Thanks. The new comp's great so far. Just one problem, really, which is that the fan is loud. (The previous computer's fan was quiet, because it was broken, which is why the computer overheated and buggered up.)

Yeah. Most BoE scenarios aren't tremendously hard; if you really have a tough time of it, just invest skill points in about 5 ranks of Luck as soon as possible and notice how your characters just became a lot harder to kill.

Err. Are you using the latest version of BoA? It sounds suspiciously like the scripts are using calls your version doesn't support. Download the latest version off SW's site.

Yes, Death is what you're supposed to find in the basement. (That's Death with a capital D; you're not supposed to find your death there.)

This sort of thing works well until pedants start insisting on using 'well' with 'to be', against all common sense.

An example of this is me asking a comrade 'How are you today?', them responding with 'I am well', and the two of us retiring to Switzerland for dongchongery, with me markedly sadder than usual.
You will, then, be sad to hear that I have trained myself to respond in such a way habitually.

Well, except for the part about Switzerland.

That part didn't require any training to become a habit.

Update: good news and bad news. Bad news: computer broke down again, is officially on its last legs. Good news: this gave me an excuse to get a brand new computer.

I am dizzy with power.

Some scams are even cleverer than that, though; they can actually change the URL in the browser's address bar so that it's different from the URL that is in fact being loaded by the browser.

That's like saying surgery is bad but some is accepted to treat diseases. It can only be taken seriously given a pretty anal-retentive definition of "bad".

Anyway, there's still the fact that an excess of choices can confuse and annoy the player even more than a lack of choices can.

Not much to say about the thrust of your article, apart from that I basically agree with it.

Regarding your example, that's the best suggestion I've ever heard to make ZKR more interesting, although I'd suggest making the first time-limit cutoff much, much sooner, so that players would really have to rush through the rest of the scenario to get an easy ride at the end.

Actually, sending credit card details by email is somewhat risky. Unless you encrypt your email, it's possible that your details could be intercepted. I've heard the security of email being compared to that of a conversation in a crowded restaurant -- chances are that nobody who overhears you will be interested in what you're saying, but there's always a risk.

What you have to do is use the Death Charm while standing right next to Melville, but only after you've had the priestess teach you the ritual. Unfortunately, the scenario's a little buggy. If you tried to use the Death Charm before learning the ritual, you may have glitched up the Death Charm's script. Try reloading your saved game. If that doesn't help, you may have to start over.

quote:
You could not call the wands you invented "wands"?!? You were forced to refer to them as "new spells"? I KNOW that is not right! The engine does not allow you to create new spells but DOES allow for new items.
Well, the thing is, special spells differ from ordinary wands in that using them requires MP instead of draining charges from the wand.

I see potential for a compromise here, though. Make the special spell items spellbooks; using the item represents casting the spell from the spellbook (instead of from memory as with a normal spell). This would also explain why the special spells, unlike normal spells, can be transferred easily from one party member to another. The spellbooks will still technically be categorised as "wands" on the inventory screen, but I hope that's such a minor issue that ST won't be bothered too much by it.

If I ever design a scenario that includes special spells, this is how I'll probably deal with them.

quote:
That is my point. If you really desire to create your own worlds with your own races, spells etc. then use a construction kit that allows such(The open Source "Runesword II" for example even though that would require a lot of work)
All such programs that I've seen that were of any decent quality are Windows-only. Many of us here, including TM and me, are Mac users. BoE and BoA are pretty much the best tools available to us.

Well, there's an auto-hills feature. It doesn't work very well except for relatively simple hills, though.

For a beginner, Spears is a high-quality and relatively easy scenario that will take a party from level 1 to a medium/high level (20-ish, depending on how many advantages your party has). From there, you could try out a good, small scenario for high-level parties, like Truffle Days or Requelle's Nightmare. Above that... well, the problem with Very High level scenarios is that the good ones aren't easy, and the easy ones aren't good.

Any scenario made by Alcritas will be very good, but the combat tends toward the difficult side so I wouldn't recommend his works until you're a more experienced player.

There's a little dip in the ground in that area, if memory serves, where the secret entrance is located. I think you can only find it once you've been told about it.

TM has his own unique idiolect of the English language. One gets accustomed to working out what he's trying to say eventually.

An even better way is to ask the appropriate organisation's customer service department (in this case, Paypal's) whether they've been sending out any such emails. 99.9% of the time, the answer is no.
