I agree with ironfirstchamp: it would be nice to have more Linux/Unix ports. I mostly use Unix (Solaris) but we are going over to OES (SuSE) for our servers. I also have Windows because about 95% of our users have it, so I must know what they are talking about when someone phones me to say that his "internet" is not working. (He usually means that he has lost his Samba connection to my server so that he cannot edit his pages.)

I would actually go further than ironfirstchamp and say that it would be nice if we could have more good Windows ports! Avernum 1 has an annoying bug in the navigation and Avernum 4 has two:

It only works for the administartorIt uses its own keybord decoder and ignores the keybord coding. (e.g. my German kezbord is wrong [z=y]).See:

IPB vs. phpBB in General

I have been running a number of web-servers for about 10 years. At present we have about 1.5M hits p. day and there are quite a few forums running on our servers. My obsevations:

phpBB: I do not think that it is running on any of our servers, but I have noticed that on other sites running this forum, the performance drops dramatically when a lot of users are logged on. I can only assume that it uses a lot of rescources.

UltimateBB: This is what is used here. I have one instance of this which takes about 50% of the resources on the box on which it is running. However: This is a big forum with a few thousand active users; the webmaster is using an old (rather pimitive) CGI-version in Perl with a selfmade file based database and there is apparently a newer PHP version which uses MySQL.

punBB: This is the one I always recommend: it is small, simple, fast, easy to administer and does everything I expect from a forum.

The Hints Book says you need four brooches but it is better if you have found them all. I do not think you can get to the teleporter with less.

Thanks for the tip. I have always come in from the north, but I will try this way when I get around to it in my walkthrough which is as yet only up to the Coffin Caves on the Dark waters.

Zevi is wrong. I assume you mean the lever in the NW corner of the room in the NE of level 3. (I too often get mixed up with east and west.) This lever opens the locked door in the SW corner so that you can get up to the 4th level without having to sneak in from the north where you trigger a fight with 7 or 8 mutant giants.

If you already have Unlock Doors L3 you can open this door anyway.

Avernums how many people do you prefer to use in each of the Avernum games? in The Avernum Trilogy

I have tried a singleton in A3 but it was a bit difficult and I gave it up and picked up the NPCs.

Otherewise I use 4 Characters: melee-warrior, pole-warrior/priest with mage 3 (can hasten) and two priest/mages. Having 3 priests is very useful against undead.

Is there some specific thing you can't kill? {like A3?}
Although I hardly ever attack friendly people I know you can kill the dragons - at least Pyrog (who is nasty anyway), Motrax, Sulfras and Athron. I have never got into a fight with Khoth but I assume he can be killed.

In this game you can attack Erika. It does not affect her at all. She cannot be killed and she does not even get angry if you steal her property from under her nose!

 Anyway it is not very good manners to go round fighting friendly people!

If you mean: is there anyone like Rentar-Ihrno, who cannot be killed in A3? The answer is No. You can (and should) kill all bad guys.

Athron does not seem to welcome visitors. The direct way in is blocked but there are passages to the east and to the west. In the west are lots of twisty passages with drakes round every corner.

To the east it is much the same story – lots of twisty passages and drakes. In the NE corner of this complex is a hidden door leading up to the next level and more drakes.

In the Keep of Tinraya. There is a room in the SW which needs Move Mountains to get into. Naturally there are lots of alien beasts in there.

I agree that the Beastslayer (like the Demonslayer in this game) is pretty useless. I also seldom use slow.

I never thought of getting more than one Mithril Blade. That's a jolly good idea! Next time I play A3 I'll pick up three Mithril Blades and give two to my spell casters. They don't need weapons but the extra APs are good. What with these, Boots of Speed all round, the Fury Bow and Pachtar's Mail I shall hardly need Haste!

One trouble with this game is that there are lots of good weapons: the Justice Lance is for example good for a priest even if he never uses it.

Sorry I forgot that the metal Sulfras needs for the Beastslayer is also mithril. You are quite right, there are three lots of mithril: Eagle Rock, Athron and the rock near the Inn of Blades.

