1-4 have their limits somewhere in the 50 range. I think BoA has it somewhere around 30000 (though through normal play, it's extremely difficult to get it past 100, and the HLPM god party only goes to 250).

You read correctly, Slarty. I was just very, very late with my vote.

I actually have a similar script. If you want the person to be on the space when it occurs, use the START_STATE. Of course, you have to reset the script so it runs every turn the party is near. Use my script as an example.

// thermalvent.txt
// by Nioca

// This terrain script will cause major fire damage to anyone who steps on it.

// Memory Cells -
// 0 - Severity. Defaults to 10.
// 1,2 - SDF to deactivate. If the value for both cells is 0, ignored. Otherwise, once this cell
// is set to anything other than 0, the vent deactivates.

beginterrainscript;

variables;

short severity = 10;
short turn; // This timer makes sure the effects only run once every turn.

body;

beginstate INIT_STATE;

if ((get_flag(get_memory_cell(1),get_memory_cell(2)) > 0) && (get_memory_cell(1) + get_memory_cell(2) > 0))
end();

if (get_memory_cell(0) > 0)
severity = get_memory_cell(0);

turn = get_current_tick(); // Set the timer.

set_script_mode(2); // Run every turn unless the party is far away.

break;

beginstate START_STATE;

if (turn == get_current_tick())
end();

if ((get_flag(get_memory_cell(1),get_memory_cell(2)) > 0) && (get_memory_cell(1) + get_memory_cell(2) > 0))
end();

if (char_on_me() != -1) {
put_effect_on_space(my_loc_x(),my_loc_y(),1,5,1);
run_animation_sound(167);
damage_char(char_on_me(),get_ran(severity,5,30),1); }
turn = get_current_tick();

break;

beginstate STEP_INTO_SPOT_STATE;

if ((get_flag(get_memory_cell(1),get_memory_cell(2)) > 0) && (get_memory_cell(1) + get_memory_cell(2) > 0))
end();

put_effect_on_space(my_loc_x(),my_loc_y(),1,5,1);
run_animation_sound(167);
damage_char(char_who_activated_script(),get_ran(severity,5,30),1);
turn = get_current_tick();

break;
Note the STEP_INTO_SPOT_STATE is still present. This catches the party if they're in combat mode every time they step on it. Otherwise, it'd only run once even if it was stepped on several times in combat.

I suppose it's too little too late, but here's my thoughts on who would win.

Ephesos vs. Lazarus: There's one factor that seems to be forgotten here: Cold. Lazarus is comfortable with it, and instantly drops the temperature of the arena below freezing. Not only does Ephesos start suffering intense exhaustion and frostbite, but all of his crickets turn into cricketcicles as well. Ephesos still manages to fire off a Retribution, but Lazarus gets back up. As shown in Dikiyoba's stories, he can only use it once. But that's all he needs. Lazarus invokes the power of a pre-made party, promptly sapping all of Ephesos's magical ability. Ephesos is left with no form of combat ability and is left helpless as the roars of the deadly beast of the rim come closer.

WINNER: IMAGE(http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p188/Nioca/bluebeast.gif) (and by extension, Lazarus)

Infernal vs. Alec: Alec seems to have become quite tame lately. And the Demonslayer is a magnificent weapon (in A4).

WINNER: INFERNAL

Nicothodes vs. Dikiyoba: Dikiyoba overwhelms Nicothodes with her dazzling array of unusual-yet-deadly weapons. Nicothodes falls in short order to a bizarrely-named array of Fyora relatives.

WINNER: DIKIYOBA

Thralni vs. Thuryl: Thuryl's main weapon has no affect, whilst Thralni summons several Senarti and a massive scenario to protect him. He then starts tossing explosive potions down at him from a safe distance. Unfortunately, Thralni starts becoming confused and offended by the Deathmatch and Thuryl's antics. Thralni falls back to the ground, where Thuryl's moons and Kool-Aid deliver lethal damage. But, in Thralni's last breaths, he reveals the true name of the Senarti.

WINNER: THRALNI

Delicious Vlish vs. Synergy: Synergy fires a massive bolt of ice, obliterating Vlish before he can even react.

WINNER: SYNERGY

MagmaDragoon vs. Tyranicus: Magma starts off immediately overpowering Tyranicus. Unfortunately for Magma, Tyranicus has a secret weapon on his side. It is not Tyranicus, but Andraste that delivers the fatal blow.

WINNER: TYRANICUS

Riibu vs. Archmage Alex: Riibu would be able sneak up on and Chaos Attack Alex before he managed to summon a sufficient number of stick figures to protect him. Unfortunately for Riibu, Alex is the incarnation of Chaos, and thus unaffected.

