Your grammar was always a joy to behold, Djur. I cannot say the same for the rest of you. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. By the way, the founder of Quakerism was named George Fox, not Charles Fox. (I go to a Quaker high school, and we have to take a class on it.) I did do some extracurricular reading on Quakerism, though, just to have some trivia to throw at our teacher and see if she knew it, and I vaguely recall the loincloth incident. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. You are a blagot, SM. Besides, that can't be an English word; in the English language whenever the letter 'q' appears in a word it has to be followed by a 'u', as in, "you are a quagot." Though there have been reports of pairs of male swans stealing eggs from the nests of other swan couples and raising them together. EDIT: Weren't you banned a month or two ago? I could have sworn we got rid of you. Or maybe that was Machizmo... [ Tuesday, June 10, 2003 08:17: Message edited by: Mangophobia ] -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. Economic Left/Right: -4.50. Authoritarian/Libertarian: -7.38. I try to be as liberal as possible...I mean, I don't think faith-based schools play any positive role whatsoever, and there's absolutely no reason a loving, committed same-sex couple shouldn't be allowed to adopt. And the government has no right to choose what a woman does with her body, or whether a woman should have to carry a child she doesn't want. Just my viewpoint. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. Look, I have every right to be offended by what he's saying. He's telling me that I'm wrong and sinful for liking women. Of course I'm going to try to push tolerance on him. He's harming people with his insistence that homosexuality is wrong, because he's telling us that we're inferior to heterosexuals because of the way we feel. I'm not harming anyone by trying to persuade him to accept people for who they are. I understand that by doing that, I'm not accepting Dave for who he is, and therefore being hypocritical. But I believe that if someone's beliefs go so far as to harm and degrade someone else, then that person's beliefs should be argued with, and the person should be brought to reason. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. Actually, Sir David, PR's attitude towards you is the way a lot of us here feel. I, for one, am usually disgusted by you, but I feel sorry for you as well...I tend to think of people like you as brainwashed as well, too blind to understand anyone but those with similar beliefs. I mean, what would you know about homosexuality? You've never experienced it. You only have one friend who's a lesbian, and I doubt you've ever tried to hear her side of the story, just condemned her--oh, I'm sorry, "disagreed with her"--for being "wrong." Obviously, you know absolutely nothing about the things you so readily condemn. How would you? You aren't gay. You believe that it's wrong because the Bible says it's wrong, but the men who wrote the Bible probably knew nothing about it either. They wrote what the opinion of the times swayed them to write. How many of the Apostles do you think were gay, Dave? How many of them had firsthand experience with homosexuality--in other words, how many of them were qualified to condemn it? I pity you, Dave, I really do. You talk about things you know absolutely nothing about, and are convinced you're right simply because a book written thousands of years ago implies that you are. I can't imagine being that close-minded, I really can't. As for you being too young to understand--I'm not sure about that. I'm 15, only a year older than you, and my beliefs on these issues are pretty much the same as they were last year. I don't think it's that you're too young to understand...I think it's just that you choose not to, because you're afraid of the truth. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. I've never understood why people are always trying to "save" Atheists and agnostics. I mean, most of them don't even think of us as people (Bush certainly doesn't; he made a statement about how Atheists shouldn't be considered citizens or patriots because this is "one nation under God"), so why bother with our misguided souls? We're evil and deranged. Do Christians believe that for every soul they "save" they get bonus points in heaven or something? I used to be Christian, myself. When I was eleven or so, I realized how far-fetched and hypocritical it was and renounced it. I don't think that there's a God in the sense of the trinity, and I don't believe Jesus was divine, or that there were any real prophets. I suppose I believe more in a being who set the universe in motion and then left us to fend for ourselves...I can't exactly justify full-blown Atheism, because I figure something had to have started the Big Bang. I guess I believe that if there ever was a god, it isn't there anymore, or it's completely ignoring us. I'm a pseudo-Atheist. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. Not to mention the fact that Jesus talks about slavery like it's a perfectly natural thing, and that when people are being bought as slaves, a woman is only worth 60% of what a man is worth. No, the Bible certainly isn't racist or sexist. The Bible was written by a bunch of imperfect men who contradict each other and reflect the opinion of the times. There's nothing divine about it. Besides, times have changed. It was okay to sell your daughter into slavery then, but it sure isn't now. Likewise, the opinion of the times dictated that homosexuality was a bad thing, but times have changed. