I don't recall it ever being established that it literally rose from the seas. We just decided that it hadn't been discovered at the time in which the Avernum series took place.

On a related note, I really miss the Look command. It'd be nice to have a way of knowing if the monster I'm fighting is the sort that sprays acid when hit before I attack it.

Haven't heard of that one; I'll try to track it down. Two of the games I was thinking of were the Fawn series, available here . I mean, they're HyperCard games so they don't exactly run lightning-fast, but apart from that they're pretty neat.

Also, sometimes it's in Silvar instead. So if you can't find it in Formello, check Silvar.

Why do you want it to attack you, anyway? Pea Eye's quest?

Yes. Skill points you spend during character creation are treated the same way as ones you spend later on, so it'll still prevent you from purchasing training.

Report Your Stats Here (Uncle Spam Needs YOU!) in Avernum 4

Location: most of the way through the Eastern Gallery (visited every town and done most of the major quests)
4 PCs, levels 15-16
XP Penalties: 23-27%
Average XP earned per kill: 2-3 off chitrachs

The major variable determining my PCs' experience seems to be how often they die -- my fighter and mage, who are almost always alive at the end of a battle, have a little over half a level's worth of XP advantage over my priests, who are a little more fragile.

I'm pretty sure that Curing can cure acid at level 2, and it may even be able to do so at level 1. It just does so rather poorly.

Personally, I can't honestly say I was ever a big fan of beam and conveyor belt puzzles in the first place, so I'm not sorry to see them go.

To be fair, I can think of at least three HyperCard games which didn't suck.

I think 3rd is the lowest I've ever been in the rankings. I'm not sure whether to be impressed or depressed by this fact.

They're vampires. Presumably they're killing someone at regular intervals, even if in RoR-BoA we don't see them doing so on camera. :P

By the way, I really hope you went through Nephil's Gambit or something to get that Poison Use skill rather than actually spending skill points on it.

The answer to this question depends on whether you're playing Geneforge 1, 2 or 3. Trainers work differently in each.

Technically, Harold was already dead. It's kind of a prerequisite for being a zombie.

You're in for a disappointment -- A4 doesn't have a calendar.

I'm not convinced that the endgame will be hardest. For one thing, by keeping the early to midgame easy for myself, I'm likely to end up accumulating a massive supply of usable items (energy potions, invulnerability potions, etc) which I can lean on later if all else fails.

Moreover, I've been doing *some* planning for later on stat-wise; I've already got 12 Arcane Lore and 16 Nature Lore spread out among my party, so I'm not going to need to throw too many more skill points into those for a while. I also try to keep at least 10 unspent skill points in reserve on every character at all times, so that if I urgently need to boost a particular skill I can do so.

I'm a short way into the Eastern Gallery now and so far this strategy is working well for me. So far the only things that have given me real trouble were Hrickis (who I managed to bump off after a few reloads) and the testing shade north of Formello (and there's a trick to surviving that fight).

By the same argument, reloading a saved game when you die lets you off too easily. And if you believe that, go and play Angband until you can't stand it any more. :P

Seriously, though, the tradeoff for death being softened is that you can't be taken down to 0 HP and not die any more. Which is quite annoying when enemies cast Icy Rain for more damage than my characters' maximum HP...

By the way, just as another little tip, don't underestimate the value of First Aid. It's very cheap to put 2 points on each character, and that's enough to get an automatic heal of about 20 HP and 5 energy after a medium to large-sized fight. It's certainly a better defensive investment than Endurance, which is almost useless at low levels (although it improves later on).

What's wrong with throwing weapons? One of my priests has Bows skill and the other has Throwing skill, because I wanted to make them different in some way. It's working out pretty well for me so far; right now, with equivalent amounts of skill, my thrower does about 50% more damage with a plain javelin than my archer does with a yew bow (45ish compared to 30ish). The only drawback is that javelins are really heavy.

Incidentally, I *highly* recommend giving all priests 3 levels of Mage Spells, so they can cast Haste (and Bolt of Fire, which comes in handy more often than you'd think). This means limiting them to a 5% armor penalty so they can actually cast mage spells, but that's not as bad as it sounds, since there are plenty of good items with no penalty. (Shields, for example. I don't know what Jeff was thinking when he decided to give shields no penalty, but I'm not complaining.)

The only long-term penalty to dying is that dead characters don't gain experience until you revive them.

When does he decide you're strong enough, anyway? My party's at level 7-8 and he still tells me to go away.

EDIT: Apparently the requirement is an average party level of 8, as that's when he finally relented.

Also, "ameliorate" carries the connotation of improving something bad to make it less bad, rather than improving something good to make it better.
