monestry of madness in The Avernum Trilogy

There can only be one Xian Skull topic.

You really want to speak to a number of people in Lorelei. Lyle may be one of them, but I don't think he's the first. Just chat with everyone and someone will send you to someone else, who will send you to someone else, who will tell you to speak with Foxfire. She can be found in any of the towns near Lorelei. Buy her key, head to the series of islands south of Storm Port, and enjoy the madness.

—Alorael, who advises taking several hallucinogens first. They greatly heighten the experience.

Believe what you will. Actually, I'd rather you believe that I am a 13-year-old perverted Swedish schoolgirl. Then you won't suspect anything when you wander close to my house and I snipe you.

It's not personal, it's my job and my hobby. Snipe pedestrian, take wallet. Don't shoot the messenger (I will)!

This has been totally off-topic. Let me try to salvage it.

7:20 - Arise from my slumber and shamble like a thing no longer among the living. Drink skribbane.

8:00-8:30 - Begin my daily momentous tasks. Snipe some pedestrians. Drink skribbane.

1:00-1:30 - Ingest assorted comestibles, including skribbane.

5:00-5:30 - Bring to a close my momentous tasks. Save the world. Drink skribbane.

6:30 - Consume yet more sustenance. Consume yet more skribbane. Ponder the mysteries of the universe. Sweep.

Sometime after 10:00 - Realize that I am still awake and take steps to rectify the situation, e.g. drink skribbane.

Sometime after 10:00 + 1 hour - Fall asleep, possibly while drinking skribbane.

—Alorael, who was certainly not the first to change his name. He is, however, the first to make it a daily occurrence. TM and Alec deserve credit for being the original unidentifiables.

There are a number of ways to reach the underground outdoor section containing the castle. Just go through any of the undead-infested evil places in the woods. Once there, it's a simple matter of crossing a bridge or two, running from a horde of undead things, and entering the castle.

—Alorael, who has had good luck with the front door. It's open and welcoming and the horrible floating ghastly things don't even try to kill you on sight!

Do you have the amulets, and did you remember to have Erika activate them for you? If not, you'll have to suffer through a few more teleportation episodes before you can reach the platform, assault far too many vahnatai and their summoned underlings, and finally fiddle with the control panel.

—Alorael, who can no longer remember for certain if Rentar-Ihrno continues to teleport your party indefinitely as long as the beams are not properly aligned or if she only gets five teleportations total. He suspects the former, but he's not sure. So if you can eventually reach the platform, chances are good that everything is arranged for the grand finale.

I very much want to make a comment right now, but I won't. Some things must never be uttered.

Sadly, I have no pictures of myself to post, nor would I post them. Never let your targets know what you look like before they have bullet holes in them and you're reaching for their wallets.

?Alorael, who has been told he bears a resemblance to a Star Wars character. He can't remember which one, but he very much hopes that it was one of the human types and not, say, a wookie or Jabba the Hutt.

Oh, yeah. Congrats and all that. Hope you live to make 4000 more.

You are, alas, too late. Alec beat you to the... well. We've heard enough about that of late. Though I can't say I find Thuryl particularly attractive with or without clothes. If you ask me, what he needs is some attractive ritual mutilation.

And URP is an abbreviation I'd be proud to have. Don't let the man hold you down, URP!

Neither are present in Exile, as so many have pointed out. I'm afraid the death node wins, and the humans (Exile and Empire) and vahnatai are the only ones who have them.

Sliths, however, can make impenetrable barriers as in Lost Bahssikava. Vahnatai are even more skilled with their barriers. Humans are mostly restricted to building a better force barrier.

—Alorael, who still doesn't think that saying that all adventuring parties join the Exiles is fair or accurate. He can say with some assurance that his parties would play favorites, and the humans wouldn't be one of them.

There are contradictions in the Bible. Look at the first two chapters of Genesis! God creates man and woman with performative power. Whoops, no He doesn't. He creates man from mud and woman from man's rib.

The Bible is rife with inconsistencies, flaws, and errors. They're not news anymore because they have been exposed for years and it's simply not headline material anymore. You can explain all the problems away in a number of ways, but they're incontrovertibly present.

