A hint: you don't actually have to use haste to get past any pylons. Another hint: if you end up in combat mode, try to back up and end combat. —Alorael, who has more unhelpful hints. Many more. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Which is no longer supported by Intel Macs, so the fate of Exile hangs in the balance! —Alorael, who actually has hopes for projects like Mac-on-Mac. Chip emulation is a little more work, but people would be willing to pay to keep playing the games of yesteryear. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's a jury-rigged, unorthodox account now. Don't look too hard at #5. —Alorael, who did not, in fact, download Exile from an illegal site. He's sure he could find a site with illegal materials and legal Exile if he looked, though. Unfortunately, he can't post the link. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Jeff Vogel doesn't usually read these boards. If you have a suggestion you should probably email it to him. —Alorael, who wrote that without thinking but realized that a further note is required. Recently Jeff has been reading these forums, so maybe he will see your suggestion. Email is a surer way, though. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I just got my first piece of Gmail spam. I think they were spam, anyway. They weren't really selling anything and contained no intelligible or unintelligible communication. I just got what appeared to be an entirely random string of characters followed by a word. The least spammed address I had before Gmail was a Hotmail address. Yes, that sounds crazy, but I think putting multiple underscore characters in a row frightened the spam spewers away. —Alorael, who misses his excessive underscores. That's not entirely true. Bonuses to your entire party don't count, particulary a pair of Endurance increases and a Parry reward from a well. Any quest reward increases to a single character are treated exactly like a point gotten by training, which means it will restrict purchases and increase training costs. —Alorael, who can only think of two rewards like that. One is First Aid from somewhere and the other is Nature Lore from Fort Dranlon for exploring west of the river. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Now that your great trial is over, Sirhc, I want a verdict. Would it have been more or less painful to go through the scripts to check for problems like the one Thuryl found? —Alorael, who cannot imagine the suffering involved in playing through A4 in the dark. This is a task surpassing Hapless and his opposite (Avatar?), who were merely plagued with unfortunate traits. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The game looks like it was either heavily influenced by Spiderweb or heavily influenced by the influences on Spiderweb. It also suffers moderately from ugly interface. —Alorael, who doesn't like to pass judgement with no details. The skill/attribute system could be taken from Avernum, but it also could be no fun at all. There is no evidence (yet) of a party to go with your protagonist. And the plot remains concealed. Three screenshots aren't much to judge by. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Riposte shouldn't be fixed. Having a skill should never penalize you, and taking damage for having Riposte would be a penalty. Quick slots exist for a reason. They are limited for a reason. Your inventory is not meant to be instantly accessible at all times. —Alorael, who can sound righteous about use of intentory mostly because he never used potions, wands, or scrolls in combat. The most he ever did was switch weapons. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

After most of a lifetime with Cheeseball? I can imagine it. He has both sentimental attachment and the strongest of motives not to have to suffer through another lifetime with another Cheesball. —Alorael, who meant to say that his theory that familiars can't survive as long as their wizards had a hole in it because Cheeseball already has a vastly extended life from before A1 to A3. If he can live that long, why not for another bazillion years of pursuing mutant, magical catnip in the ruins of the ToM? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Eliminating poverty by increasing production and such has been an ongoing process for a long time now. Replacing humans with mechanization is only part of increasing production to make the goods required for higher standards of living cheaper and thus more universally accessible. I'm not sure we'll ever be able to pay everyone a decent wage, but what can be purchased with an indecent (and not indecently large!) wage can keep growing. —Alorael, who has low expectations for a speedy increase in conditions in the Third World, though. Production doesn't reach very far there and everything ends up waylaid anyway. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Why can't you make an Arcane Lore mule? Make a character and just put all available points in Arcane Lore. Books check if your party has enough Arcane Lore to read them, and only after it knows you have enough does it check Mage or Priest to see which characters can learn the spell. The result of mules is your singleton learning spells and your mules not learning them, but they just get deleted anyway. —Alorael, who loots everywhere exhaustively on principle. He can't bear to leave any chainmail behind. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

A city can't be made more diverse by fiat. Celebration of diversity shouldn't mean enforced specific diversity quotas, either. —Alorael, who just walked right into an affirmative action debate. For the record, what he means is that saying New Orleans is too black is as absurd as saying that Minneapolis is too white. Expecting cities to conform to some ideal demographic opens an enormous can of worms. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

A2 is harder than A1. —Alorael, who isn't averse to changing the difficulty in the middle of the game for certain fights. Presumably Jeff put in that feature so that you're not stuck with a bad choice all the way through, but you can also use it to make certain tough battles easier or, if you are so inclined, certain easy battles tougher. I was far more impressed with A4's selection of swords than with its polearms. Some of this is a leftover from the beta, which had far fewer neat spears and halberds. Even playing through the full game left me less than enthused. The Jade Halberd is good, but there isn't much else worth drooling over. The Oozing Blade fulfills much the same function and much earlier. —Alorael, who would say that all slimes are obnoxiously tough. The ones guarding the Oozing Blade just happen to be difficult as well. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If you know a way to make communism work, please share it. I think almost everyone acknowledges that communism is a great system on paper, where none of the problems that crop up in the real world plague it. I maintain that the desire for wealth as one of the motivating factors behind everything we do, perhaps even the greatest motivating factor, makes communism and socialism difficult to implement. The problems of capitalism have already been outlined. Personal opinion is a big part of which point on the continuum is best, but I think that if you like socialism, the best workable plan is to find that optimum point where most people remain motivated but the actual rewards are small because most of the wealth (using wealth loosely) produced is taken and used or redistributed by the state. —Alorael, who is a vegetarian who eats meat. Perhaps familiars can't extend their lives as well as wizards can. That might explain some of Solberg's bitterness. —Alorael, who will pointedly ignore any questions about how Cheesball lived as long as he did without magical help. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

There's a lever in the residential area in the southern part of the lower level of the keep that's easy to miss.
