Sometimes people are quite obnoxious. It's rather less cute than they think.

You know, though, I'm still not impressed by this thread. At all.

Ed, crossing the line and then apologizing and recanting doesn't change the fact that you and the line don't have a very good relationship. Do not insult other members again. This is your last warning.

—Alorael, who quite frankly thinks that there are better places for working these issues out. Instant messenger is perfect for it.

Its purpose is to follow you and then go away. Not everything needs to be deeply significant.

It's still quite possible to complete the quest, though. Rats will reappear in storerooms periodically, so check them more than once. You'll get the tails you need eventually.

—Alorael, who got very bored of rat tail loops around Formello.

7.0

I loved E1. I played it for years. Now, more than a decade later, I can't make myself play it anymore. It's too old and too lacking in the refinements of later Exiles.

The 7.0 is for nostalgia, really. In content it beats E3, but I still play E3/BoE, not E1.

—Alorael, who just broke his own rule and rated based on engine. Fie, fie. Without the engine it's an 8.5. 8.7 for A1 minus two for lacking Lost Bahssikava.

8.7, although I'm not really sure about it.

I'm very, very found of A1. It's just not quite as good as A2.

—Alorael, who doesn't think rating the engine is fair. BoA scenarios don't have any unique engine to be rated on. It's not as though every designer has to come up with the quest list.

I give it a 7.5 for the same reasons as I did for E3. They're the same game, and I'm not rating it for the different engine.

—Alorael, who might lower E3 to a 7.0 if the engine were a consideration. A3's combat is a mess, but the rest of the engine is sparkly in a non-A4 way.

It gets a 9.0 from me. I can justify giving it an 8.0 or 8.5 by how it's set up, and between the added quest log and Dark Waters I feel justified in giving it a round 9.

Will this earn me the disgust of a significant portion of the Blades community? Probably. I still happen to enjoy A2 a lot.

—Alorael, who thinks of A2 is the zenith of the mostly plotless but highly detailed and well designed wandering, questing, and slaughtering RPG subgenre.

Jeff said he uses CodeWarrior, but he said it a long time ago. If he hasn't switched already he'll have to soon, because Metrowerks has decided to stop making it.

Coolest thing about Avernum 4? in Avernum 4

Actually, the arrows bring up a good point, and it's something that's been happening more and more in Spiderweb games. The tedious parts are getting pared down.

You don't need to buy arrows anymore. That's good, because they were never really expensive, just irritating. I remember in E2, before there were weight restrictions, I bought several thousand arrows for all my characters eventually just so that I'd never have to think about arrows again.

Torches and Light spells aren't necessary anymore. They were so reflexive that it's not actually a change. A few areas could be made permanently dark for variety, but there's no need for regular dark areas.

Food disappeared after Nethergate, and I don't miss it.

Even the absence of secret doors is mixed. I miss them, but they were very rarely actually secret. Usually it was a tedious matter of smashing into all the walls until one let you through. Now secret doors don't require wall smashing, and they're consequently more surprising and secret when they turn up.

—Alorael, who was ironically convinced that this absence of tedious details is a good thing by one of Jeff's Grumpy Gamer articles. At the time he was fairly big on the need for torches and food, which he explicitly called bad things.

And now Ash is probably going to be unbanned. Just because he has a cult of followers doesn't mean Jeff doesn't occasionally show signs of pride or temper. Howling for his blood isn't any more helpful than howling for the Creator's.

Additionally, the next person to post "fags" or about bundles of sticks will deserve to be banned.

—Alorael, who doesn't think Ash did anything wrong and is glad that the resolution looks like it won't follow the precedent set by posting dictionary definitions. Believe it or not, there is progress on Spiderweb.

The best part of A4 is combat in all its many forms. It's challenging and fun.

I don't think there's any way to truly make the beginning difficult short of not spending any skill points whatsoever.

—Alorael, who has managed the normal difficulty demo handily with no casters, all mages, all priests, and all archers. It would be tougher on torment, but he's not amazingly skilled like a certain Ash.

If you're in the Grindstone mines, buy a blue Piercing Crystal from the woman who runs the mines in one of the houses in Grindstone. use the Piercing Crystal while standing next to the barrier and it will disappear.

—Alorael, who thinks that works for almost all barriers in all mines you might come across.

I'd rate this 6.9 as a BoA scenario. It's E3/A3 minus any element of surprise or uncertainty and with an additional subtraction (heh) for recycling an old plot.

It's not a BoA scenario, though. As much as I like the old Avernum engine, I'm a big fan of the combat mechanics in A4. Combat balance was the best it's been in any Spiderweb game I've played. I had a lot of fun despite the plot.

So I'll call it a 7.9.

—Alorael, who would call it an 8.0 if it weren't so painfully clear that it's A3 underground.
