Yeah, I can easily imagine how someone could feel humiliated in your presence. Hell, just knowing that you exist makes me ashamed to be human. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Well, technically, anyone could register and *claim* to be named Nathan Ashby and from Canberra. There's plenty of corroborating evidence (the Lyceum post, the website, the email address, etc) which indicates Ash Lael is almost certainly who he claims to be, but still, Overwhelming may want to make absolutely sure before removing Creator's work, and I suppose that's fair enough. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Let's try this again. By registering to post in this community, you agreed to give up part of your rights to free speech in exchange for the right to assemble here. If you don't hold up your part of the bargain, we're perfectly entitled to kick you out. You'll notice that the Constitution only says that Congress will make no law restricting the freedom of speech, not that private individuals and organisations can't make agreements involving such restrictions. Your right to free speech ends where our right to freedom of assembly begins. Now start paying attention to the Code of Conduct; it's there for a reason. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Technically, you can use First Aid without a first aid kit, but unless you put ridiculous numbers of points in it you're almost certain to do harm. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

I have to agree with Toast's "bureaucratic feudalism" take on the Empire, at least to some degree. It's the only feasible way an organisation that big could be run; there's plenty of evidence that Prazac doesn't have the kind of power needed to control the fine workings of the entire Empire, and as Alec says, having everything controlled by hereditary nobility would require one hell of a big royal family. (And let's face it, before paternity testing, every man and his dog could and did call himself the rightful heir to a throne anyway.) -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Well, it depends on whether you tried to click the link in this thread or in the actual virus email. If you clicked the link in this thread, it won't do anything regardless of your operating system, for the reason I mentioned above. :P -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Please let's all try to be nice. What's done is done, Kelandon's happy, Overwhelming got nothing more than he deserved for committing an illegal act, and we can only hope he doesn't make a huge fuss about it. Regarding SW being able to distribute scenarios without needing to ask the designer's permission, that still relies on SW actively seeking out non-submitted scenarios. Certainly, SW seems to be making positive steps in that direction so far. Still, SW's awareness of the very existence of these orphan scenarios relies on the SW and Lyceum community's efforts to maintain a scenario database, and the more third-party scenario websites there are out there, the more work that is. Also, SW has a policy of not hosting scenarios that receive low ratings (which, I admit, are generally no great loss to the community) or which require replacement of default resources such as player character graphics. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! quote:There's a bit of history behind this. Overwhelming has, in the past, declared an intention to host all kinds of content whether he could obtain permission from their creators or not. Furthermore, his forums were intended to compete with SW's forums, his script database was intended to compete with the Lyceum's Codex, and so on. Basically, he set out to make his site the hub of the BoA community, without regard to whether such an attempt would be necessary or beneficial to the community. We tried to convince him that an additional BoA site that attempted to host everything, when sites already existed to do everything he intended to do, would only lead to confusion and fragmentation of the community similar to what happened in the early days of BoE, but he wouldn't listen. Not surprisingly, this got under certain people's skin, and it's a big part of the reason for the ill will toward him. quote:The course of action to be taken was discussed on AIM among a small group of the community's older members before taking it to the boards. We decided it was better to publicly warn Overwhelming first before taking action that might lead to his site being shut down. quote:It's probably not entirely untrue to say that the CoC is applied with more lenience to members who are generally known and liked by the community. Every community has its unwritten rules. quote:Sure, this may not be too much work for Kelandon if it's just Overwhelming's site we're talking about. When a dozen sites spring up all trying to do the same thing, just keeping track of them all becomes a chore. This is the way BoE went, and as a result, a lot of graphics and scenarios were lost to the community when sites gradually started to go down. The solution is not to have a lot of BoA sites, but instead to have a small set of central BoA sites that are known to the community and not dependent on the support of any one member of it. Hence the Lyceum community, the Alexandria and Louvre projects, and so on. Most of what Kel has at his own site is also at one of these community-maintained sites; his scripts, for example, are at the Lyceum's Codex, where anyone can see them but where Kel can easily modify them himself if necessary. To put it bluntly, we were here first, and for that reason alone we're better equipped to do what Overwhelming's trying to do than he is. quote:I know this is off-topic, but to my mind people have a reasonable expectation that the coffee they purchase won't cause third-degree burns if spilled in their lap. A scenario's custom objects script is the file in the scenario folder named [scenario short name]data.txt. The scenario's short name is the name of the base file (the one ending .bas) after you remove the .bas file extension. So for example, the short name for Valley of Dying Things is valleydy, and its custom objects script is valleydydata.txt. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! BoE's item-dropping percentages were mildly broken; maybe the same is true of BoA. Try giving it a 120% chance of carrying the item and see if that works. Of course, the surefire way to do it would be to give the monster a custom creature script and put some code in the DEAD_STATE that places the item on its current location.
