I'm sure there are plenty of legitimate programs with that name, but I was working on the assumption that since he didn't know how it got into his startup items, it probably wasn't one of them.

Supposedly, it's possible to make a reasonable scenario without touching scripts. We'll see.

The main selling point of Hunt the Wumpus is the layout of the caves; canonically, they have the same topology as the surface of an icosahedron.

You can get a discount if you buy the whole Exile or Avernum trilogy at once. I imagine a similar offer will be available for the Geneforge trilogy once Geneforge 3 is released.

Eh, no, apparently she's referring to some specific implementation of HtW or other HtW-related game.

Hmm. My semi-educated guess is that you went to a site (quite possibly a porn site, but that's none of my business) that forcibly downloaded spyware onto your computer, and the spyware had a bug.

I barely remember a word of any of the above languages now.

While I find your use of emoticons in that reply profoundly unsettling, the sentiment is appreciated.

I really wish I had something to say right now.

Hmm, let's see.

Well, I received medical confirmation today that I almost certainly don't have skin cancer, which is good for me but not really a brilliant conversational topic.

Eh, might as well get all nostalgic. I've been associated with the BoE community (originally on Aceron's boards, then at the Lyceum and Arena) for five years now. It's been a year and a half since I was coerced by friends (hi, Alec!) into joining the "official" SW boards. As such, I arrived in the later days of Misc, back before people (for the most part) came to their senses and stopped creating political and religious topics for the express purpose of sniping at each other (no offence, Alorael!)

Perhaps some of you expect me to long for the days when and all the people I originally knew were still here, but I don't. I've seen old members leave and new members welcomed with varying degrees of warmth. We're still a community, and a community is not defined by any member or group of members. We would still be the SW community without Alorael or Drakey or TM or Alec or Djur.

The ship of Theseus is a well-known metaphor, but it hardly applies in this case; new members do not and cannot replace those who leave, but instead contribute their own unique personality and knowledge, to the enrichment of those who remain. Our community is something more organic than an artificial vehicle, despite the very medium through which we communicate being more artificial than a ship, which at least may be made of wood. We are more of a slime mold of Theseus in a Petri dish, growing on some fronts as we die back at others, coalescing and dividing constantly, foreign particles falling on us and affecting us from outside the scope of this environment, the whole and its component parts all reshaping with time.

So with all that said, in what sense are we still the SW community? We are, because we say we are, and because that is what we wish to continue being.

... Wow. That ended up sounding even more wanky than I'd expected. Oh well. I'm just posting this because I have something important to do and am procrastinating.

I personally like Wumpes as a plural of Wumpus, even though there's no real linguistic justification for it.

And yes, I've played Hunt the Wumpus before.

Well, finding reliable patterns could allow us to predict when the next presidential assassination would occur, thus allowing us to prevent or at least prepare for it.

http://www.snopes.com/history/american/linckenn.htm

This provides a pretty fair summary of the Lincoln and Kennedy assassinations. Basically, most of the coincidences are pretty contrived, most of the rest are pretty trivial, and some of them aren't even true.

1. A few weeks, probably.

2. You could pay by cheque or international money order. Not sure what the situation is where you live, but here in Australia you can get an international money order at any major post office and all you need is the appropriate amount of cash. Of course, if it gets lost in the mail you've still lost whatever you paid for it. A cheque requires you to have a bank account and may involve higher fees, but you don't actually fork over the money until it's paid to its intended recipient.
