All of TM's scenarios are pretentious. SkeleTony - I don't care if the combat system allows you to chop off a guy's pinkie finger. That stuff isn't important to me. I only like combat that helps to advance the storyline - to me, everything else is waste of time and effort and is just boring. We just have fundamental differences in the way we view things. -------------------- "At times discretion should be thrown aside, and with the foolish we should play the fool." - Menander ==== Drakefyre's Demesne - Happy Happy Joy Joy Encyclopedia Ermariana - Trapped in the Closet ==== You can take my Mac when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse! Lockpicking and Disarm Traps are basically useless - I can bash down most doors and take the punishment of most traps, and for the ones I can't I can cast Unlock. I'd suggest saving different copies of your parties at different levels so that you'll be able to play any level of scenario at any time. Also, you should try out scenarios with pre-made parties to see if that's your thing. The best ones are Emulations, Quintessence, and Chains, and they're all extremely good. If you're looking for a challenge, go for a singleton - a 1PC party. This pirate game you're talking about doesn't seem very interesting to me - it's a world to explore. So what? Doing quests just to get stronger to do more quests just seems like an idiotic progression. What village is so troubled that it is beset upon by goblins, kobolds, and ogres? -------------------- "At times discretion should be thrown aside, and with the foolish we should play the fool." - Menander ==== Drakefyre's Demesne - Happy Happy Joy Joy Encyclopedia Ermariana - Trapped in the Closet ==== You can take my Mac when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse! Something good to use are the Wall of Force and Forcefield spells too. Your nephil thief/archer is basically useless - you'd be better off with another fighter, IMO. EDIT: Kill the mage first. I agree with the Creator (Ash Lael). There are some scenarios where you still have choices and the scenario progresses in a linear manner - Of Good And Evil is a good example, and so is Quintessence (sort of). Re: the whole movie thing. In a book/movie, I see the characters solve the puzzles and fight the baddies. In a scenario I can do it. DreamGuy, a lot of your ire seems directed at cut scenes where your characters say things that you wouldn't have them say. I can understand that, but expanding that to linear scenarios is a huge generalization. Also, please note that I have not played any BoA scenarios beyond the first four and RoR. SkeleTony, I don't know of any scenario that I would call linear that fits your description of a linear scenario besides movie scenarios. I would call linear scenarios ones like Revenge, Emulations, An Apology, etc. There are many things that the player does, but there is a set plot and order and you cannot deviate from it. You still have to solve problems and fight baddies. Part of why I like them so much is that they move by quickly - each of my actions leads directly towards the next part of the scenario. It makes me feel involved, like things are happening to me. As opposed to a more open-ended scenario, with no real sense of urgency, and I often think 'so what?'. There definitely were thousands of soldiers in Avernum - the party kills hundreds of them by themselves. Some of TM's scenarios constitute a series (Echoes and Bandits). I'm not a big fan of them or the Adventurer's Clubs myself. The best series is the Arc, which is all of Alcritas' scenarios. Tatterdemalion means 'The Raggedy Man' in the scenario and in English, which you will soon learn if you play it. A list of ranked scenarios: http://p080.ezboard.com/fthelyceumfrm27.showMessage?topicID=310.topic Some suggestions: An Apology (low-med level party) Spears (lvl 1/low level party) Quintessence (provides a party) Nephil's Gambit (low level party) Tatterdemalion (lvl 1 party) Of Good And Evil (low level party, I think) Emulations (provides a party) Chains (provides a party) Requelle's Nightmare (med lvl party) On a Ship to Algiers (lvl 1 party) [ Tuesday, March 01, 2005 03:37: Message edited by: Drakefyre ] -------------------- "At times discretion should be thrown aside, and with the foolish we should play the fool." - Menander ==== Drakefyre's Demesne - Happy Happy Joy Joy Encyclopedia Ermariana - Trapped in the Closet ==== You can take my Mac when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse! I don't think that the monster plagues are clichéd either. But I just love Exile II, and Exile III is a close second. I never really got into Exile I, and I only played it through to the end once. Also, I'd like to get a message when I place a monster where I can give it a script and personality. Maybe just pull up the monster info page upon placing the monsters. As for the problems with heights, it's too hard to individually adjust each space that you want to change heights and then add the graphics, etc. Well, it seems like they all split up, resulting in their bodies and equipment being scattered around Valorim. Facing monsters by yourself when you were just expecting to scout can be a shock. And besides, their armor may have been trying to kill them. Does this really matter? It's all semantics. On the one side we have SkeleTony who thinks that RPGs should be about the player doing what they want and getting stronger (simplified, I know). On the other, we have people like me. You ask why I don't read a book or watch a movie. I'm not inside of a book. I'm not a character in a movie. I can be a part of the story in a scenario. I think it's fun. And that's why I play scenarios. I think we could definitely have scenarios that we both thought were great. A totally immersive world like in Exile II or Geneforge. I like both of them. But we don't have the tools to make them in Blades of Exile/Avernum. There are limitations. More often than not, scenarios tip towards one end of the spectrum, usually a lot. But we have to wee with the willy we've got. And we've got a rather small willy. I think that beating an Orc chieftan, getting the Ring of +3 Armor, and then heading off to the Ogre Dungeon to level up some more is just pointless, tedious, and boring. This does not interest or excite me. Why do I play scenarios? I want to be excited. I want to be placed in the middle of a story and I want to find out what happens. I want to be swept up and moved along. That's what I find fun. Also, there are some different kinds of puzzles: Tactical challenges - different and challenging combat More conventional puzzles - Get across the bridge without it breaking, etc. Riddles - these are awful and should just be thrown out -------------------- "At times discretion should be thrown aside, and with the foolish we should play the fool." - Menander ==== Drakefyre's Demesne - Happy Happy Joy Joy Encyclopedia Ermariana - Trapped in the Closet ==== You can take my Mac when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse!
