I think that it creates a greater tie to the world where the scenario takes place, and the author can have greater control over the story that way. Oh, and this doesn't seem to be about linearity at all. A linear scenario can be much more complete and fun to play than a more open-ended scenario. The author has much more control over a linear scenario, and they can more easily keep the scenario moving quickly. Still, if it's not done right, the scenario will seem too short and sparse. All of the farming done now could be done by a few people with better results and food could be sold cheaply all across the world. This is protectionism gone way too far.
