if you can't pronounce "Wise Man", then you are an idiot.

And how do you pronounce Khoth? I've always thought that that name looks nice in its written form, but that it's a pain to actually say out loud.
So I pronounce it Edwin.

My assumption is that it's just a lightly aspirated K -- which every English speaker will do at the front of a word anyway -- followed by -oth as in broth.

A member of these forums, whose real name is Edwin, goes by the handle of Khoth.

I also like to call him sweetie.

So maybe it's only me who can't pronounce it well. It wouldn't be surprising, actually.

Ouch. My father does exactly the same. I've told him so often: "It's AranCAYtar, not aRANcaytar"... :P

cav - uh - NOSS - kuss.

The "uh" in the second syllable is an indistinct vowel of the type usually represented by an upside-down "e."

Since it looks Latin, until now I've pronounced both a's as long...

Is the name derived from anything in any language?

Mainly I just pronounce names that I see how they are spelt. That would explain why I do bad in English class...

Another reason might be that you use an adjective in the place of an adverb. :P

(For those who don't get it, 'bad' should be 'badly')

"Bad" in that case functions as a noun, not an adjective. :)

Well, is he trying to says that he commits vile deeds in English class or performs poorly? If the latter, then "badly." If the former, then "bad."

I doubt he truly becomes an evildoer once he sets foot in an English classroom, though. :P

I pronounce Khoth with the h almost silent, like Kelandon says. Except that in real life I can't pronounce "th" very well so it comes out a bit like Koff. I'm pretty sure that saying it to people in real life would feel less silly if I could actually pronounce it.

This sort of thing works well until pedants start insisting on using 'well' with 'to be', against all common sense.

An example of this is me asking a comrade 'How are you today?', them responding with 'I am well', and the two of us retiring to Switzerland for dongchongery, with me markedly sadder than usual.

I pronounce Khoth as Koth and add a very minor effort at accentuating the aspiration. One could make a case for it being a throaty sound like certain Hebrew letters, which are usually transliterated as 'ch' but occasionally written 'kh' instead.

I pronounced "Wise Man" As "HWIZ-eh MAIN" in order to make WM unhappy.

—Alorael, whose name can be pronounced many ways. The "ae" alone could be a Latin long E, an old English ash (æ) with a nasal A sound as in apple, a long A, eye (as Spanish makes it, more or less), or anything else. He's not sure himself which he prefers.

You will, then, be sad to hear that I have trained myself to respond in such a way habitually.

Well, except for the part about Switzerland.

That part didn't require any training to become a habit.

Alec: All your comrade is trying to tell you is that he is skillful at existing. What's more, he is obviously correct, since had he failed to exist your whole Switzerland routine would be possible only in your imagination, where I'm sure it would continue.

The way I say Alorael, it rhymes with yeah-bore-say-pal; in other words, ah-lo-ray-AL. It does indeed sound like the name of an angel, which is why I'll never change that pronunciation.

And frankly, I don't see how anyone could mispronounce Khoth.

Well, I suppose if you were sufficiently perverse you could pronounce "Khoth" to rhyme with "both".

I pronounce it like 'Grah-Hoth', that is, like 'hot' only with a th at the end. Short o, like a bark or a cough.
