I think making Harry an oversung hero is the point of the books (and it's ironic how well they succeeded at that). And personally, I find Voldemort more disappointing than Harry. For all that we learn about his past, he's basically just an overpowered, short-sighted caricature of evil. Where is his supposed cunning and charm? How did he manage to take over practically everywhere so quickly? I dunno, maybe Harry wouldn't have had to rely on dumb luck and other people's sacrifices so much if Voldemort wasn't the ultimate evil wizard.

Dikiyoba will admit to liking less-than-ideal heros more than ideal ones, though. It would be more inspiring to watch a person mortally afraid of heights climb a ladder than Spider-Man climb to the top of a skyscraper, because the ladder-climber is challenging themselves while Spider-Man isn't risking anything at all.

You can, of course, just save over your old saved games. It's a bit easier that way.

Relax. The games themselves will still be 2-D. The only difference is that they will now come with a pair of 3-D glasses.

There are a very few cases (and it's usually fairly obvious) where talking to the right person, doing something, or getting close enough will open up a secret passage, but for the most part, there is nothing in those black areas. Clusters of trees are like walls and cliffs in that sense.

Well, whatever engine and graphics Jeff uses, someone will be off-put by them. Hopefully, A5's engine is much more streamlined than A4, what with the return of elevation and the engine advances of G4. If not, well, there's always Blades of Avernum, the updated Nethergate, and replaying the original trilogy.

I can't get your editor to work either, Sarasaphilia. I downloaded it using "Save As" instead of copying, so it's not that. The itemchars one scrambles up all the graphics, and the other one just breaks all the dialogue completely.

Dikiyoba is on Windows, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Dikiyoba didn't like the epilogue and wishes that it was left to the imagination instead. Other than that, it was okay.

Edit: Typo.

Open up the file gf4itemschars and do a search for the item you want to add to your inventory. For example, living tools. Then find the item number (begindefineitem #). A living tool is number 255.

Next, find a person or sign that you always have easy access to and open up the dialogue script (the one that ends in dlg) for the area that the person or sign is in. Let's say Delna in Southforge Citadel, so the file is z1sfcitdlg. Make a back up copy in case something goes wrong or you want the original file back. Then, search for a question that isn't tied to a quest or shop and isn't the beginning of a set of questions (mostly for convenience). "How old are you?" works nicely. At the end of the answer (and right before the next begintalknode), add
code =
reward_give(item #);
break;
exactly how it is written. If you want more than one item, add them all in individual reward_gives.

So, if you wanted Delna to give you three living tools every time you asked him how old he was, the script would look like this.

begintalknode 135;
state = 133;
nextstate = 134;
condition = 1;
question = "How old are you?";
text1 = "_Oh, old. Old. <...> Never let them raise me dumb._";
code =
reward_give(255);
reward_give(255);
reward_give(255);
break;
Dikiyoba hopes that is enough guidance.

Whoops. I didn't mean you. I was refering to "your" forum. Mods and admins should lock any threads started by or ruined by Ed (or any other troll) and IP ban the offender without any more disruption than is absolutely necessary.

The fact that Ed has evolved from just another annoying troll to the puppy-kicking epitome of ULTIMATE BADNESS (of doom!) in [some] people's minds is a bit disturbing. Can we please move on (or in Iffy's case lock, ban, and move on) instead of getting sucked back in? Don't feed the troll and all that.

If you had clicked on the link Randomizer provided, you would have seen that G5 will come after A5, and that will be the end of the Geneforge series. Jeff is currently working on A5.

As for textspeak-type writing, posts that are hard to read mean that people won't understand what you wrote or will simply ignore them, making it difficult for you to get answers to your questions. Thanks for cutting out those graemlins, by the way.

Dikiyoba is quite relieved that the series is finally ending. Dikiyoba lost Dikiyoba's enthusiasm for it after the fifth book came out. But hopefully, since it's the final book, it will be better than five and six were.

Skill Canisters! in Geneforge Series

12 leadership sounds too high for G1. I think I only ever had 10 or 11. I usually get my mechanics to 14 or 15 and ignore the unlock spell altogether, but since I think the highest trap is 14 mechanics and the tinker's gloves provide a +2 to mechanics, the highest mechanics needs to get is 12. I get those two skills up as soon as possible (Vakkiri has a lot of rewards for doing so) and then ignore them for the rest of the game. A few points of luck helps too, but not too many, especially since you can buy luck later on.

As a Shaper, put skill points into at least one of the shaping types for powerful creations, intelligence for essence, and blessing magic and healing for support. Add strength (for carrying capacity), endurance, spellcraft or dexterity/quick action as you need them.

I ran into this bug as well, but it was so long ago that I don't remember exactly what I did. What I think I did was find my saved game right before the fight (save a backup copy in case I'm wrong), set flag(44,7) to 1 in the character editor (choose advanced features, then set stuff done flag, then enter the three numbers individually), and travel back to the slith camp. Hopefully, things should continue as they are supposed to from there.

Dikiyoba thinks that's right. You'll know for certain when you try to cross the ruins into the Spirit City temple, though. If you can get across them, you did it correctly. If you can't, well, you messed up somewhere.

Social Degradation and Religious Decay (Split from "Life on Europa") in General

Pushing your religious beliefs (of any religion) on others does more harm to your religion than good. For example, there are only a few denominations that have people go door-to-door (and not every person who goes door-to-door is disrespectful and extremely invasive) but it's often all Christians who get scorn because of it.

Yes, there needs to be talk about faith and religious beliefs, but it needs to be less of a push and more of a helping hand.

There's only one upper-tier creation per base creation, so only 30 creations, plus the ornk.
