What's wrong with slash? I happen to think there's quite a bit of Sam/Frodo innuendo in the trilogy, and that it was intentional. Oscar Wilde had to disguise his homosexual innuendo in stories so that stupid people who condemn homosexuality without knowing anything about it wouldn't get it and arrest him (although they did, eventually...) Perhaps it was the same with Tolkien, but he was simply better at hiding it? After all, it's being said nowadays that Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were more than just friends...it's a possibility, no? Or maybe I am reading too much into it, and Sam and Frodo's relationship is perfectly platonic. It's entertaining for people like me who enjoy slash to think it's something more, though, which is why I do it. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. Anime fan though I am decidedly not, I rather liked the biting picture. Reminds me of a slashfic I'm working on, only with humans... Never mind. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. Yay for slash! As I know nothing about anime, I prefer to simply refer to slash as slash. The Avalokiteshvara is hermaphroditic, I believe. As far as I know, I am not. That comment was uncalled-for, at any rate. (No, ADoS, I am NOT going to tell anyone here my measurements.) -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. All righty. The statue of the Avalokiteshvara that I resemble if you squint and picture it with bushy red hair and a shirt. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. Yeah, like gang up on you and try to drown you in a kiddie pool while the lifeguards watch with amusement as the poor landlubbing counselor gets her head held under by bunch of homicidal six-year-olds and can't escape... *clears throat.* Ahem. Just reliving a few nightmares from last summer. And by nightmares, I mean actual near-death experiences. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. I feel your pain. I could never bring myself to lie about my age for anything. It may not have any legal repercussions (then again, it might...) but it does have moral ones, if you have the conscience to care about that sort of thing. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. Yeah, that's second on my pet peeve lists. Comma splices are higher than they should be for someone who didn't learn how properly to use a semicolon until eighth grade... *bangs head against wall* YOUR! YOUR, YOUR, YOUR, YOUR! YOUR friend! Not "you're!" "Your" is possessive, "you're" is a contraction for "you are!" I don't think Ruth wants anyone to be her are friend. Nice sentiment, though. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. My Latin class seems to have coined the phrase "uber-vir..." Ahem. I don't know, "uber" isn't a bad word to have around. It kind of creeps into your vocabulary when you aren't paying attention, and then you'll just suddenly use it in conversation and wonder where it came from. I don't know much German, but I do use the word "scheise" a lot...it's less offensive in a classroom setting. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. That's "Zephyr and I." :P At any rate, I would think that *asking* for friends is a good way not to make any. Hmm. Well, if I'm correct, and there's a very good chance I may not be, because I don't pay attention in history class, Avalokiteshvara are the Buddhist equivalent of saints, people who are capable of and ready to attain enlightenment but deliberately delay their progression to Nirvana in order to help others achieve enlightenment, and then when everyone has become enlightened they can all continue to Nirvana. That's the definition of a bodhisattva, anyway. What I'm not sure about is whether Avalokiteshvara is synonymous with bodhisattva. I think it is... Anyway, since bodhisattva/Avalokiteshvara are so saintly and selfless, there are a lot of statues and paintings and suchlike of them, and there's one statue in particular of a certain Avalokiteshvara that I apparently resemble. One of the traits of Avalokiteshvara is that a lot of them seem to have a thousand arms. The Avalokiteshvara in question, the one I resemble, has no arms. This is one of the ways in which I do not resemble it, as I do indeed have arms. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. The world is a dark place when Rosy thinks she's Alec. *frowns grimly* Hmmm...I used to be Rider of Rohan, RoR for short, because I always liked the Rohirrim and their horses and swords and cool helmets and scary triangular mustaches and their shieldmaidens and what have you. Then, during my period of indignation at the way Peter Jackson screwed with the Two Towers, I changed my name to Mourning for the Marchwarden in honor of the character he needlessly killed off. When I was done being indignant over Haldir's death, I became Little Miss Agoraphobia, because I'm small (compared to my hulking male friends, of which I have a lot, so I feel small) unmarried and female, and terrified of open, public spaces (agoraphobia is the antonym of claustrophobia, which makes things difficult in Latin class because one of the other students is claustrophobic and we can never agree on whether to have the door open or closed.) Yeah, that sums up my history of publicly displayed names. -------------------- "Man hands down misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf.
