Aran, refer to my earlier post. The 2 bugs I noted don't affect the current month, only earlier months.

Edit: For clarity, I'm referring to this one.

Aran, are you going to fix those bugs?

Emperor Tullegolar has been a member of these boards for 37 years. It does feel like a long time, but it's not that long...

I don't know anything about Macs, so it may be that your problem is not solvable on your machine.

However, I do know that on Windows, it is possible for me to set my display adapter to "Maintain Aspect Ratio", which means I run Geneforge in an 800x600 unstretched window (with a black border on either side, as my display is 1280x800). There is nothing about Geneforge per se that forces it to shear and fill up the whole screen.

For me, that is the best part. I love the fact that I can still find new things in the games even on the third or fourth play through.

Direct linking to that site doesn't work, unfortunately.

By coincidence I watched that film this afternoon, right after slaughtering everything in Gazak-Uss, yet again. Just 10 more days till GF4 and a whole lot of new opportunities for slaughter, yay!

I believe he was being serious. I for one loved the secret passages and sorely missed them in Avernum 4.

Additionally, it can happen that an simplified, unrealistic model of one situation, turns out to be good, useful model of another situation. For example the model of a 2-dimensional, inviscid, irrotational fluid flow - which is too simple to accurately describe much in aerodynamics - is nonetheless a good predictor the flow of thin film of very viscous flow (the Hele-Shaw cell). This is a good way in to lubrication theory.

Bug report:

The 'homepage' information ostensibly defaults to 'completely private', but the data still shows up in the profile if you go back to in or before August 2006. Personally I'm not that bothered, but you probably want to fix it.

Additionally, the 'member for' information is a teensy bit wrong in or before January 2007. (It seems to have arbitrarily added 33 years 9 months 1 day.)

There are quite a few, but sometimes you can experience multiple endings with the same game file by making slightly different choices very near the end. E.g. in GF1 you can have nearly all the endings by saving just before you talk to Trajkov at the Geneforge (assuming you have already fetched the gloves). In GF2 you can complete the game as Awakened, then defect to the Obeyers and win again, then kill Zakary to get the unaligned ending.

Any others?
One example is Iain M Banks's The Algebraist, which gave a pretty good glimpse of the thought process of the Dwellers, but it does rather dominate the book at the expense of the ostensible plot.

Another example would be Orson Scott Card's Xenocide, for the dialogues between the Hive Queen and Rooter, which nicely counterpoint their respective races' psychologies against the human psychology. However it's only a passive commentary on events: we don't truly experience alien psychology in this book as we never see them act, with reasons for their action explained.

It's tricky because writers tend to concentrate on variant human psychologies rather than alien ones. TV SF writers in particular deal in alien stereotypes who can usually be labelled "the warrior race", "the robot/logical race" or "the spiritual race". Or most exotic, a combination!

That's no excuse for Macleod however: he doesn't make any effort to explain the politics, the plot or his characters either.

Scary stuff.

As a Windows user, it is easy to feel a bit peeved when, before one has ever played GF4 at all, Thuryl will have completed it without magic, creations or canisters.

I draw comfort from the fact that, on the basis of the above discussion, this is only possible by using pods, wands and crystals. In which case you're not really playing a no-magic character, just applying stricter than usual limits to your supply of magic.

I'd like to see Aranbot calculate what percentage of posts are posts about posts, as opposed to proper posts. For example, this thread, any celebration threads, and all the discussion of monikers, titles and signatures. I assume there would be an appropriate level of challenge in designing the reg exp to capture all this accurately.

Another posting game!

I am starting a new job week after next, so I'm currently researching (a) my new employer and (b) technical stuff I'll likely need to know in my new line of work.

Never explaining things is Macleod's hallmark; I got rather fed up with it and stopped reading after struggling for a couple of months.

I'm currently reading Hyperion, which is rather more enjoyable.

Must be a long time since you played exile, Slarty! In both E2 and E3 smoky crystals were required in order to cast mindduel. Luckily both games included shops selling them in infinite quantities.

I suspect the change you are thinking of is capture soul, which required a special item (soul crystal) in E2/E3, but did not require anything in BoE.
