Here we go, finally some pictures of me. I'm the CIT off to the right in this one, the one on the left holding the sign here, the person with wet shoulders looking off to the right in this, the guy in the back in this one (pseudo-action shots are uncomfortable, especially when the camera refuses to work), the focus of this picture (looking short and fat for some reason), the foremost male in this one (not sure why my face looks so flat), and the guy on the right looking sideways in this.

You probably wouldn't recognize me from these if you saw me in real life since they're all either distorted or far off... the pictures from the other session of that camp I worked at should be up soon, and I'll post them then if this topic's still going.

EDIT: I almost forgot: thanks to Aran for making these pictures postable.

While some poets can get away with stretching rhyme and rhythm, most cannot. The same goes for narrative poems. I think you need to focus more on the poetic aspect rather than the meaning of the poem.

I'm in New York too and I believe Nethergate took about a week and a half. Don't quote me on that, but I definitely remember that it came before I thought it would.

Happy (non-alcohol related) Birthday (for once)!

*sigh* I guess this is the place to ask, though - anyone know the drinking age in Ireland off the top of their head? I hope to go there for college.

CivII and AoE2 taught me quite a bit of history, much of it indirectly (by getting me interested in learning more by myself). Both also taught me many military history definitions, while D2 fleshed that knowledge out a bit by adding weapon names to my arsenal. Computer game music in general has helped me to write and play my own music, which is nice. Strategy and logic, I guess, could be considered blanket lessons as well.

I't likely that I've learned more, at least subconsciously, but I couldn't say what it is that I've learned. Although this is kind of stretching the "taught by video games" rule, coming to these forums has certainly been a learning experience.

Nothing. This is a prime example of the stupidity that often comes of paranoia.

I find it odd that the UCC made such a point of contradicting a single man over such a trivial issue. Do they really have nothing better to do with their time than take pictures of a plush toy in the president's office? Seems kind of overdone to me.

I'd like to see something new, and I think the majority of the board is with me on that. Personally, I was surprised to see the Avernum over Exile results, but that could easily change. Maybe the newbies are changing the ratio faster than I thought.

I'm sure many of you have seen the list, "What Video Games Taught Me", on shirts and posters and such, and some of you remember the 1001 topic(s) here ("##. kats r skary lolz" sort of thing). I was wondering today, though, what do video (and computer) games actually teach us? I mean, we've all heard about hand-eye coordination and video game violence, but surely there are other lessons packed into what is the primary means of entertainment for quite a few of us. I know I learned more about history playing CivII than you'd think I could (only because I played when I was 11ish). So, seriously, what have video and computer games taught you?

I'd rather play something written originally for those three instruments - I have plenty of material that's already transposed.

That would be an interesting ensemble to hear...

Toast, that CD could very well be what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, I can't listen to the sound files, presumably because I don't have a subscription, and the distributer's website does not seem to have the CD available. Are you (or is anyone else) a subscriber, by any chance? If not, I suppose I'll delegate the task of finding and obtaining this CD to my family.

Mung has a good point, unfortunately, and I'm reasonably sure that any request I made for money would be countered with something along the lines of "I already gave to the tsunami aid effort". My town gives far less than we should. It's sad, but it's reality. Get the word out online, though, and not just here - that's a good idea, and I wish you the best of luck (and God's blessings; hopefully that's not too offensive to us Spiderwebbers).

I'm looking for a classical flute, viola, and piano trio to play with two of my friends, hopefully for a school concert sometime before May/June, and I'm having quite a bit of trouble finding one. I would like something non-atonal, and preferably something orginally written for said instruments (unless there is something like Flight of the Bumblebee which sounds better on instruments it was not written for). It should be under ten minutes in length... probably over five, but that depends on the piece. At the moment all I have is a Bloch concertino of which I cannot find a full record. Any suggestions?

Agreed. The thing about this is that one can help in both situations - send your money to Asia and send letters to your government leaders.

BtI, you have a good point about Indonesia, and if I had to choose right now between helping Asia and helping Sudan I would probably help Asia, at least short term. Medical aid, food, fresh water, and shelter all must be provided as soon as possible to avoid losing as many as were killed initially. But the Darfur refugees have many of the same problems with the addition of human enemies actively attempting to exterminate them, and whereas civilian aid and monetary support could do wonders in Asia, military action and diplomacy would be more helpful in Darfur. We can and must do both. I emphasize the Sudan crisis only because the international community would rather look the other way and mumble vague entreaties to stop the massacre than roll up their sleeves and bring the warfare to an abrupt halt. We constantly hear about the tsunami and what we are doing or will do to help, so why the double standard? It's easier to shed tears and send money than to make ultimatums and send soldiers, I suppose, but that's no excuse. Increased international aid is a vote loser, sure, but the current lack of aid is a life loser. The politicians and the public have opted for the latter. How revealing.

Oddly enough, the problem here in New York was heat as well - my friend's yard and driveway are arranged in such a way that huge puddles form in the best places to throw and catch and chase a frisbee. Snow is preferable to no snow, but when that snow becomes slush, the lines blur a bit... at least we got a snowball fight out of it.

Maybe this makes me a bad person, I don't know, but I am still more concerned with the on-going crisis in the Darfur region. There are fewer casualties than in Asia so far, yes, but we can assume that another such disaster will not strike for a while. This is not the case in Sudan, where the disaster will continue for a while yet if nothing is done by the international community. If it does go on, the death toll could very well exceed that of the recent natural disaster. Send your money to Asia, but please don't forget Africa.

Happy New Year, all! Playing frisbee in the snow is definitely a great way to celebrate, no matter how cold it is. Sparkling grape juice isn't the greatest substitute for the rael thang, but I've never had better cider, so I guess that balances it out.

I only received two kisses so I thank Gizmo for filling out the ranks.

First scenario - out of those choices I'd have to shoot the other person, for more or less the same reasons everyone else has come up with. In reality, though, I don't think I'd give up trying to save the other person unless I were harmed too badly to continue, even if I knew that it were impossible to save him/her.

Second scenario - I'm pretty sure I'd shoot, and no, those other variables don't change my decision. I don't think I'd be able to shoot, anyway, even if I decided to, and (see other responses for the rest).
