There's something that's been bugging me recently, and while it's rather trivial and silly, I still have to know. How do people start fire in the Avernum world?

More specifically, how do adventurers, in the middle of a cave with no ignition source in sight, spontaneously light a torch/lamp/candle? I doubt the Avernum universe has matches or butane lighters, and parties without magic-users can light them just the same as those with magic-users. So how do the light them?

They didn't start the fire; it was always burning since the world's been turning.

But seriously, what's wrong with flint and tinder? There's certainly no shortage of the former.

And during a battle? Unless you're suggesting a scene like this:
quote:
A fierce battle wages in a remote cave in Avernum between a dozen goblins and four anonymous adventurers. Suddenly, the adventurers' torch goes out, plunging the scene into almost total darkness.

Adventurer #2: "Hold up everybody! I need to light a new torch! We can't fight properly in darkness!"

All of the adventurers and goblins fall still and watch Adventurer #2 attempt to light a torch (rather unsuccessfully) with flint and some lichen. Sparks fly, but to no avail.

Adventurer #2: *striking flint angrily* "Come... on. Light, you worthless..."

Adventurer #1: "Let me try."

Adventurer #1 also tries, but has similar luck. He then turns to Adventurer #4.

Adventurer #1: "Can't you cast a light spell, or a Bolt of Fire?"

Adventurer #4: "I ran out of spell points hacking through the last three tedious fights."

Adventurer #3: "And don't bother asking me, 'cause my deity hasn't blessed me with heavenly fire yet."

Adventurer #1 continues striking the flint, cursing under his breath. Finally, after three hours of trying, he lights the torch.

Adventurer #1: "Yes! I did it! Guys, look, I-"

Adventurer #1 looks around and notices that his comrades fell asleep out of sheer boredom. The goblins did not. Seeing their chance, they charge.

Adventurer #1: "Crap."

The brave and noble adventurers were never seen nor heard from again.

The End
Seriously, though, the player's party is never shown carrying flint, and in the case of the lamp, it'd be very difficult to light in such a manner.

Matches aren't that radical an idea. The chemicals they require have been used for a really long time, and I think Ermarian can get away with a sulfur-coated stick (which Wikipedia dates to 3500 BC in Egypt) without becoming too modern.

I don't know if those ancient matches still needed a spark or were friction-ignited, but making a spark is also really simple. You could argue it takes more than one action point in combat, but that's unnecessary detail - in any case, it's far less than a minute.

(Face it: Teleportation, but no fire? WTH?)

Speaking of matches, try getting through a dungeon with them. At least this was the third one I had to look at before I died of laughter.

Hmm, lets see the vahnatai try lighting one!
quote:
The four adventurers finally meet the requirements before they go after Rentar-Ihrno.

Erika never showed up to help them, she was doing her makeup...but the adventurers managed to get all the vahnatai, and summoned creatures.

Rentar-Ihrno: Fools! I am invincible in this thingy that I have!

Adventurer 1: Uhh...what is happening to the lights?

Rentar-Ihrno: Uhh...I want you guys to see eachother when you scream in agony.

Rentar-Ihrno attempts to light a torch. She then summons a slime to assist her. The torch dissolves. She then tried a cockroach, which just pooped on it. Next, she tried a troglodyte. It lit the match, but it set itself on fire. The fire went out immediately. Next she tried a giant, which decided to eat it. A golem blew it up.

She then attempted to light it herself again. She failed. Then she gets an idea and asks Adventurer 4 to light it. He was successful. Rentar-Ihrno looked at herself and saw several spears and a fork stuck inside her.

Rentar-Ihrno: Didn't I say that I was invincible?

Adventurer 3: Umm, this game made it so that if we hit you enough times...that you will go down.

Adventurer 2: And it is just one more hit!

Rentar-Ihrno: Crap.
Yes, I know...someone already did one of these. But I just had to.

Why not just carry around some of those nifty glowing mushrooms?

The mushrooms would die.

What you would have to do is make a little creature the glows (enough to light your way plus a little more), that way you can just feed it. And it wouldn't even need that much food/water.

Then it would cause a massive multi-dimensional collapse from accidentally existing in the Avernum universe when it belongs in the Geneforge universe.

You know how those mushrooms were created? Wizards developed them. They could do the same to make those glowing lizard like things.

Vahnatai, no less, which we have since conjectured to be Avernum's version of Shapers anyway...

Jeff has said the Vahnatai aren't the Shapers. Jeff creates the games. Thus, the Vahnatai aren't the Shapers.

The Borg would most likely win by simply assimilating everyone on the spot.

Edit: I love tangents!
