quote:Well, Richard Adams did write a follow-up novel, although it was little more than a collection of rabbit lore storytales told by various members of the rabbit warren that were protagonists of the first book. It's called Tales From Watership Down, and it's pretty good. Certainly doesn't hold a candle to the original, though, as it's disjointed and lacks a strong central premise. While I'm discussing Adams, has anyone here ever read one of his other novels? I've been attempting to tackle Shardik for some time now, but it's so dense and rambling that I can't manage to focus on it. It seems like it might be really fascinating, though, if you can get over the fact that it has nothing at all to do with rabbits. There's also another Adams book that does deal with anthropomorphic animals- Plague Dogs, which apparently concerns the plight of a couple stray dogs. I've never read any of this one. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. Reasoning is destroyed when the mind is bewildered. That'd be Slagar The Cruel, the fox villain from Mattimeo. Good with a bolas, but rather cowardly as well. That's somewhat of a failing in Jacques' books- every villain always seems to be quite cunning and resourceful until he comes face to face with the hero, at which point he inexplicably turns into a cringing ninny. You're quite right. The modern comedies just don't seem to do too much for me. I'd say "Get Smart" is my favorite comedy program ever, and shows like "Bewitched" and "The Jeffersons" aren't far behind. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. All of this was done only with script modifications. I didn't touch the graphics file. First I changed the scripts to allow Hoge, Litalia, and another shaper to join my party, and then I messed with the color tints a bit until I got the desired result. Finally, I changed their names to the appropriate ones (although that was just for my sake, since it didn't show up in the screenshot). -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. quote:Nothing wrong with that, just a matter of taste. There is a chance you have been exposed to the wrong material for your tastes, though. The Beatles were quite experimental and stylistically varied, and there's usually something for almost anyone. Have you only ever heard the popular hits, or have you been exposed to lesser-known album tracks, as well? I, for one, find some of the best-known Beatles hits to be rather a bore (e.g. Let It Be, Get Back, The Long And Winding Road) and absolutely adore a lot of really obscure tracks. Here's an open invitation to anyone interested- if you're having difficulty finding a Beatles song that you like, just make a post discussing your general tastes in music. I'll go ahead and provide you with some recommendations along the lines of your tastes, and perhaps you can give those a try! -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. Of course you're quite welcome to your opinion, TM, but I find it odd that you elevate "Rocky Raccoon" to the status as a top-three Beatles song. It's a novelty joke tune that I found none too memorable, and yet you find it more impressive than so many other great songs? I'd be interested in hearing your rationale for the choice. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. "Yellow Submarine" is indeed a great movie. Easily one of my favorite movies, and certainly my favorite animated film. As you're aware, ADoS, Harrison composed several of the songs from his first album (All Things Must Pass) during his later years with the Beatles. Many of the songs were rejected by the other Beatles for inclusion in Beatles records. George, often treated like a junior member of the band (he was the youngest) was usually only allowed one or two songs per record. As such, by the time he was set to release a solo album he had enough tunes laid by to make it a double album. I know "Art of Dying" was a Beatles reject, and I wouldn't be surprised if "All Things Must Pass" was as well. There's even a Beatles reject tune in a later Harrison album. Check out "Not Guilty" from the album George Harrison. It's got quite a different sound than the Beatles version on Anthology 3, but it's a good one. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. It's a good list. Just FYI, though, "Imagine" is a John Lennon solo tune, and "All Things Must Pass" is a George Harrison solo tune. A lot of people will lump the ex-Beatles' solo careers up with their Beatles output, though, so it's no major blunder. EDIT: This was in response to Dolphin's list. In the vein of "Favorite Planets Movement"- another topical music thread! This one concerns the band that many fans (including myself) often claim is the best in history. All of the records from their peak period in the mid- to late-sixties are considered by critics to be required listening for those more than casually interested in classic pop/rock. So, in this thread, I ask everyone familiar with the Beatles in any capacity to list his/her five favorite songs by the band. If one is unable to create a top-five list due to underexposure to the band, he can list fewer than five. My list: 1. "Strawberry Fields Forever"- from the Magical Mystery Tour album 2. "She Said She Said"- from Revolver 3. "In My Life"- from Rubber Soul 4. "Sexy Sadie"- from the White Album 5. "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds- from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band I look forward to seeing the lists of others! -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. quote:Exactly. Far too many casual pop/rock listeners assume that the best of the Beatles is to be found on a single disc like "1," whereas quite the opposite is true. Practically every Beatles record is a greatest hits collection, and I'd appreciate it if more listeners were aware of that. Perhaps I'll make it a "list your top 5" thread, so as to get more song names out there. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. A3 is the only one of the three that I've played through. It appears I've been missing out on the good stuff. I found A3 generally entertaining, but more than a little overblown and tedious. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. quote:I thank you sincerely for this gesture, Alec. It's a damn shame that we had to end up competitors for the last spot, but like you I am determined not to let the heat of competition hurt my relationships with my friends here. We are probably the two most similar candidates in ideology of the group, and I fully wish to join forces. Your fine philosophy of support & enrich will not be trampled on or forgotten by me, but rather incorporated fully. I'm very grateful for your support and encouragement, Alec, and only with you and other friends behind me will I stand any chance in this election. So I applaud your building of the bridge, and fully intend to preserve and strengthen it. Thank you also, Wise Man, for your support. Minority representation in our moderating team is indeed a fine goal, and in the absence of a female candidate in the top three I am the candidate who stands to increase our moderatorial diversity the most. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. I can't speak for the types of threads that were around before I showed up, but I haven't noticed many topics at all that deal with musical preferences in as specific a light as "Favorite Beatles Song" would. "Favorite Rock Band" would be somewhat superfluous, though. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. I've read Castaways of the Flying Dutchman, the first of the two, and it was solid. It was full of the usual excitement and wonder of the Redwall books, although as it concerned human instead of anthropomorphic animal communities it seemed considerably less original.
