It takes us all by surprise Aran, but eventually, we move on from being Imban to being TM. It happens to all of us...

Our little guy is growing up. I'm so proud!

Oh, and I forgot that I didn't give Ex3 a rating... ummm, I'd say it's worth an 8 .

Well, for A3, not E3, I'm conflicted. It was really fun to play once, but I don't think that I would ever play it again. Atmosphere ranges from outstanding (Lorelei, Gale) to head-scratchingly bad (Ghikra). Quests and combat ranged from entertainingly hard (the golem factory) to relatively dumb and pointless (I don't remember anything on the Isle of Bigail). Some things were not planned out as well as they could have been (the Tower of Magi destruction occurs far too late), and some build up to a great payoff (heading progressively north until one gets to Blackcrag).

Yes, the overall plot is kind of lame, as has been noted, but it's not nearly as lame as A4, and individual characters and plot points nearly redeem it. But that's just not enough to get this a really high score.

I give it an 9: monumental, huge, fun, but also flawed. Probably better than any Blades scenario I've played, but I haven't played many of the top tier.

I'd say just learning how to properly pronounce "Lorelei" might be a feat. I sometimes catch myself saying "lore-ee-ay". :P

Like I said with A4, I will be more harsh than a normal BoX designer because of experience and needing to pay to play the full version.

Plot and environment were the low point. The nameless shopkeepers and innkeepers really subtracted. However, it was a wide open world with lots to do. Numerous side quests and optional dungeons really helped. The plot, although no surprise, was at least new enough at the time to attract some interest and felt fairly fresh. For this I give a 6.5.

As far as gameplay, I'd rate it decently high. The "modern" for its time system was a lot more appealing than its predecessors, so I give it higher marks of 8.0.

The final weighted rate I give is 6.9.

That way works fine.

So, taking the new scores into account, what's the average?

And for Av3, I'd raise my rating...by a point to 9. It's better looking, has more quests, and the combat is so much better.

Imban -- This is Exile III, you may not want to post a ranking for A3 as not to confuse people.

I get the feeling that, were E3 actually to show up as a BoE scenario, it would get very high marks (9.0ish) simply because, for all its annoying flaws, it's still better crafted and more fun than 90% of the scenarios out there. It does have some areas where it's sub-par even for a scenario, though, like the where's waldo feel of the characters. I agree with Ash and Thuryl's assessments, so I guess I'll give it a 6.5. (Edit: Screw U BB)

A3 I would honestly rate lower. The standards seem a lot higher for BoA scenarios, and A3 didn't have the same technical advances or cool new features that E3 did.

I don't know which is funnier- your implication that E3 is "better crafted and more fun than 90% of the scenarios out there" or your implication that scores should be given based on percentile.

Well, you've played more scenarios than I have, I'm sure, but I think that's a fair estimate. Maybe not better than 90% of the good scenarios, but think about all the ones on the "First Attempts" table (if it even exists anymore). There are certainly scenarios that I think are more fun and better crafted. There are just more that definitely, categorically, aren't.

I wasn't implying any kind of percentility. That was a coincidence. C'mon, TM.

I'm stunned and appalled that anyone could confuse me for Imban. I have never been, and will never be Imban. Please, let's not start that wonderful little bandwagon again...

I have to kind of agree with TM's response to "The standards seem a lot higher for BoA scenarios"... there's just nothing to compare to, unless you've got an epic-sized scenario like Bahss. It's been said so many times before, BoE is better and BoA will never be that good... and as a result of that talk, it never will be. So we're left with a few paltry offerings to compare ourselves to (and honestly, it's just not difficult to outdo some of the current crop... I include DoK in this assessment).

However, whenever BoA and BoE are thrust into the same room and compared, I disagree with TM. No matter what BoA designers do, no matter how impressive the effort is, no matter how high of a CSR score it gets, oldbies will just say "Oh, there's no way that's better than (insert BoE scenario title here)". Or even better, "Give up now and go back to BoE... don't waste your time on a dying system"

EDIT: Typo.

Jesus F. Christ. What oldbies are even around anymore? Me? Stareye? Yeah, real BoA-haters there. (Christ, kid. You're arguing against the person who may as well be BoA.)

I prefer BoA to BoE, and not only because of the graphics. There's just some things about A in general that are more likable than E. If I have to work with a clunky editor, so be it . . . only it will take just that much longer.

I decided to give a little more feedback here...

I thought Exile III was a good game, better than E1 or E2. I thought E3 was maybe the reason why I downloaded BoE to begin with. While BoE has many better scenarios, even today I think that Exile 3 is a highly enjoyable epic. (Whereas many BoE epics are not!)

I didn't like the final quest (except Tinraya, that was cool aside from the fact it's possible to get stuck) and the golem tower that much. Those were rather boring.

So I would give it 8.0

E3 was my introduction to this crazy company. It was only later that I played 1 or 2. That said, it was easy to play, easy to follow, and not that addictive. Maybe if I had been younger I would have done more replaying. 6.5 + 1 for introducing me to spiderweb.
