entering with a new faction.
