If you don't like clicking, keep using the arrows or numeric keypad. I used the keypad for most movement and the mouse only for long, boring overland treks with absolutely nothing to explore. —Alorael, who also recommends looking at the preferences just in case there are some you might want to change. I believe you need a pillow and/or a towel at some point as well. [Edit: It sure would be nice to have a tower, but what you get is a towel.] —Alorael, who had very little trouble coming up with most of the mundane item requirements. The smithing tools was the hardest, as pincers are much rarer than tongs and otherwise apparently interchangeable. They're $25 or less. That's less than just about any new mainstream game, and we enjoy Spiderweb's offerings just as much if not more. If you're paying for graphics and sound, you want to look elsewhere. If you're paying for entertainment, then Spiderweb delivers. Quality is an interesting concept, though. I'd have to call BoE one of the lower quality games I've seen, using the term "game" loosely, but it's also one of the best games available. —Alorael, who supposes it's the definition of quality that's slippery. BoE is a great idea with great execution and an unfortunate plague of mostly minor bugs that add up. It's annoying, but take a look at the scenarios available and it's hard to call it low quality. No, it's an AIM chatroom. Because text communication in real time is more intimate than communication by post, or something of the sort. —Alorael, who remembers the chat as a kind of several hour ellipsis in his head. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

There's an important tool off the coast of Bigail, but it's not one of the so-called artifact quests. —Alorael, who would have been very, very happy if Phoenix Eggs were available as throwing weapons. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I think Thuryl questions "the rich nuptualize their sons into positions of power and usurp everyone else." It sounds bad, but is there a system that works better? Works, mind you. Treating diseases works. Alleviating symptoms works when the disease can't be treated. Government assistance helps keep the gap between rich and poor smaller than in might be, but it won't get rid of it. —Alorael, who should know what suggestions to expect from TM. Still, for the enlightenment of Spiderweb, it has to be asked. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

While I know very little about the Shapers or the Takers, I think the same solution can be used as in E2/A2: if the game begins right in the middle of the war, the whole game can be devoted to ending it. —Alorael, who has gotten the impression that the causes are already obvious and the lines have been drawn. A beginning at this point could just be delivered by a few pieces of dialogue and some books. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

There's a massive world. Great puzzles if you want them, but few are essential. Attention to detail is good, and the writing has a nice dash of humor. You're never left groping for the plot: there isn't much, but you always know what's going on. On the other hand, the world tends towards the generic and the combat towards uninspiring and even frustratingly repetitive. Memorable minor characters abound, but major characters are sadly flat. The plot is lackluster. —Alorael, who would give Exile 3 roughly 7.5. If it weren't for its two prequels, it would be 7.0: the word is bland to the point of absolutely generic town with absolutely generic townspeople. The part of Ermarian worth visiting is beneath the surface. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

quote:This isn't about Spiderweb games. It belongs in General. However, since answers apparently don't have to relate to the games as long as they relate to a question, they all still belong here. [Edit: I don't know how this character () ended up in my signature.] —Alorael, who would be bafflingly dastardly and split the question from the responses if he were a Tech Support mod and if UBB allowed splitting. While gender isn't always obvious from context, the post immediately before yours gives some pretty heavy hints as to the gender of the poster. Most Linux users are using PCs in the IBM PC compatible sense. The others aren't compatible, but I think the real question isn't why PC doesn't apply to Amigas, SparcStations, Macs, and so on but why PC applies to the computers in public libraries, laboratories, and the like. PC no longer stands for personal computer. It is now a recursive acronym for PC computer. —Alorael, who wonders if communicating over the internet means you have an interpersonal computer. Custom titles override all regular titles. That includes Blademaster. My title here is Blademaster. Custom titles show up in profiles. My title in my profile is Blademaster. —Alorael, who deeply thanks Aran for the gesture. It's not triadic or hierarchical, but it's a title. On the other hand, scientific integrity is a little lacking now. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

You don't need males for babies. That's what technology is for! Either, really. An apostrophe after plural acronyms was standard, but I think both are now acceptable and PCs is less ambiguous. —Alorael, who likes Macs and Mac OS. He's willing to accept the chip change as a necessary step, but he'd really be happier if Apple could have just stuck with their old chip, or at least kept Classic around. He still uses it incessantly. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

TM's behavior is atrocious. TM has been temporarily banned for it before. It didn't have much (any) effect, and TM also has this unfortunate habit of being on of the most productive BoXers. In a way, just as Spiderweb can give the boot for minor infractions because it's a company board, it can not give TM the boot for major infractions because he makes BoE/A more worthwhile. —Alorael, who also figures ever board needs a troll. Better the known evil, right? You know the buzzwords, you know the insults, and at least TM is literate and entertaining to those who aren't his target. Lord of the Rings also breaks the RPG mold. Except it's not an RPG. —Alorael, who is sure someone has turned it into an RPG against all reason. No, the stock fantasy setting isn't really LotR. Neither is Angband. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
