Yes, excellent... Mwahaha! More! IMAGE(http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/dvv/eplus2.gif)

I'll even provide something little myself. I admit, though, that I don't really sound like that. I know most of you can figure out how to, er, work it so it's more realistic. Of course, it's some years old, so even then it isn't a particularly good example of my voice.

Oddly enough, I know the origin of the title of this thread, and I clicked on it fully expecting to find an update on that event.

Cav, funny you should mention that -- I don't know if you heard about the guy who claimed a few months ago that he'd shot the dingo that killed Azaria, but was too scared to go to police at the time because he'd been shooting dingoes in a national park. His story turned out to be full of holes, though, and I think he ended up being charged with filing a false police report.

(I know we're straying off topic, but the only way for me to stay on topic would be to crassly brag about being the forum celebrity again and turn this topic into an instrument for personal gain, and I don't think there are any young ladies from the Melbourne or Geelong area on these forums for me to impress anyway.)

For some reason, a man named Vladimir comes to mind. In that case, it'd probably be a joke, anyway.

Here's a recording of my voice. I'm from Chicago, so my accent is more or less the standard American one. Thanks much to ADoS for hosting this.

Most people assume it's pronounced that way when they view it in print. I suppose it is the most sensible pronunciation, but I've pronounced the name this way ever since I conceived of it nearly ten years ago.

I pronounced the U in Stughalf as a short oo, as in "book". Then again, I pronounce things strangely.

Funny, I pronounced it like "stuck" (only with a g) all the time. :)

I wonder how anyone would pronounce Arancaytar...

I always pronounced "Stughalf" mostly correctly. Sometimes I pronounce the "l" though.
Aran, why don't you upload your voice and we can see how it's really pronounced?

I would pronounce Arancaytar as "air"-"an"-"keh"-"tar". Probably incorrect, but your name does seem awfully phonetic.

"Andrew Miller", on the other hand, is pretty simple. :)

The german version has long 'a' as in 'regard'. The '-cay' syllable is pronounced as the 'ie' in 'tie'.

That would be correct in this case, yes. Even though it's not actually German in its phonetics, the pronounciation of Tolkien's languages is slightly related to German.

And it's stressed on the third syllable rather than the second, which is something my father always gets wrong when he addresses me that way for fun. :D

For some reason, I pronounce the short form like AM(?) said: "AIR-ran".

Probably because you're an aussie. :D (Yes, it's AM, just decided to crack and change up the moniker. Points for anyone other than Kel who can tell where it's from, and no Googling...)

I can distinguish the Queensland dialect from other Australian dialects, but that's where my Australian dialect perception ends. Out of curiosity, does Australia have an equivalent to the American South, dialect-wise? Can y'all easily discern the difference in American dialects?

Ja, der Wagenhumpen. :P

Edit - AM: I think it's Latin for "I sing (of) War and Men". But I don't know where it comes from...

Edit2: Following Quenya phonetics, the c is a k, but it's right otherwise.

Yes.

I've always pronounced Arancaytar ah-ron-SAY-tar. Close enough to the way he does it, I suppose.

EDIT: Was your second edit in reference to my pronunciation?

EDIT2: Whenever I use the nickname "Stugie," the pronunciation is markedly different from the original. STOO-jee

I can't really tell the difference between Queensland and the rest of the country. They do speak differently, but I think it has more to do with sentence structure than accent. E.g. they will quite happily end a sentence with 'but'. However, the differences are very slight, and between the other states they are pretty much non-existant.

Regarding American accents, I gather the North accent is like Stugie or ADoS. Understandable, and almost bearable. The South accent is the one that's close to impenetrable.

For some reason, I really don't like American accents.

You sound like a mix between British and Chinese.

Which, I guess, makes a sort of sense, geographically speaking.

Can someone explain Aran's ethnic background, please? I thought he was straight-up German, and I hear British-ness in the English, which makes sense in that he is a European, but why would it make sense to Alec to hear Chinese in the accent?
