"Not even death can save you from me!" said the all mighty Diablo when he chose to let a 1,000,000+ people die by clicking on the biggest number in both letter polls so he can live off happily with his money and let the hero kill off the rest of the Prime Evils, so said the Dark Wanderer... Nah, seriously, I just chose 0 for both a & b. I wouldn't call it "blood money". Not too sure if this is true or not, but I've read in a law book one time that the states have to gain petition from the federal government before they receive any kind of aid. Obviously, New Orleans is not under the jurisdiction of the US government, but of the state of Louisana. Does the government assume that the states have enough resources to handle themselves or is this petition thing actually true (unless it's not)? -------------------- "Truly, if there is evil in this world, it lies in the heart of mankind." -Edward D. Heh, calculator games. I used to just play Pac-Man or some Space Invaders clone game called Phoenix while I had to sit through boring math and english class lectures. I bet a lot of people who get bored in classes probably do the same thing with their graphing calculators as well. I'm not the only one that does it, am I? -------------------- "Truly, if there is evil in this world, it lies in the heart of mankind." -Edward D. If the United States had a strong infrastructure in the first place, (if it was a top concern many years ago) maybe this current Gulf coast mess wouldn't be as bad as it is now. Though it seems impossible for the US to have top notch infrastructure, it's not. Lots of things in this country go undone and unaccounted for. I say, if you want something done right, just do it yourself, in terms of sanity and consequences that is. -------------------- "Truly, if there is evil in this world, it lies in the heart of mankind." -Edward D. Why didn't the government respond quicker to this whole mess? Is it because the people down there are of a lower social class? Is it because of race? Who knows. I just finished watching a NBC Dateline special report on Hurricane Katrina and there's this theory that the government would of responded quicker if the majority of those affected were Caucasian people instead of African Americans. I have no idea if this is true or not, but judging by how it took 3-4 days for those people to get any kind of major relief, that could be true. For example, if the President were to be under attack or were to survive a major disaster, surely the help would come immediately without any question or hesitation. The media believes that it was a matter of importance that the people had towards American society. More important people do tend to get pampered a lot more than poor people do. It's just a theory that the media has recently popped in these news specials. I just want to see other people's opinions on this matter. Edit: I also do understand that it does take time to get through such a disaster area if a lot of roads and bridges are destroyed and floods are as far as the eye can see. The views expressed in this post are not of my own, but from what I've seen presented in recent news reports. After reading the Wikipedia link on Katrina, it appears that anything that has to do with energy is going to be affected in the long run. Gasoline prices are the most obvious ones, but things like natural gas (already noticed my gas bill went up by $95 last month alone) are going to take up more money out of our finances as well. (for those that actually pay bills) This whole energy crisis thing the US is suffering through isn't anything new. Hurricane Katrina simply added fuel to the fire to expose our crisis further. As for alternative ways of automobiles, SUV sales have deceased a lot since gas prices are going up. These days, the average fill up for a SUV is about $55-$110 to fill up a whole tank! Better start looking for cars with low gallons and high milage per gallon. (26-40 is about reasonable) I've heard that hybrid cars are expensive, but with these events unfolding as we speak, they could be the new wave of cars in the upcoming future. Hmm...interesting older prototype model. I'm guessing that the original idea for the ferret bomb was for it to be mobile and not launched at a stationary position; that's just judging by the car curve like design and possible axels for wheels of the sort. Since the new model is top secret, well, tell us when you do finish it up. -------------------- "Truly, if there is evil in this world, it lies in the heart of mankind." -Edward D. $2.58 in July? That sounds about right. I've heard rumors of gas price highs at $3.39, but the highest I've seen in my area was about 10 cents lower than that... :P The first time I've ever filled up gas in a car, it was like 89 cents a gallon. (and that wasn't too long ago) My parents would tell me stories that they grew up filling up gas at a quarter a gallon and that you earned like $5 a day. My how times have changed. Of course, if you add the inflation in those past times, it's probably equal or higher to prices we see today. -------------------- "Truly, if there is evil in this world, it lies in the heart of mankind." -Edward D. $2.97 is the national average in the United States right now. That's bound to change in the next few days. I also would of thought the national price average of gas would be over $3, but many of the gas prices I've read, seen and heard of all appear to be between $2.95-$3.39. Prices vary between cities and states. Of course, like Lt. Sullust said, using oil reserves is only a temporary solution and if a permanent one is not found, (alternative fuel sources and the such) the US economy is just going to get worse. I would not be surprised if gas were to cost close to $4 near the major holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc...) or maybe even sooner... Edit: Believe it or not, the average price before Katrina was a lot less than $2.85 ($2.56 to be exact) as prices surged about 30 to 60 cents (probably price gouging) a gallon overnight and over the course of a few days too. The average price was actually $3.13 at one point, but has since dropped because of the reserved oil being used at the moment. Would that explain the surging increase of gasoline prices at the pump, or is the government using Katrina as an excuse for people "price gouging" gas? I've heard different opinions on both sides of this argument. Well, I think some of those oil rigs should be up and running soon. (those that suffered minor damage) I've heard that President Bush gave the order to use emergency oil reserves in order to accomadate price drops for gas which could be the reason that pump prices have dropped about 20-30 cents a gallon these past few days. The national average is like $2.85 or something now. -------------------- "Truly, if there is evil in this world, it lies in the heart of mankind." -Edward D. Avernum 2 was my first and most favorite of the all the SW games. When I first tried out the demo, it seemed so simple and crude, yet I was always itching to go further into the game and see what would happen next. It was when that Shareware Demon popped up, I knew that I had to register this game. I thought A1 was okay and A3 was pretty big, with the surface world and all. BoA is a good investment to try out too. If it had more scenairos, it'd probably be a top favorite for a lot of SW gamers. As for the Geneforge series, I liked the different paths that you could take from the 1st one, joining the different sects and all. The 2nd one, for some reason, was my personal favorite as I've beaten the whole game twice. I never really got into GF3 as it started to get dull playing a recycled storyline. I nearly fell asleep in trying to beat it. I don't know if anyone else had a similar feeling. Edit: I've only played the demo for Nethergate, so I can't give a complete answer for it, but it seemed like a really nice game to play. It actually seems better than the first Avernum. Maybe other people might think differently otherwise. I think people should know Baton Rogue as it's one of the towns that news channels around the country have been consistently mentioning about like every half hour. :) Speaking of "the bowl", the leeves were only meant to withstand a Category 3 hurricane and since New Orleans was below sea level, it was obvious that the city was going to go down with Katrina. People should of taken Katrina more seriously and I'm surprised that it took about 4 days before any significant help arrived. Of course, many of the citizens of New Orleans didn't have the proper transportation to get out of the city in the first place. This goes to show you that the United States really needs to work on a mass transit system. England has a big one, and so does France. Why not the United States? The title simply means describing on what kind of person you are. This topic might help out newbies who may not know the older members and is a good way for new people to introduce themselves. Ex: I am simply called Jeros, though my real name is Victor. I'm 17, recent high school graduate, and I'm currently attending USC in downtown California. I'm quite a shy person, and not exactly an "outgoing" type person. I also like to read books and play RPGs during my free time or on weekends.