There are also the uses for the mithril: for Carmine (Mithril Blade), for Sulfras (Beastslayer) and for Arion (Slow L3). Of these the Mithril Blade is i.m.h.o. the most useful.

I also cannot remember loosing reputation for delivering the package to Kendra. You do however loose reputation if you
get caught with scribane by any guards around Lorelei; so you should approach it from the north or (if you have the Orb of Thralni) from the giant lands to the SE or (the easiest way) use the teleporter in Ernest's hut.steal Paula's package in Delisgive Ivanova the book you stole from Ernest - stealing it only gets you sent to the Drake Cavejoin the Church of Divine LucreThe only disadvantage of the fake Anama rings is that you cannot read the spell tomes in the restricted area of the Anama Temple. I usually buy the fake rings and when I have done everything which need them, get rid of them by praying at the altar in Shayder.

10 panals at Keep of Rentar Ihrno in The Avernum Trilogy

You have to press each of ten buttons on the lower level once only. The order is not quite immaterial: there is one corner (I foget which) where you can cut off a panel with a laser if you press them in the wrong oder. In that case you must deactivate the laser by pressing the button again, go off to the other panel press the button once and then go back to the first panel and press the button again (ie a total of three times).

I got caught on that one too. I remembered finding lots of Areneae, for instance in Vila, only to find that they were ELDER Areneae - no good for this quest!

All you can do is take Thuryl's advice and hope that some nasty monster summons an Arenea.

Delrin-Bok is really a bit of a pain. If you are up to that you could certainly clear out most of the Eastern Gallery and the dungeons around the Tower of Magi like the Serpent Cult.

If you have a red pass you could also go off to Harston and if you can get hold of a blue one (for instance in the Secret Empire Fort south of Cotra), vist Aimee on the Northern Waters and learn Dispel Barriers.

There are two lots of special metal lumps in this game:
East of the Inn of Blades (this is the metal Arion wants)East and north of the Eagle Rock (First you must talk to Zamora in Gidrik. He tells you about "unusual metal" and a map in Aminro. When you have read the map you can find the lumps near Eagle Rock.)I give the first lumps to Arion, who lets you learn Slow L3.
The lumps near Eagle Rock I give to Carmine in Lennus. The Mithril Blade he makes is probably the best melee weapon in the game.

Bunker problem in The Avernum Trilogy

I also had the same problem:
quote:
But when I go to the Bunker and talk to Ostoth, to get him to make the weapon, it only gives me conversation options about Erika or the Dragons.
I think that it was caused by going to the Bunker too early. If I remember rightly, I first talked to Ostoth before completing the Golem-Quest. After that there was no way of getting him to offer making a weapon against the Vahnatai.

Since then I always aviod the Bunker until after completing the Golem-Quest.

The inhabitants of Delis will not forgive you. You have also lost 1 Reputation. That is why I never complete this quest (or for that matter the quest for Ivanova in Golddale, although I do steal the book from Ernest because that is the only way of learning Dispel Barrier L3).

Appart from annoying the town and loosing reputation, stealing the package has no side effects. Delis is not important for the rest of he game.

I have been playing Spiderweb games for years. I started with Exile and went on to Avernum which I really enjoy.

Once when my grandson was visiting me he found the adult conversation rather boring. So I showed him Avernum 3. He liked it so much that I bought the whole trilogy for him for Christmas. I wanted to tell him where I had found lots of hints about the games on the Web but I discovered that the wonderful Avernum Annotated Maps had disappeared. So I decided to try and produce a few hints and tips myself for people who still play these fabulous games.

After three months work I had nearly finished the hints for Avernum 1, only to find that the "Annotated Maps" had been resurrected. I have nevertheless decided to make these tips available to the Avernum Fan Community:

My Avernum Hints

In the meatime A1 is more or less complete (please tell me of any mistakes or omissions) and I have started on A2, but I do not have a lot of time for this work.
