Religion, Homosexuality, the Usual in General
It's your choice, God gave us that gift: we can choose our own path. Sometimes we pick the wrong one.
Please reread a few posts. It's not a choice. It's genetic programming, and asking someone to change that is akin to ordering someone to have a sex change. It's ridiculous. If someone is physically unable to perform a duty required by Scripture, is he a sinner? If not, I find it hard to believe that homosexuals are. Just because the physical cause is microscopic doesn't mean it's not real.

quote:
Believe me, I wish homosexuals could be saved (I mean, the ones that are truly and inate homosexuals). Just as many other sinners. I'm not gay, but I'm far from perfect. I have many other sins to deal with, just like anyone of us. But just remember that for a sin to be forgiven, we must repent. "Repent and never do that again" (or something like that, in english).
Once again falling back on the Old Testament, I fail to see fire and brimstone coming on Judgement Day. God understands that we are imperfect. We will sin. We will apologize and continue to sin. He have to like it, but the OT does say that He's not going to smite us for it. Again, I claim that the Old Testament is more directly from the mouth of God if you believe Biblical literalism.

quote:
Originally written by Eldiran[b:

In the Gospels, for example, I think there's a record of Jesus speaking to a demon that he cast out, where the demon says that he knows who Jesus is, and Jesus tells him to be quiet.
The demon could have any number of claims to make, not least among them that Jesus was just an ordinary guy. Or maybe the illegitimate descendant of a prominent merchant. Or a martian. Whatever he was going to say was left unsaid.

quote]Originally written by The Creator
4. I have read books by people who have changed their sexual orientation, so it is possible in some cases at least.
I question the authenticity of those reports. There's no way to prove it either way, but I know a number of such conversions have come from those who were never homosexual to begin with or who never truly found happiness in a new heterosexual lifestyle.

?Alorael, who supposes this is argument for the sake of argument now. There's no way to make convincing arguments when religious views clash. At least Spidweb has a long, healthy tradition of inconclusive arguments in the same vein (and on the same topic matter).

A four day disease is unlikely unless you refuse to see a doctor or get a criminal erroneous diagnosis. You can die extremely quickly from a number of conditions, but they're unlikely to be termed diseases. Heart disease, yes, but it's the heart failure that's lethal and that's not a disease. Strokes are events as well. I can't think of anything that kills in four days short of the exotic quarantine-worthy disasters like Ebola.

—Alorael, who actually likes some scams. At least they're more entertaining to read than the endless diploma, insurance, free vacation, male enhancement, and FREE PRON!!!111 advertisements.

If you're using a Mac, there isn't one. Delete the Avernum 3 preferences in the Preferences folder in your System folder (or System Folder, if you're still on OS 9).

—Alorael, who can't help with a PC. He would assume that the Avernum 3 Data folder is in the Avernum 3 folder, though.

Why not do a little bit of Googlework and see for yourself? He was a writer of young children's books that were entertainingly absurd and notable for unique illustration. I find it hard to believe that anyone can go through life without encountering the Cat in the Hat.

—Alorael, who happens to despise everyone who tries to turn Dr. Seuss books into movies, plays, and interactive digitized monstrosities. Those are abominations in the eyes of discerning children everywhere. That group may only include oxymorons, but still...

Go to Sharimik and find the innkeeper. Buy his most expensive drink. He'll tell you to go buy the map from Masok and give you the conversation option to do so.

—Alorael, who still insists that this is a positive feature of A3 rather than a step down from E3.

No. You can use the editor to do it, and then you'll see why you can't. The characters that finish one game are vastly overpowered for the beginning of the next.

—Alorael, who believes that the potion is called a Skill Potion in A1 and A2. It only becomes a Knowledge Brew in the third installment.

Shakespeare was a hack writer. He churned out his plays at a phenomenal rate and they all share many characteristics. The guy found a winning formula and stuck with it. He was the Steven King of the 16th century. No, his works may not all be jewels of literature (they add up to many jewels, but fewer jewels than plays), but they're entertaining or tragic or whatever they're supposed to be.

—Alorael, who says that stripping the language from Shakespeare is much like stripping the language from poetry. Of course you get garbage. Shakespeare chose his phrases very carefully, which is why we're still repeating them today.

Oh, all right. To flesh out the gradually increasing spoilers, the person is Commander Johnson in Fort Emergence and the word is "bunker" (or "bunk," since E3 only takes four letters).

—Alorael, who will add that the building really is of minimal significance.

It's not anything you're going to reach without cheating heavily. In fact, it's at a point at which it really doesn't matter anymore.

[Edit: The list never ends! No, it doesn't make sense to me, either.]

