I'm using Safari to download the latest versions of the games that run natively in OS X (as per Drakefyre's suggestion in another topic), but have twice now encountered a weird download bug.

For some reason, my broswer just keeps on downloading data after it should be finished. In other words, once it's finished all 14 MB of the BoA .bin installer, the progress bar freezes and the count keeps going up, saying things like "15.4 MB of 14 MB". I figure this has to be a bug in Safari, because this same thing has happened with two different downloads.

Anybody have any ideas on what the heck is going on here? This has got to be the freakiest thing I've ever seen an otherwise sensible browser do.

Someone else recently experienced the same bug; apparently for him it went all the way up to 300 MB!

I suggest you email Jeff and see what's going on.

Hmmm... I'm no technical expert, but it sounds like Spiderweb recently switched to using one of those new IBM Banana-Boomerang Yo-Yo Servers.

:P

I was just trying to convey how goofy the server must be to do such a thing.

And actually, I've just run across the same problem on another website entirely. So it must be a broswer bug.

The saga of the Incredible Never-Ending Download continues...

I was able to download the games just fine using the HTTP transfer method, rather than the FTP. I don't know what that means, but it did work.

He obviously knows what HTTP and FTP are, just not why one worked and the other didn't. :P

Uhhhh I would just download IE and use it to download those picky files. . .Its useful to hav ea copy of it around anyway since some older websites only work with it.

Update Safari to 1.2. and your problems should stop. Unless of course it is the server.

I'm using Safari 1.2.3 — but as I said, I've not encountered this problem with HTTP downloads. I tried an FTP download from another website and encountered the exact same problem.

The Mystery of Mysteries deepens. Last week I downloaded some files via FTP using Safari and experienced no problems whatsoever. Yesterday I downloaded Geneforge 3 the same way, and again no problems.

I guess it was some unpredictable Safari software hickup.
