He was speaking metaphorically. Spiderweb's zenith came around BoE or Nethergate. Those two were close together, so either works. But E2/A2 were also pretty good. Heck, for all its faults BoA is still a good thing. And, call me crazy, but there are days when I prefer A4 to A3. Neither one has a wondrous plot but Avernum is better than the surface and A4's combat is actually entertaining. Geneforge isn't my cup of tea, but the first one has a good plot from what I've seen. You know what? I disagree entirely. Spiderweb's games have fluctuated pretty randomly. —Alorael, who hopes he will never see any Spiderweb game compared to a real time strategy game with a budget orders of magnitude larger. Yet strangely enough he has never owned Age of Empires nor particularly desired to own it, while he does own every Avernum and continues to play them. Ash was banned for a sense of humor where humor was not appreciated. TM was banned for bending the rules a little too far. EM was banned for idiocy. —Alorael, who is not impressed. Oh, and WM? Remember that CoC and keep the WTF to yourself. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

With a level editor and multiplayer, Lost Souls could have been great. As it is, it's merely good. Ocean Bound can be used as a mild sedative in very small doses and a form of euthanasia without the eu- in larger doses. —Alorael, who will give RW one piece of non-cult credit: his games have much less painful interfaces than they might. That doesn't make them good, but nobody can claim that the mechanics of play are impossible. In particular you can always get to the necessary entry at the bottom of the File menu. There is a critical element missing from this script. I leave it as an exercise for the reader to find it. —Alorael, who isn't counting stage directions. Spidweb isn't a stage, although sometimes this is less obvious than one might expect. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's not especially difficult to get through A4 even if you have one Tool Use character with no ability as a mage and one mage with no Tool Use. You won't ever get the hardest doors open, but most other doors won't be a problem. —Alorael, who did that on his first time through A4 and didn't miss anything wonderful or even especially helpful. The hintbook says which town all the level 3 spells are in and gives some hints on where to buy level 2 spells. There was once a website with all you'd ever need to know, but it's sadly defunct now. —Alorael, who would start looking for spells in Formello. Once you register, the Tower of Magi is another good place for expensive bargain hunting. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I refuse to come up with some kind of composite rating of all BoE scenarios. Instead, I'll rate the scenario editor. In theory, it's brilliant. In execution, it has some minor (and a few not so minor) bugs. However, the bugs can be worked around, avoided, or endured, and the results speak for themselves. 9.8 —Alorael, who will leave 0.2 free for the day, may it come eventually, when BoE is finally debugged. Don't be silly. ELIZA says, "We're not talking about me, we're talking about you." My post was a pun on the mispelled word "merrier" and my disapproval of graemlins, which mar posts. But yes, I can make a case for "marriage" coming from "mar" as well if you'd like. —Alorael, who once created an ELIZA-style therapist and named it SAMANTHA for obscure reasons. He had long conversations with it, and they came to resemble conversations with iGod. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Tool Use is the only skill that has no obvious benefit for the character but still should be concentrated in one character only. —Alorael, who will point out that there's no benefit to spreading out the spreadable skills except lower overall skill point cost. There are no places that are dark to the point where you can't see your surroundings. There are no areas so dark that you shouldn't be able to tell where the walls and floors are. If you can't see things, you have a problem. I don't know the usual Windows ways of making things start working again, but check all your display settings and make sure they're reasonable. —Alorael, who would suggest emailing Jeff if you can't get pretty pictures to work. It's in his interests to make the game playable for you. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

9.7. It has atmosphere, it has plot, it has humor, and it has a few very fun battles. It introduced a new engine that I like a lot. Nethergate is good gaming. —Alorael, who now has to consider the fact that he isn't sure he prefers Nethergate to A2 but rated Nethergate higher than A2. Don't question too much.