—Alorael, who doesn't see why it really matters. After a point you will never, ever gain another level without cheating, and adding skill points is a more effective way of cheating.

I'd go with the Mithral Sword and Fury Crossbow. +1 AP is, in my opinion, the best ability you can get on a piece of equipment. The Black Halberd is strong, but it doesn't give you an extra attack to work with.

—Alorael, who has no idea about A1. He can remember that he didn't use Demonslayer much, though. It's great against demons but really nothing special in other circumstances.

Dr. Seuss is entertaining, and his books have that remarkable quality of not evincing glaring condescension towards their young readers. He was funny. That's about it.

Shakespeare was vastly more prolific and more literary. I'm not sure whether he threw in all the literary devices that cause English teachers to swoon world-wide on purpose or by accident, but they're there. He created words and phrases that have become part of the English lexicon. In other words, regardless of the quality of his works (which I happen to think are quite impressive), he is probably unparalleled in impact on the language itself.

—Alorael, who thinks that's a pretty good reason to declare Shakespeare mister big English man. Rowling, sadly, wrote books that were indeed good, but not so good that all the publicity and cult worship is merited.

BoA doesn't have trainers. You can use your skillpoints to boost your skills in any town, and I mean town in the scenario sense. Yes, in the deepest depths of the Black Chasm of Doom, you can take a timeout to master the finer points of woodscraft.

—Alorael, who can't list all the NPCs that allow you to purchase skills for gold off the top of his head. Someone else probably can, but he can't.

You had a title once. Sure, you didn't like it, and it was several accounts ago, but you had one.

—Alorael, who believes Alec and Scorp are the ones with the distinction of having two custom titles apiece. Drakey does too, in his way, but one account was never really used.

Behold, the Inflatable Moderator appears!

Lord V, you have just taken the Code of Conduct, spat upon it, and kicked it for good measure. Recant and repent or bad things will happen. In other words, don't use homophobic language or semi-profanity.

If this degenerates into a flame war, I will be sorely disappointed.

—Alorael, who was actually enjoying the topic. You know, horses aren't much of a solution to the problem. Only the few bands of humans, nephils, and sliths can get them to move in any way. It's not possible to have an entire army use them as barricades.

Good books? in General

Dolney, please.

Carl Hiaasen is hilarious. He's not enlightening, uplifting, or eddifying, but he is definitely entertaining. His books are murder mysteries in the way that Terry Pratchett's books are fantasy. Oh, and pick up a few of Pratchett's books too, while you're at it.

Read something by Ayn Rand as well. It will be creepy and you may feel soiled by the end, but it's definitely an experience.

—Alorael, who will bring back SF/F with Roger Zelazny. His books can get repetitive if you read too many at once, but they're definitely good reading. Try the first few books of the Amber series and you'll know whether you love his style or hate it.

Effects of time in Avernum in The Avernum Trilogy

Things do start to fall apart in A3 if you lag behind. The longer you wait, the more demolished Valorim gets. This never makes the game unwinnable, but it can make quests impossible to complete.

The other Avernums are less affected by time. I know there's a certain place that can only be entered on the first day of a month in one game, and there are holidays with various effects, but nothing major.

—Alorael, who prefers the A1/A2 irrelevance of time to the need for speed in A3. He hates being rushed even if it isn't much of a rush after all.

A1: Password in The Avernum Trilogy

Look around in the Tower of Magi, particularly the library. You'll find a book that mentions Haakai. Go talk to the apprentice by the pool in the southern hallway and mention it to him. He'll direct you to a meessage left in the tunnels outside the tower.

Head out, go through the usual bump-into-walls tricks, and you'll find a stone spire that gives you the password. It's "disaster"' incidentally, but you can't enter it yourself in A1 like you can in E1.

—Alorael, who misses that in a number of circumstances. Sure, it's nice that you have to go actually find the information in the right order, but there's a certain appeal in having to actually remember the password for yourself and figure out where to use it.

You don't understand the system. Custom titles are given as rewards for three things:

1. Exceptional contributions to Spiderweb. FAQs, maps, Blades scenarios, and the like come under this heading.

2. Exceptional personality. "Exceptional" as in deviating from the norm, and that's hard to do on a place as inherently deviant as Spidweb. These probably account for most of the custom titles.

3. Slipping bribes to Drakey and/or taking away his toys until he gives you one. This is quite likely to have unpleasant results, but you do get a title.

Thus, the vast majority of Spidwebbers get no custom title.

—Alorael, who did not mention certain titles given as punishments. Canned is for spamming. Banned is for obvious reasons. There are probably more.
