I suppose I just live for the human element in music, imperfections and all- but as long as humans are still playing the instruments, that can still be found, to some degree. You're certainly right that the human voice generally lacks the sheer range and precision of a man-made instrument. Such things matter more to some than to others. Matter of taste, I guess, as in so many other cases. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. Reasoning is destroyed when the mind is bewildered. Alec has given me quite a few ideas with this topical music thread. Just to float an idea out- would anyone be interested in a "Greatest Beatles song" thread or something of the kind? Thinking on it a bit, "Favorite Rock Band" might make for a more interesting and inclusive topic. But anyway, feedback would be useful. My thanks to the SW electorate, and to my fellow candidates. I would have liked to see Alec in the top three, but I respect the wishes of those that have transferred votes to me and will accept all of the votes I have received. As things are (barring fluctuations in the next few days) it appears that the contest will take place between myself, Aran and Thuryl. They are more than worthy competition, and I look forward eagerly to the next phase of the elections. I would ordinarily recommend boozing with pals, but since you've already decided against it, I won't push the issue. It's worthwhile to take your time with drinking and such activities; I'll be the first to tell you that succumbing to peer pressure when you're not really ready to make the plunge is a bad idea. You'll doubtless try alcohol at some point, probably in college, but there's no need to think about that now. Just get together with a few friends and have a nice chill time. The webmaster of the redwall.org website, David Lindsay, recommends reading the books in the order they were published, not in their chronological order. Oftentimes reading the books in chronological order can ruin secrets from books one hasn't read, which never really happens when one reads them in the order in which they were published. I endorse Lindsay's suggestion, although the order in which one reads the books is not all that important. I used to be really big on the Redwall books. My favorite is almost certainly Mossflower. Other great ones include Martin The Warrior, Salamandastron, and the Bellmaker. Some of the newer ones are good as well, but since the plots begin to get quite repetitive after a while, a reader would be better off starting with the earlier, more authentic tales. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. As for the question of who's responsible, it's quite likely that the group that has claimed responsibility did really carry out the bombings. However, I'm of the opinion that the attack was planned and orchestrated by the Al Qaeda organization. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. I've voluntarily played three or four hours of Homeland straight before, and you might be surprised to learn that I required no knife to my throat or gun barrel to my back to do so. Of course, I am in possession of unnaturally high level of patience and tolerance for our species. At any rate, I've got quite the iron-clad stomach, and I doubt that even the most vicious variety of food poisoning could lay me low. So I suppose I'd go for both, possibly at the same time. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. Very few classical music pieces appeal to me, but "Mars" is in the distinct minority. This is quite the uninformed opinion, as I don't believe I've heard any other elements of the suite, with the exception of "Jupiter," which I found to be bright and pleasant but certainly not as memorable as "Mars." Perhaps I'll someday get around to listening to a few of the others, but it's unlikely. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. quote:After a fruitless search through the basement, I'm left to conclude that my old book of Russian fairytales has, in one way or another, met its doom. We've donated more than a few unwanted books to book sales over the years, and that's probably what happened to this one. I'm afraid that I can't remember the names of any of the tales I read back then, unfortunately. I'm unsure as to the popularity of Russian books in India. I wasn't born there, and I've only been there once in my life. However, my parents were born in India, and perhaps that accounts for their acquisition of the book for me. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. You're not alone- UA's got much the same attitude with respect to vocals. I fully understand that people have vastly different tastes, but the human voice is an instrument of more versatility than almost any other. Do you really detest all forms of vocals, no matter the style, range, and pitch of the singer? And what is your opinion with regard to non-lyrical vocals? Just curious, is all. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. Reasoning is destroyed when the mind is bewildered. quote:You know, when I was young my parents bought me a collection of Russian fairytales translated into English. And many of them were quite grim and dark, often dealing heavily with such concepts as jealousy, lust, and greed. These passions would lead characters to commit murders and other acts that were explicitly described. Certainly not the sort of thing a child ought to read, but my parents must not have been aware of the mature content. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. I'm not big on BST either, I just felt like I needed a third example. However, Chicago's work in the early seventies is absolutely golden, and I've never really heard horns used to better effect. I'm not big on ska, but I have heard bands like Reel Big Fish utilize horns fairly effectively. Damn, there are more than a few people who only listen to classical music. I used to fancy that Aran was the only one. :P The closest I ever get to classical music is listening to progressive rock bands that utilized orchestration heavily, like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Instrumental music just doesn't grab me, for whatever reason. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. I've heard oboe-piano and oboe-flute duets, and both combinations sounded quite nice. Not really my favorite type of sound, though, and classical music isn't quite my thing anyway. Thralni, Chicago isn't the only band that has utilized horns, including trombone, extensively. Horn-powered rock was especially popular in the seventies, with bands like Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Blood, Sweat & Tears gaining great commercial and critical success. As I thoroughly enjoy horns but dislike the improvisational jamming replete in jazz, such bands are often my only means of obtaining a much-needed horns fix. And as I stated earlier, David, that condition only lasted for a few weeks. As soon as I gave up that trumpet, I was right as rain. :P -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. Like many, many others, I joined jus to get a few answers regarding an SW game I was playing at the time. In my case the game was GF2, and at first I just asked a few questions and then stayed away for a bit. However, curiosity soon drew me over to General, at which point I became aware of the complexity of relationships and personalities around here. I was intrigued, and also thoroughly confused, and as I don't enjoy being confused I endeavored to figure everything out. This amounted to reading through several old General threads, focusing especially on flame wars and other telling topics. After completing my research, I began participating actively in General. With a lot of my early posts, I would drop a few of the names or a bit of the information I had previously gleaned, and soon there was quite a bit of speculation going on within the community as to my identity. As most would come to accept, though, I was merely a highly observant, fast-learning new member. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. World's Fastest Ferret Warhol, owned by Jacqui Adams of Blythe in the U.K., set a world record for speed at the 1999 North of England Ferret Racing Championships on July 11, 1999. Warhol ran a distance of 10 m (32 ft) in 12.59 seconds. When asked for comment, Adams recommended ferrets for anyone suffering from loneliness. quote:Wow. I just realized the unfortunate phrasing here. At least I got to it before anyone else pointed it out. :P Although I haven't done much of anything musical since I stopped taking harmonium lessons and dropped out of choir (back in high school, in both cases) the majority of my friends are still musicians, of varying degrees of seriousness. I've got two trombonists and an oboist among my pals, and quite a few other instruments as well. An oboe can be quite pleasant in an orchestra setting, but it doesn't really mesh well with rock and roll. The trombone, on the other hand, can easily find its place in rock music. Back in fifth grade I attempted to learn how to play the trumpet. I had limited success, but being a small, weak kid, I couldn't really manage to hold the instrument level for any length of time. It would slowly drop to my lap, at which point I would be forced to painstakingly raise it back up. After a few weeks of this, I gave up the trumpet, and shortly began taking harmonium lessons. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion.