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. Yeah. Ever heard the phrase "I chose to be gay the same day you chose to be straight?" Homophobes are really pissing me off today. I mean, not that they don't annoy me all the time, but today I'm feeling especially ungenerous towards them. I know that it's not a conscious choice because I happen to be bisexual. Therefore, I'm half lesbian, and can speak for the lesbian side of my personality. I didn't choose to like girls. It took me a while to realize that I was bi, but that didn't mean I wasn't bi all along. I just didn't realize that my having crushes on girls in middle school made me bisexual until I was old enough to appreciate the meaning of the word and think "Hey, that applies to me; I like girls and guys equally." That's the way it is. Obviously, when you're a little kid and you don't know what the word "gay" means, you aren't going to think it applies to you. Later, in middle or high school, when you feel yourself becoming attracted to people of the same sex, you realize it--you don't "become" gay, and there's no "conscious choice" involved. DB, since you're displaying your ignorance of how this works, I'm going to assume that you're straight. When did you "decide" to start liking girls? What was your first crush like? Did you think, "Okay, I've decided that I want to be straight, and I'm going to like a girl." And voila, you liked girls. Or did you simply start to realize your feelings for one person, whether you wanted to like them or not? To sum up, gay people don't choose to be gay any more than straight people choose to be straight. It just happens. And because there's no choice involved, how can it be wrong? It's involuntary. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. I rather suspected. That kind of godawful spelling can only be intentional. My hat goes off to you as well, for being one of the precious few newbies who pays attention to grammar/spelling, when not making a mockery of them for humorous purposes. I think your reality check would be better spent realizing that the unbelievers of the boards do not want to be prayed for and will be very irritated if you continue to try and preach your religion at them. I get enough of that at school. If I wanted my soul to be saved, I'd save it myself. Since I don't believe in souls, or God, or organized religion, or prayer, please don't attempt to make me. I don't force Atheism on you; please don't force religion on me. On second thought, go ahead and pray for us if you want to. Just don't tell us about it. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. Mangophobia means "fear of mangos." DUH. Sir David, by saying that homosexuality is wrong, you are telling homosexuals that their love is not as legitimate as heterosexual love. You are harming homosexuals with your beliefs by implying that they are inferior to heterosexuals, and that's wrong. Homosexual love is every bit as real and legitimate as heterosexual love. I have many, many gay friends whom I have seen in loving, committed relationships and who are hurt by the kind of viewpoint you're expressing because people who share your beliefs throw things at them and call them nasty names and vandalize their cars and so on. I'm not saying you yourself do this, but a lot of people who share your views on homosexuality do. 16% of all hate crimes are committed against homosexuals, and a good 75% of those are religiously motivated. When I'm eighteen, the first thing I'm going to do with my new civil rights (which don't apply to minors) is start lobbying for gay marriage to be legalized in PA. Granted, I probably won't make much of a difference, but at least I'll be able to say I tried. You know, the one thing I never understood was how anti-gay activists ( ) are always claiming that gay marriage, or even homosexuality in general, is going to "damage the traditional family structure" and other such idiocy. What, do they think that married gay couples are going to break into the homes of righteous Republican citizens and demand them at gunpoint to divorce? I absolutely fail to see how homosexuality is hurting anyone. Live and let live, and focus on your own darn family. To Rosycat: Because of the EVIL RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVES who think it will BRING ABOUT THE APOCALYPSE and BREAK APART THE TRADITIONAL FAMILY STRUCTURE and CAUSE SMALL CHILDREN TO DEVELOP LEPROSY. To David: I think you fall under the "ignorant" category, personally. To be so blinded by your religion as to refuse to accept people for who they are, and to go so far as to tell them that they're wrong for feeling the way they feel...I call that ignorant. It's narrow-minded, and narrow-mindedness is ignorance because close-minded people are so convinced that they're right that they refuse to see any other options. Have you ever met a gay person? Have you ever tried to have a conversation with one, or tried to look at life from their perspective? Or have you simply condemned them because you've been taught that it's wrong? I don't care what the Bible says; just because the Bible says something doesn't make it true. In the words of Clarence Darrow: "The Bible is a book. It's a good book, but it's not the only book." I'm not criticizing your religion. I'm criticizing the way you follow it to the point where you feel justified in harming other people. I wouldn't have any problem whatsoever with organized religion if it was live-and-let-live. If you're going to stubbornly refuse to even look at the other side of the issue and just hide behind your Bible and shout "IT'S WRONG, AND I'M RIGHT IN SAYING THAT," then I place you in the category of "ignorant homophobes." Dinner tonight was amusing. Frozen pizza was on the menu, but it fell down the back of the oven rack and was burned to ashes, neraly setting the house on fire, so while everyone else was opening doors and getting the smoke out, I made a can of soup. Yum. More carbs, but with overprocessed chicken and waterlogged celery. EDIT: And Zephyr...if you don't believe in Satan, why are you condemning us all to hell for saying "goddamned?" Perhaps that's simply my heresy speaking, but if there's no Satan, there's no hell. I can picture that now, though...down in hell..."Hey! Guys! Just got word--Satan doesn't really exist! Anyone ever heard of them? They're "progressive rock," and I've kind of gotten into them ever since my music teacher, who plays piano and background vocals for them, brought them in to play for the high school. They're really quite cool. Apparently, they're popular mostly with college students, but they have a few fansites, and so I was wondering if anyone here had ever heard of them or any of their albums...I can only remember their second-latest album "Cowboy Poems Free" and their new one "Mei." -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man.