WINNER: ARCHMAGE ALEX

Saunders vs. Schrodinger: Saunders may be cuddly, but there's a bit of evil in her. Schrodinger never sees it coming.

WINNER: SAUNDERS

A Burning Question (Nightfall) in Blades of Exile

I'm at the Citadel of the Burning Darkness, top floor. I made my way across the water puzzle and stole the knife off the altar. I then went back into the secret passage and located the scrolls I was supposed to find. However, when I came back, I found I couldn't get back across the water puzzle. I tried every combination of moves I could think of, but I can't get back across. The only thing that happens is that an evil acolyte will occasionally show up and get flattened by a fireball.

Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks in advance.

Easy there; that's Slarty's job, if I remember right.

I've tried writing a book several times, always fiction, but it never really goes anywhere. I always find it to cliche or to similar to something I've already read, and thus abandon it.

As for ones that make me go wow, the most recent on was The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. I really thought I was there till the end, and it's rather amazing that the author never saw it himself.

Muff-muff, you aren't the only one who suffers from poor short-term memory here. And erratic behavior does not a body change require.

Then it would cause a massive multi-dimensional collapse from accidentally existing in the Avernum universe when it belongs in the Geneforge universe.

And during a battle? Unless you're suggesting a scene like this:
quote:
A fierce battle wages in a remote cave in Avernum between a dozen goblins and four anonymous adventurers. Suddenly, the adventurers' torch goes out, plunging the scene into almost total darkness.

Adventurer #2: "Hold up everybody! I need to light a new torch! We can't fight properly in darkness!"

All of the adventurers and goblins fall still and watch Adventurer #2 attempt to light a torch (rather unsuccessfully) with flint and some lichen. Sparks fly, but to no avail.

Adventurer #2: *striking flint angrily* "Come... on. Light, you worthless..."

Adventurer #1: "Let me try."

Adventurer #1 also tries, but has similar luck. He then turns to Adventurer #4.

Adventurer #1: "Can't you cast a light spell, or a Bolt of Fire?"

Adventurer #4: "I ran out of spell points hacking through the last three tedious fights."

Adventurer #3: "And don't bother asking me, 'cause my deity hasn't blessed me with heavenly fire yet."

Adventurer #1 continues striking the flint, cursing under his breath. Finally, after three hours of trying, he lights the torch.

Adventurer #1: "Yes! I did it! Guys, look, I-"

Adventurer #1 looks around and notices that his comrades fell asleep out of sheer boredom. The goblins did not. Seeing their chance, they charge.

Adventurer #1: "Crap."

The brave and noble adventurers were never seen nor heard from again.

The End
Seriously, though, the player's party is never shown carrying flint, and in the case of the lamp, it'd be very difficult to light in such a manner.

There's something that's been bugging me recently, and while it's rather trivial and silly, I still have to know. How do people start fire in the Avernum world?

More specifically, how do adventurers, in the middle of a cave with no ignition source in sight, spontaneously light a torch/lamp/candle? I doubt the Avernum universe has matches or butane lighters, and parties without magic-users can light them just the same as those with magic-users. So how do the light them?

Forty scenarios, not thirty. Not a big difference, but it's still a difference. That said, thank you, Ginger, for that advertising of BoA. More designers means more scenarios. More scenarios means more fun.

As far as I'm aware, you have to throw in the maximum amount of coins of choices available several times. High amounts of the skill Luck will reduce the amount of cash you need to throw in overall (and it's a doozy, by the way, somewhere in th 1xxx range. It's worth it if you have a full party, though. It's cheaper than training each individual). But if you throw in any less than 50 at a time, you're wasting your money.

I encountered the same thing too, and couldn't find a cause. It seems unstable, though. On my first attempt, the town was hostile on my first visit. On the second attempt, it was hostile after I stole what I was supposed too. Same happened with the third and fourth attempt.

No, I would call Foul Hordes garbage.

The only thing that can describe Foul Hordes in it's true and absolute horror is an incredibly long string of profanity. I suggest you don't play it, though I recognize that by telling you such, you'll go off and play it just to see how bad it is.

Frostbite, A Small Rebellion, Shades of Gray, A Good Beginning, and Emerald Mountain are all fairly linear, but are open-ended. Diplomacy with the Dead branches out a bit and is open-ended as well. Backwater Calls, Magus of Cattalon, and Xerch'de are not open-ended, but you can follow multiple paths to the same goal. Mad Ambition is similar, but the path you take is pre-decided at the beginning of the scenario. Rats Aplenty and Where the Rivers Meet have plenty of side quests, as do Backwater Calls and Magus of Cattalon.