?Alorael, who doesn't see how Jesus claiming to be the son of God (or Son of Man) makes him evil if he lied. Maybe he did it to give more force to a worthwhile message. Maybe he was crazy enough to think he was the son of God but sane enough to have beliefs worth following. Maybe his disciples edited his words heavily. Heck, maybe he had reasonable beliefs and his disciples wrote in miracles to make them sell better. There is no reason to doubt Jesus the historical man. There is good reason to doubt Jesus the messiah.

You can't have it both ways. Either God changed His laws once, and can do it again, or He didn't. If He didn't, the vast majory of Christians go against His decrees daily. Yes, there are many things that are ritually unclean. There are specific ways to regain ritual purity, and it has nothing to do with physical cleanliness.

Basically, if you can second-guess part of the Bible, I'd like to know why I can't second-guess other parts.

?Alorael, who agrees that parts of the Old Testament are clearly outdated. However, parts of the New Testament suffer equally from their distance from modern times. God gave people brains for a reason, presumably. Why not use them?

Unless you have a very good reason or highly insightful addition, reviving a dead topic will earn you frowns. Reviving a topic that has been dead for more than a year requires truly extraordinary circumstances.

These aren't.

—Alorael, who shouldn't continue the zombie march of the topic. On the other hand, as long as it's alive, let it shamble to its own second death in peace.

Once again, a return the the Old Testament Book of Job is enlightening. As far as I know, it's the only time that Satan appears in any way in the Old Testament, and he is clearly acting with God's express permission.

?Alorael, who would like everyone to go back and discard all the Paradise Lost ideas about Genesis. Milton may have put an indelible stamp on Christianity, but he wasn't speaking with the word of God. He was just an author who wanted to write an epic.

Throwing does absolutely nothing. Mage spells and dexterity work as advertised. I am almost positive that Sharpshooter and other abilities that make all missile weapons better make the scepter better.

—Alorael, who takes credit for the findings himself. Should there be errors, the fault lies purely with the character editor.

I have nightmares about Alec. Some of them are horrible impossibilities. Some of them are just recollections.

—Alorael, who doesn't think anyone here has to worry about sanity. They're all at the door, right? Although if Imban's the one who has been stealing them from the coat room for all these years, he has a lot of explaining to do.

There's also a priest who can do it in Fort Cavalier. But you don't need to uncurse the scepter to have it be very useful.

—Alorael, who was very happy to turn one of his spellcasters into a steady source of ranged damage. No, it's not another spell per round, but it's enough to make serious holes in most enemies.

quote:
Originally written by Eldiran:

Basically, I'm somewhat untrusting of the Old Testament, because, well, it's old. Should you read the Gospels you'd find what Christianity's all about, though it may not cover everything about Christianity.
But the OT came directly from God, and God does not change. We have reached an impasse, haven't we? And I'd hardly call something written 2000 years ago the "New" Testament, though of course some of it is indeed more recent than that.

Homosexuality is to a large extent genetically determined. Does God set people up and load the dice against them in the sin game? I've heard variations on the theme of "Yes, because..." and none of them satisfy me. Either God is cruel or He is not. If He is not, there is nothing wrong with homosexuality.

If homosexuality has to be a sin, it belongs at the very bottom of the list. Why? Because it doesn't harm anyone. The vast majority of sins deal with loving one's neighbor, or rather failures to do so. Homosexuality brings as much happiness to homosexuals as heterosexuality brings to heterosexuals. Where's the problem? Again, it may be a sin, but it's even more minor than name-calling.

On the side issue of race: As far as I know, nobody has ever committed atrocities and justified it by saying, "I'm white, so they deserve it." Ever.

?Alorael, who finds it far more easy to believe that mankind is fallible and has done a first-rate job in butchering the holy word of God than to believe that God is petty, vengeful, and bigoted. God would have produced a better-edited set of Scriptures!

Autocombat is tantamount to suicide. Avernum plays favorites, and it likes monsters far more than it likes your party. Even if autocombat doesn't get you killed, it'll waste all your items and spell points, scatter your party, and barely manage to kill your enemies.

—Alorael, who thinks a spell should inflict autocombat as an impairment. It would have to be extremely high level. It's only a tiny bit less awful than being charmed, and only because charm makes you ineffectively try to kill yourself instead of others.

Pornography and fornication are not synonymous. And for that matter, where the punishments for murder are listed, implements of plastic are not mentioned. By ommision, this implies that murder with plastic weapons is not murder.

?Alorael, who wonders how are the hatred stacks up with the idea that saving a life is equivalent to saving the world. That's a real conundrum, ain't it?
