I like the Vahnatai. To introduce them to the fantasy-genre was one of the best feats Jeff has ever accomplished. Posts: 756 | Registered: Monday, August 4 2003 07:00 |

quote:Originally written by Destiny: ready to die young: *slaps herself on the forehead* Robert Jordan! That's the one I forgot. I hate the Wheel of Time. It sucks. Allow me to tell you why I think this. 1. It's too long. By the time next part comes out, I have forgotten everything that happened in the book before it. It's annoying to read when you have no idea what's happening. 2. The characters piss me off. Rand is a loser. All, and I mean ALL the women are manipulative meanies (or the b-word. You choose). The other guys are losers as well. They got no spirit. And why on earth is there no nice ladies in here? Does the writer have some sort of female problems in his life, or what? It's annoying. Also, this is just my opinion. No, it's not. I would like to share it with you. You are completely right. Rand does nothing but whines about how hard everything is all the time, and his two friends (Mat and..Perrin?) are no better. I mean OK, it probably is hard to fight the (AAGHH! what a cliché!) Dark Lord (or whatever his name is in English) but really, over-realistic whining is no good. Not a single character shows more than one side of his/her personality. You can't really sympathise with anyone. As you said, Jordan stretches the storyline into eternity. Nothing ever happens (well, except for the whining). And when something finally happens, you have forgot why it happened. Jordan also writes so wannabe-mysteriously that you don't understand why some things happen until two books later. And then you have forgotten the whole thing. Jordan isn't original, but rather a cliché-collector who steals ideas from other books. Why rewrite something that other people have done better? And it's just plain boring. The few good parts you may find aren't worth the reading of the books. I like my lungs. They have served me well, and I hope we will spend many happy years together. Still, smoking has got some credits too. What about all those dark jazz-clubs with the musty smell of cigarettes hanging in the air. Dammit! If people would stop smoking, the whole culture would wither and die! Those who value their personal health more than they value my liking of jazz-clubs, may (should) ignore my outburst. Posts: 756 | Registered: Monday, August 4 2003 07:00 |

How come most people here that likes fantasy states that J.R.Tolkien is their number one choice? I personally find Tolkiens books a little boring and hard-to-read. He has got some good ideas but I feel he doesn't use them. Many fantasy-authors are overrated. If you like fantasy you should go for some of the more original ones, like Ursula LeQuinns "Earthsea" or some of Robin Hobbs's books. They actually add something more to the reading experience than just hack n' slash. When I was younger, I thought David Eddings was the best writer in the world. I'm still ashamed of myself. He's books are naught but big piles of klichés. Posts: 756 | Registered: Monday, August 4 2003 07:00 |

1. Well, I like very many kinds of literature. As for genres, I mostly read horror and fantasy, but there are some detective novels I like, as well as historical novels. Of course, most books I read cannot really be put into any genre, but they range from quasi-philosophical texts (The Alchemist, for example) to classics (like The never-ending story. I'm not talking of Dostojevskij when I say "classic", as you may have noticed ) Tove Jansson is one of the best authors ever. Anyone familiar with the Moomin books? Recently I've also been attracted by well-painted cartoons, such as Valhalla, Prince Valiant and League of Extra-ordinary Gentlemen. 2. Some are good (Anton Tjehov), some are hopelessly boring (Hemingway). It's just a matter of taste, as it is with any other books. PS. I like books with words like "hither" and "ye". My english was greatly improved by reading some of M.R.James's short short stories, and I learned many words that even my teachers don't know of in the process. Thank you, James! Well, well. That reminded me of my newbieness. Who is Shotts and is he still around here? EDIT: Stughalf. I actually agree with Sauron (about the insulting business, not the rest). But perhaps I'm just too kindhearted. Where's the logic if you aren't allowed to say the word that begins with sh and ends with it, but you are allowed to call other people mentally retarded? And this concerns all of you, including you Sauron. Just cut the crap and be civil. EDIT: God! I'm sounding like a mod! *confusion* [ Tuesday, December 02, 2003 09:32: Message edited by: Ironweed ] Posts: 756 | Registered: Monday, August 4 2003 07:00 |

Well, I wasn't refering to myself. I just pointed out that during the short time I've been around here, I haven't much noticed Queen of the Damned, most probably because she writes only when it's necessary and doesn't care to spam. And when a non-spammer reaches 1001 posts, well, that really is something. Posts: 756 | Registered: Monday, August 4 2003 07:00 |

Nethergate II: no. I still think Jeff could concentrate a bit more on games in the spirit of Nethergate. The old fantasy-dragon-sword genre gets a little boring from time to time. Geneforge is quite good, but still nothing compared to Nethergate. More "realistic" RPg, please! Perhaps SW could be inspired by some other old culture (as the Romans and Celts in Nethergate)? -------------------- Mow down the sexy people. Posts: 756 | Registered: Monday, August 4 2003 07:00 |

At last! Eirik watched the altar loose its powers as Lavius's enchantments began to purify the evil presence. The demons wailed as their source of power finally withered away and cut them of their own plane of existence. They would be weaker now. Much weaker. Lavius was also looking more powerful than ever. As Eirik watched, he raised his mace and crushed the skull of a small demon in one blow. The other soldiers were also looking as if their moral would be better now. The feeling of doom that had overwhelmed them all was gone. Eirik had a strange feeling that everything actually could go well. There was one last thing, however. Where was Jesitonia? OOC: Perhaps a bit short, but I'm really busy at the moment. I just wrote to make sure that Eirik is still alive and kicking... Posts: 756 | Registered: Monday, August 4 2003 07:00 |
